Club Newsletter May 2007 PRESIDENT S REPORT - Ross Langdon Over the last 12 months, the MPFSC has continued to develop in all key measurable areas and has evolved into an even more successful Club, with a greater focus on Competitive Swimming. Our successes in the pool have been outstanding. We had 5 members qualify and 4 compete at the National Age Championships, whilst others competed at the State Champs, School State Champs, All Juniors, District Champs, the list goes on. We awarded 50 Participation Awards at our recent AGM, acknowledging swimmers who attended 3 or more club meets. From my perspective this is the key measure of our ability to provide an environment which motivates kids and builds their feeling of belonging to a Club and Team. The fact that all our Senior State and National Squad members enthusiastically participate is quite unique amongst many Clubs. Their attendance provides the younger kids with inspirational role models and I sincerely thank them for their effort and contribution to Club Spirit. Fundamentally there is a very positive vibe around our Club amongst swimmers, coaches and parents. Communication is our biggest challenge. It requires a lot of effort to try and keep all parents and kids in the loop in a manner in which they will actually remember all the bits of information and understand the message. Our ability to communicate more effectively will be greatly enhanced by the launch of our Club website. I would like to thank all the parents who have assisted over the past 12 months in any capacity with activities around the Club and our Executive Committee, General Committee and Sub Committee who put in a lot of time and effort behind the scenes. There is an extraordinary amount of work done to try and provide a positive and motivating environment for 60-70 kids in our small Club. The fact that we have many new parents putting up their hand to help in Sub Committee roles for 07/08 is a positive reflection and very promising for our future. Much of our success can be attributed to our sponsors. Thank you to Beleura Sports and Spinal, Mornington Pool and Spa and CFS for their many years supporting our Club and welcome to The Enchanted Maze, Poolwerx, Mt Eliza and the Sports Injury Clinic, Frankston. Please consider and support them whenever you are seeking products or services they offer. If you do, please ensure they are aware you are from the Flyers! I would also like to thank Steve Sunderland (Quest Carpets) for his continued major sponsorship and Kiddieswim for their sponsorship via acknowledgement of the efforts of the Committee, which is donated back to the Club. Congratulations Flyers on another fantastic year! COACH S REPORT - Ken McGarvin Continuing on from our efforts of the previous year the Club achieved excellent results at both State and National levels. We have had an increased number of swimmers competing at district and invitation meets during both the Summer Long Course and Winter Short Course Seasons. Mention must be made of medalists at the Swimming Victoria Winter Short Course Championships. Jaimi Chisolm achieved a bronze medal in the 200 Backstroke while Shane Gagliardi not only won gold in the 200 Backstroke but also set a new Victorian and All Comers record in that event.

The Club had twenty swimmers qualified to compete at the Summer Long Course Championships. Finalists from the club were Nick, Lachlan, Jaimi, Alex and Kate. Kate was a finalist in four events and achieved a gold medal in the 200 Backstroke and a silver medal in the 100 Backstroke. Alex, Lachlan, Shane and Kate also qualified for the 2007 Australian Age Championships held at the Challenge Stadium in Perth. To compete at this level and finish in the top 20 in Australia as did all our swimmers reflects creditably on the club. Thank you to Shelley who was able to accompany the team to Perth as Assistant Coach and to Lynne for organising everything we needed. At present we are providing for swimmers with differing levels of ability and commitment with 5 squads offered. Top Junior, Developmental, Junior State, Senior State and National. Four coaches are involved in the program. A major and ongoing task for the coaching staff is to motivate swimmers to shift from being involved to being committed by attending the available coaching sessions. On behalf of the coaching staff I thank the committee for their support and friendship. My personal thanks to Ross and Marg for their continual hard work in their efforts to promote and improve the reputation of the swimming club. The future is promising with the Club now being recognised at all levels District, State and National. COMMITTEE TALK Fundraising Our Bunnings sausage sizzle was a BIG success. Thankyou to Christine Ferrier, Chief Organiser and to all those who volunteered their time. Sue Johnson has taken on sponsorships and fundraising and word is she is REALLY good at getting donations out of people (was that 10 or 20 bucks worth of raffle tickets she sold me at the AGM?). Club Merchandise Polotops $35. Jackets $60. Caps $10. Boys/girls bathers $20/$40 (limited sizes left). Please speak to Wendy Forster (9775-3134) for all your club merchandise needs. Website Our website is up and running and Tony Gay has volunteered to be our Webmaster. Tony will be doing amazing things to our website in the coming months so please log onto http://www.peninsulaflyers.org.au and check out all the cool stuff. Photos of the Frankston meet and presentation night are on the website. Bookmark the website today! Newsletter We are hoping to produce a regular newsletter every 6-8 weeks which will be emailed to all club members. Please ensure we have your current email address. If anyone has any suggestions or comments regarding the newsletter please email s.angel@mbs.edu or chat to one of our committee. * * * Thank you to all our committee members who work very hard behind the scenes to ensure the ongoing success of our Club. NEW PRACTICES AND INITIATIVES Junior Excellence Program (JX) Swimming Victoria, in conjunction with Swimming Australia has introduced the Australian Junior Excellence Program (JX). This year, swimmers (9-13 years) who accomplish times set by Swimming Australia at qualifying meets between 1 March 2007 and 28 February 2008 will qualify at Green, Bronze, Silver or Gold standard. This is a great incentive for our young swimmers which recognises and rewards their hard work and dedication. More info is available on the noticeboard or log onto http://www.swimmingvictoria.org.au. You can also go to our Club website and follow the link or speak to Sonia Angel. New Entry Forms Swimming Victoria is phasing out green cards (v2003) over this season. New entry forms (v2007) are now available to download on the Swimming Victoria website.

Spare bathers and equipment No excuses if you have rocked up for training and forgotten your cossie. We now have some spares (pressed and cleaned) as well a few caps located in the silver bag hanging in the shed. Please remember to return! IMPORTANT DATES Our next club meet will be held on Sunday 17 June (4.15-6pm). Please be punctual! * Monash Uni SC meet 10 June ** Melbourne Vicentre SC meet 30 June (priority meet) *** Bayside SC meet 4 August (priority meet). This meet was oversubscribed last year so please get your entries in early. The 2007 Victorian Age Short Course Championships will now be held in September (16 th, 22 nd & 23 rd ). Please check the Swimming Victoria website for more information. A list of recommended events for the 2007/2008 season is located on the noticeboards and includes a guide as to who should attend.
