NEW If you are registering for a membership only, you can register at the club house starting May 1st or online at www.newmarkettennis.ca SUMMER 2015 EDITION PRESIDENT S MESSAGE WELCOME EVERYONE TO OUR NCTC 2015 SUMMER SEASON Starting this season, our 4th annual Ice breaker tournament will be held on Saturday May 23 rd, 2015. Sign up individually and you will be placed on Team Shane or Team Brian. You will then play against different opponents with different partners throughout the day. This "mix and mingle" format is a great way to meet people and enjoy fun competition. A first for this year is our Trillium-funded free lessons for new beginners ages 4 to adult. This program was developed to introduce tennis to those who have never played at no cost to them. We hope this will encourage children and adults in our community to learn the best sport in the world and live a healthy active lifestyle. Registration for this program can be done on our website. Spaces are limited and first come first served. Also new this year is our ON-LINE registration. Starting March 1 st, you can go to our website to register and pay for your membership on-line. www.newmarkettennis.ca Once again we will be offering Junior summer camps, club lessons, tournaments, House League and Inter County leagues for all levels and ages. For House league and club lessons, you must attend registration on Saturday March 28 th at the Youth Centre, or register at the club after May 1 st. Inter County play, tryouts and details are listed in this newsletter on page five. Congratulations to Liam Draxl for an amazing 2014-15 season! Liam finished the year ranked #1 in Ontario, and #4 in Canada. He is now ranked #1 in Canada in the singles and doubles 2015 boys U14. He represented Canada in Austria in July 2014 reaching the semi-finals and gaining experience on red clay. In January 2015 he represented Canada in England and France and advanced to the round of 16 in Les Petite As, matching results acquired by Monfils and Wawrinka in boys U14 at the same tournament. Way to go Liam! All group lessons are one hour sessions for 8 weeks and start the week of May 4th. The second set of 8 week lessons will begin July 13th. Days and times of the various lessons are available during registration day and on the website. The head pro will help determine which lesson groups would be best for you at time of registration. You must register in person on registration day March 28th. Registration in lessons is first come, first served. Limited spaces available. Adult lessons are $60.00 per session and Junior lessons are $45.00 per session. MINI TENNIS LESSONS Tennis lessons for children aged 4 to 7 years old (membership is not required). These lessons are designed specifically for the little people new to tennis. They will be using lightweight junior racquets and mini nets. The emphasis is on learning with a smile, building self-esteem and developing co-ordination skills. A fun way to learn the beginning skills of tennis! Mini tennis lessons are $30.00 per session. Volume 1, Issue 1 JUNIOR UPDATE NCTC is proud of all of the programs available for JUNIOR TENNIS players at our club. Below please find specific information for our Junior Players. Sunday Afternoon Junior Priority Court Time - Sunday afternoons from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm are priority court time for juniors. This is an excellent opportunity for the juniors to work on what they ve been learning in lessons. Saturday Morning Challenge Matches - Challenge matches are arranged on Saturday mornings; this is a good opportunity to gain match experience, and contributes to the tennis adder results. Talk to the club Pro Brian Draxl to see if this activity is suitable for you. Junior Invitational Events We plan to hold our very popular Junior Invitational events for intermediate and advanced players on selected Saturday evenings and Sunday afternoons during the summer. This may comprise singles and doubles play in an individual or team-oriented format. Play will be by invitation only. Junior Club Tournaments - We plan to run our annual junior club championship singles tournaments for juniors again this year. Watch the junior board in the clubhouse for the notice of the tournament dates. Inter County Teams Once again we will have several teams in the Inter County Tennis Association League for our top competitive juniors. The Boys and Girls teams play Saturday mornings, the Mixed Sunday afternoons, from early May until mid-july against other clubs from Mississauga to Oshawa. In 2014, 2 of our junior teams, the Boys Majors and the Mixed A, won their respective ICTA Championships at the Rexall Centre in September. End-of-Year Junior Awards - the Susan V. Swail Junior Achievement Awards go to the juniors (boy and girl) best exhibiting the qualities of performance, participation, improvement and sportsmanship. The 2014 winners were Nicole Clarke and Liam Draxl. Congratulations to all of our juniors who participate in OTA-sanctioned tournaments! Sign up individually. You will be assigned to one of our TEAM CAPTAINS on the day of the tournament. Sign up sheets available during registration day or at our club house. This is our most popular all ages tournament of the summer season! Don t miss out on the food, fun and prizes!

HOUSE LEAGUE 2015 The Adult House League is made up of 6 mixed teams who play scheduled matches beginning in late May until the end of August. Players must sign up at registration to ensure participation. The players are divided into three categories representing A Advanced & B Intermediate-Advanced who play on Wednesday night and the C Intermediate players who play on Monday night. The main challenge of the league is to have players of matching skill levels competing against each other. Monday House League Matches play at 7:00 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Wednesday House League Matches play at 6:30 p.m., 8:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Courts are available 7:00 p.m.-11:00 p.m. on Wednesdays for the first two weeks (May 6th & 13th) for informal drop in play and our club pro Brian Draxl will conduct evaluation sessions. These sessions will help determine the level of play that each player will be assigned and provide and opportunity to meet new members. Players will be contacted by their team captains after May 13th to advise of their first matches. Your individual schedules and rules will be available for pick up by commencement of League play Wednesday, May 20th and Monday, May 25th. The regular season will end in late August followed by playoffs. And most important, each player will be responsible to obtain replacements for themselves from their own team roster should they not be able to play. Let s enjoy a great season of tennis! Volume 1, Issue 1 INTER COUNTY INFORMATION For intermediate and advanced players interested in competitive tennis with other clubs in and around York Region, we have several levels of inter county play. From mid-may to mid-august, team members practice once a week and play matches against other clubs in their division. Tryouts take place in last week of April. The season cumulates in September when the top two teams in each League will play off at the Rexall Centre.
