BURY ST EDMUNDS GOLF CLUB JUNIOR SECTION HANDBOOK 2017

CHARLES WILKENS JUNIOR CAPTAIN 2017 My name is Charles Wilkens and I am honoured to be the captain of the junior team here at Bury St Edmunds Golf club for 2017. I am 17 years old and currently studying for my A Levels at Mildenhall College and plan to go to university next year to study for a degree in maths and finance. I take over from Ben Aves who was a great ambassador for the juniors and I hope to carry out my duties with the same level of commitment and enthusiasm. I have been playing golf here for about 7 years and have thoroughly enjoyed it. We are fortunate to have an exceptional course and great facilities which are regularly being developed to ensure that we continue to have one of the bests club in the area. Along with our Vice Captain, Jack Lancaster, I am looking forward to another year with a great junior team which already has so much talent and am also very excited by the talents and potential within the Junior Development programme.

Handicaps Golf is a unique sport in that players can compete on a level playing field, whatever their ability, thanks to the golf handicap system. In most cases, you will need to join a recognised club or official handicapping scheme in order to get an official golf handicap so you can play in competitions. In the UK, the maximum handicap for men is 28 and the maximum for women is 36. Juniors, at the discretion of the club, may have a club handicap of 29 and over [boys), 37 and over [girls]. At Bury St Edmunds, juniors have the opportunity to obtain a handicap. Play 3 rounds, complete a scorecard, get it signed, and hand it to the junior organiser or club secretary and a handicap will be worked out. If the handicap is 29 and over (boys) 37 and over [girls] this will be adjusted as your golfing skills improve. Juniors with a handicap of 28 [36 girls] or less shall have their handicap adjusted in accordance with the CONGU@ handicapping system. For further information see the junior website - Handicaps The summer competitions, Junads, are ideal for those without a handicap, where you can experience playing in a 9 hole competition. This can give you an opportunity to gain a handicap. 6

Information Club Etiquette Please do observe the dress code in the clubhouse - no tracksuits, collared shirts. Follow the Junior Code of Conduct at all times.. Juniors aged under 16 years are not permitted in the Snooker Room. There are no other restricted areas in the clubhouse for juniors. Golf Course Carry a pitch mark repair tool and use it. Keep up with play - that is with those in front of you. Golfing attire on the course - collared shirts, trousers/tailored shorts, golf shoes, although to start with trainers are acceptable. [Beginners dress code is relaxed, but remember you are on the golf course.] Follow the Junior Code of Conduct at all times. Tee Times Please note: The following restrictions apply to Juniors playing on the 18-hole course :- Handicap Boys 29 and over, Girls 37 and over weekdays no restriction - weekend play must be after 12:00 noon with an adult Handicap Boys 13 28, Girls 18 36 - weekdays no restrictions - Saturday play permitted after12:00 noon, unless accompanied by an adult or at the discretion of the Professional Sunday play permitted after 10:00am Handicap Boys 12 or less, Girls 18 or less weekdays & weekends no restrictions There is open play on the 9 hole course, for all players. If you want someone to play golf with at weekends or in the holidays - we can help out - contact the Junior Captain or Pro Shop First Aid Facilities They can be found at the pro shop, and the entrance to the club house. First Aiders are available in the Secretary s Office. 8

JDP Club Night & Juniors During the Summer months, JDP members usually meet one evening a week, between 6:00pm 7:00pm. Members receive 1 hours coaching from one of our Professionals during this time. This starts in May and goes through to the early part of September. During the Summer School holidays, Juniors as well as JDP members, meet one evening a week, usually from 4:00pm 6:00pm. (Junads) The idea is to play 9 holes of fun/competitive golf with a senior junior/adult golfer, and thus provide an opportunity for JDP players to put into practice skills they have acquired through their coaching. Junads is open to all juniors and JDP members, and a shortened course (blue tees) for those without a handicap. Saturday Academy with Simon Byford 9-10am Group 1 (18 hole handicap players & JDP) 10 11am Group 2 (Beginners & Learners) Further details contact Simon in the Pro Shop Tel: 01284 755979 Email: Proshop@burygolf.co.uk 9
