It takes a lot of work on the off season to keep the club running. Even the wax and racing rooms are spick and span (thanks Roisin).

WELCOME TO 2018/2019 SEASON WELCOME TO 2018/2019 SEASON SCHUSSING INTO WINTER WONDERLAND UPLIFTING UPDATES Welcome Back to the Slopes We hope everyone had a great summer and enjoyed the fantastic weather; maybe you even enjoyed Paddy s Walk, the summer Wednesday member s hill walks. We would also extend a snowy welcome to all our new members. Remember as a member you can avail of discounted lessons. It takes a lot of work on the off season to keep the club running. Even the wax and racing rooms are spick and span (thanks Roisin). To compliment the fresh slopes; our 2018 new club skis have arrived, are set up, and ready for use. Thanks a million to everybody involved. Lessons are starting back In the meantime, lessons are now in full swing with the instructors all having completed their refresher training weekend - learning the latest techniques in the industry; we would like to sincerely thank all of them for their time which they so generously give to the club, without them there would be no club. Well, the season is starting to kick off again. The club and slope, with lots of fresh new Dendex, are in good shape after all the hard effort put in by many members who have worked over the summer break. Thank you to all who toiled under the hot sun. This club can t run without its volunteers. We could not have such a great facility without everyone s amazing input, I am sure I speak for everyone when I say it is much appreciated. New Developments One exciting development is the implementation of the new online booking being introduced on a phased basis. This is now kicking off thanks to the hard work of the office team. Hopefully this will contribute to the smooth running of all our classes this year..

WELCOME TO 2018/2019 SEASON 4 Saturday Mini s Sunday morning Racers at 9:00am at 10am This is for the older children aged from 12 years of age. The Kids Mini s are now back training on It is an exciting group who race both at home and abroad - indeed we Saturday mornings, had some great performances in during the summer with 9 racers this is a great way to get your participating in the Welsh Open and Welsh Championships at children more involved in skiing in a Pontypool ski slope, 8-9th Sept. We had 2 U12 category racers fun relaxed environment; this is for (current minis), 2 girls and 2 boys in the U14 category and 2 girls and children aged from 7 to 12 years old. 1 boy in the U16 category. http://www.skiclub.ie/news-and-events/minis-kids-trainingrecommences-saturday-15th-september contact at minis@skiclub.ie racing@skiclub.ie There were great performances from the U12 contingent with 2 x 3rd places, Oscar Allen won a medal and Amelia Allen won 3rd place in the U14 category on the Saturday. Olivia O'Brien put in a commendable performance both days in the U16 competition not finishing far from a podium place. We are also delighted for Annemarie Lynch, from our race squad who has taken up a place in college in Switzerland on a Ski Scholarship for two years; we would like to wish her all the best in future. We hope this year we can get more members involved in our club league races, we cannot promise snow like we had for the March 2018 races, but we can offer the fun and excitement of skiing down through the gates, being cheered on by all the spectators. This is where the heart of a club flourishes with member participation Adults, Children, Teenagers, Seniors, Veterans, beginners, Minis, Improvers and Advanced skiers. There is a prize giving at the end of the season, with age group winners, perpetual trophies and spot prizes. Club league races are held for members on the 1 st Sunday of each month (2 nd Sunday in January) and cater for skiers of all ages and abilities, really, we mean all abilities; once you can get down from the red station you are destined to enjoy the awesome atmosphere. Club League Races 4 th March 2018

WELCOME TO 2018/2019 SEASON 5 Other Member Activities This is a wonderfully popular night with all ages participating from Minis upwards. It hosts a relaxed atmosphere an informal evening, with group support being truly apparent. It is a credit to the many students who participate ensuring everyone is made feel welcome. There is a range of jumps, boxes and pipes that can be attempted depending on your ability; someone is always on hand to show you the ropes if you venture up to try your hand at freestyling. There is now a consistent bunch of skiers on a Wednesday morning, usually skiing by about 10.30 am and finishing up around 12 where everyone enjoys a relaxed cuppa. These marvelous mornings will be starting back from Oct 3 rd. (If you bring some home baking you will be especially welcome ) The club is also open on Saturday evenings, from 13 th October for members only, where you can enjoy quiet slopes and comradery to practice your skills. We are hoping to introduce a members Get-Together every now and again on a Saturday night to have bit of members banter, let us know what you think or if you have any suggestions. This is a great way to loosen up before your members ski session at 10:30am. Love your Skis Michelle Mangan has offered to run a Love your Skis night. This will be a general informal night on how to wax and edge your skis, aimed at non-racing skiers, who just want the basics in ski waxing and edging. Email info@skiclub.ie if you interested. WELCOME TO 2018/2019 SEASON 8 th and 9 th December Now we must not forget the highlight of the season, hot food, mulled wine and Santa on the slopes! This is the time when all the budding little skiers get to visit Santa and have great fun with all the activities laid on. With the success of our Crafts and Gifts Fair last year we want to build on it in 2018, if you would like to have a stall please contact Ann in the office for more details. Come along and enjoy a hot drink and a festive vibe, you may even fall snow in love under a little mistletoe?!

WELCOME TO 2018/2019 SEASON 7 This year we would love to see all the members become more involved; after all it is OUR club. So if you re not already involved, why not volunteer to help? There are many ways; We will be hosting a din setting workshop on Tues 16 th Oct, 8.15pm to teach all eager to learn! Places are limited so register your interest with Ann in the office. You could then become a din setter, setting up skis before the busy classes. What about becoming a club ambassador, helping those with any question big or small? This is OUR Club Maybe you would like to take your skiing to another level? There is no better way to do that than becoming a ski or snowboard instructor yourself. Yes it is possible; it just takes a little determination and a passion for our sport. Why not find out of you have what it takes, IASI (Irish Association of Snow Sports Instructors) are running a one day Ski and a one day Snowboard Pre-Selection course on the 14 th October. (http://www.iasisnowsports.com/) Go on you know you want to! How about a ski patroller, making sure the slopes are safe and hands are warm with gloves! We are on the lookout for new teaching assistants to help out novices with tricky button lifts or perhaps which ski goes on which foot Powder VS Chowder Whilst skiing is the sport that brings us together, time shared off the slopes is when we really become a club. Why not join our events team and help create ski club memories. If you have some other edge that you want to share - come and join one of the many and diverse committees or sub-committees. You don t need any experience just a love of snowsports and a willingness to learn! At The Ski Club of Ireland, we want everyone to feel welcome whether you are a skier, boarder, or the partner or parent of one. If you feel there is anything we could do better, please let us know; we want to do what we can to make this the best Ski/Board club in the world! In the meantime; Welcome back after the summer, we look forward to skiing and boarding with all our members in the near future. Fun Fact One of the longest artificial slopes has opened in Kopaonik, Serbia it is 900m long using over 10,000 m 2 of material. Info@skiclub.ie is the place to go if you are interested in anything mentioned in this newsletter.
