JUNIOR FINALS - UPS Issue No 12 23 July 2011

Graham Reynolds President s Pen a day to remember! It was a fantastic day at the club Saturday firstly with a good turnout for the presidents luncheon enjoyed by life members, Falconians sponsors and Committee complemented by some good football insight delivered by Greg Stafford and our captain Daniel Breese. With another convincing win from our bullet- proof colts had coach John Gordon smiling with his perfect season to date score intact. No doubt Greg Stafford will be proud to hand the command back to Simon on his return from the USA with two out of two. Good outcomes for all concerned. Congratulations to Grant Hill on being awarded the coveted Bowman Medal for 2011 a worthy recipient who gave us a fine display of his football talent and tenacious approach to the game well done. Now for a little house keeping. It is the time of the year where cash is tight for the club so if you have any monies outstanding for memberships, apparel, fees, sponsorships, raffle tickets etc please see Luke Ewart or Garry Skelton as it is imperative we all tow the line. Enough said. There is no doubt in my mind that we will continue our success to date and enter a cracker jack period to the end of the home and away games so to all supporters and friends of the Lilydale Falcons get on board as this competition is about to separate the wheat from the chaff. I am looking forward to the players ball this Saturday night which will be a night to remember featuring MC extraordinaire Scott McBain and singing sensation Lisa Edwards with the theme A Night in Paris a chance to dress to impress and have some fun. Book it and lock it in now! Graham Ladders AFTER Page 2 The Flanker is prepared and edited by Gerald Toohey (aka Fathertoosa) email lilydale@efl.org.au Page 31

GOALS:, David Hill 4, Daniel Breese 4, Nathan O Keefe 3, John McKay 2, Ashraf Davies 2, Grant Hill, Ben Power and Jake Taylor all 1 goal each. We got away to a slow start but with hard contested footy we broke the game open kicking 4 goals to zero by quarter time. In the 2nd quarter working hard we used the ball well to go in at half time with 9 goals. To keep them goalless was a good effort. In the second half at stages we looked good but at other times we let ourselves down with our disposal. Great to see that we didn t stop after one good quarter and do what good sides do finished off the final quarter full of running and sharing the footy. As the top side we will continue to be challenged each week so the mental approach to the game is just as important as the physical. It will continue to take a full team effort to reap the rewards we have set up so far. The sign at the bar advertising the Spot the Footy says Ya gotta be in it to win it. Well that s exactly what Alfy Cruickshank did the week before last as he won the $50 being one of only 6 entries. Although he was near the mark, a few more entries and he would have been in trouble. This week s competition was a lot tighter as we had 29 entries and Benny Neagle had to put the ball right on the spot to edge out Dean Clements. So come on you blokes, don t wait to be asked. Get your entry in and give yourself a chance of the prize. Its a lot of fun too. While on the subject, there is a promo going around on Facebook encouraging people to take the blood oath and win cash prizes for your club. Blood Oath is a joint campaign between the TAC and AFL Victoria to prevent young people from being killed or seriously injured in road trauma. To take the oath go to www.facebook.com/mybloodoath and register for Lilydale. We could be in the running for some cash prizes and you could win tickets to the AFL Grand Final. Here is one for the romantics especially all you women out there. Way back in 1977 Gerry Toohey and Denise Toohey who had only been married for 3 years, attended a family BBQ at the Trey Bit oval in Jetty Road Sandringham. Well Gerry lost his wedding ring when cooking and cleaning up and it was not realised until they were on their way home and it was dark. So regrettably they kissed the ring good-bye. The ring was engraved with their names, the date of their marriage and the word forever. Well last Sunday Denise was reading the Desperately Seeking column in the Sunday Herald-Sun when one of the notices caught her eye. They were seeking Gerald and Denise (surname unknown) to return a wedding ring I found 30 odd years ago. Well Denise could not dial the number fast enough and it turned out to be Gerry s wedding ring. It is as pristine as the day he lost it and now sits proudly on his ring finger and Denise could not be happier. She still can t get over it. Gerry is a bit chuffed himself getting it back after being lost for 34 years. Now how s that for a happy ending? We started off by celebrating Lachie WILSON S 100 th game. Congratulations Lachie. In the first quarter we were being led to the ball and were a point down at the first break. In the second quarter our class started to shine. We had a number of contributors that ensured that we went in at half time 16 points up. The second half was a fantastic all round game with the boys sharing the ball and playing for each other. The boys didn t let their opponents get back into the game and when everyone plays their role and beats their own opponent the results will always come. A special mention to the forwards led by Liam and Ryan that provided a target all day and the backs that every week played for each other and gave us drive all day. Next week we have the much anticipated final with Norwood. We will need to be on our game from the first bounce. We can t afford a slow start. Let s go Dales. The Flanker O.SMITH. Page 26 Page 7

We were up against the top side today. I told the boys just to play one on one footy and finish the year strong. With the conditions being very poor today we had a lot of the footy in the first quarter but were unable to hit the scoreboard. With Croydon missing a lot of goals, this kept up in the game. The boys were very persistent and tried their hardest all day. We kept them to one point in the third quarter to our two goals, one. In the last five minutes of the match they ran away with a 35 point win. Special thanks to all the helpers this year, Kelsey, Dee, Travis, Ray, Darren, Mario, Leah, Liz, and Norma. The Bowman Medal is presented to the player voted best as per the club's best and fairest voting on the day of the Presidents Luncheon. The medal was struck in honour of former player, President and life member, Michael Bowman. An excellent player and brilliant clubman Michael was an inspiration to all who came into contact with him. Michael took over the Presidency of the club during its difficult period during the 1980s. Always with a smile and positive attitude, Michael Bowman was the epitome of local sport with his "lets get the job done and enjoy life to the fullest" attitude. Michael's term was cut short upon the outset of cancer. He courageously fought and beat the disease but tragically died at the age of 42 following a heart attack. It has been often said that Michael Bowman packed more life into his forty two years than most pack into a life time. Those who knew him would agree. The Bowman Medal holds a very special place in the history of Lilydale Football Club. 1999 - Christian Brandt 2000 - Chris Goodlet The Bowman Medal Winners 2001 - Jamie Cruickshank 2002 - Chris Goodlet 1989 - Brett Toohey 2003 - Chris Goodlet 1990 - Shane Beckwith 2004 - Sean Toohey 1991 - Billy Harrop 2005 - Adrian Gawne 1992 - Terry Dean 2006 - Peter Beaumont 1993 - Sean Ellis & Peter Johnson 2007 - Andrew Seddon 1994 - John Alderdice 2008 - Andrew Seddon/Cameron Linford 1995 - Nathan Bodey 2009 - Andrew Preston 1996 - Gavin Neville 2010 - Marcus Hottes 1997 - Sean Ellis 2011 - Grant Hill 1998 - Sean Ellis Page 10 Page 23

We came up against top team Ferntree Gully needing a win to keep our small chance of playing finals alive. They kicked with a fairly strong wind in the first quarter and through our pressure we were able to limit their goal scoring opportunities. However, in the 2nd quarter we were unable to get quality forward entries ourselves and were never able to apply any scoreboard pressure. In the 2nd half we witnessed why they are the top team as their confidence grew they started running in numbers and spreading and sharing the ball and even though the boys continued to work extremely hard we were unable to have any impact on the game. Even though it got a little ugly on the scoreboard in the end, we couldn't question the boys effort for the day. I would like to take this chance to thank all the boys and their parents for their effort and support over the last 2 years. I look forward to watching their progress from a less stressful position on the other side of the fence in the years to come. Well done boys on a great year, especially the 2nd half. The boys played an undermanned Burwood East and took control of game early, but failed to capitalize on opportunities to score. 2 nd Quarter we broke the game open with Mazza, Nick and Sam getting plenty of the ball after Taylor R s great ruck work yet again! Taylor was also doing plenty around the game which was a great sign. The third quarter we continued to play well in the heavy conditions, Jacob and Bailey Theis had nailed a couple of goals to this stage, Jack Bates on the ball was lively and the Jye Price continued his great form. Coxy off the back line was aggressive at the ball and Lachie Baxter with Tim Aumann were again the rocks in defence. Jack Reischeck and little Finchy were in and under all the day. Tom gave Taylor a well deserved break in the ruck and did a good job when he was there. We possibly tired in the last quarter but the boys came away with a terrific win in the last U 9 game for the year. Congratulations to all the boys that participated and had some fun this year. To think back to the start of the year and to see the boys now, we have absolutely improved and the boys are much more accomplished footballers now well done everyone! Fathertoosa s Outafocus Fotos Juniors Report With President Graeme Donald Well were at the business end of the season and with three teams making it to finals it s sure to be exciting times. The Under 14s, 15s and the Under 16s who get their chance to play finals for the first time. This is a sure turnaround for the 16s as they only had 12 fit players at the start of the season and had to forfeit their first game. This is certainly a case of never say die and then to finish 3rd on ladder after the home and away season is great. All 3 teams have got a second chance so here s hoping they can capitalise on their hard work during the season and get over their opponents this week. Good luck to all the players and coaching staff this week. See the back page for the times and venues of the games.
