The SAG type flat, rubber-steel, balance ropes Application of the SAG ropes: The SAG type, flat, rubber-steel balance ropes, further on called the SAG ropes, are used for shaft transport at mines extracting coal, ores, salt and other usable minerals and also in elevators for transport of people and cargo. Types of the SAG ropes: Non-flammable air temperature from 25 0 C to + 60 O C, Frost proof air temperature from 450 C to + 60 O C. Range of dimensions of the SAG ropes for the mine hoists: The unit mass from 2.5 kg/m to 22.3 kg/m, The rope width from 60 mm to 212 mm, The rope thickness from 22 mm to 35 mm. Till the end of December 2014 the SAG Company had produced 567 ropes. The ropes were sold in Poland, the Czech Republic, Kazakhstan, Germany, Russia, Belarus and Ukraine for hard coal, salt, copper, iron, zinc, lead and nickel ore mines. Up till now: The longest SAG rope produced has been 1600 m long, The heaviest SAG rope produced has weighed 28,990 kg, The longest operational time of the SAG rope exploitation has been 22 years, The largest number of the SAG rope winding operations has been 3.2 million times. 2

The acceptance certificates for the SAG ropes The SAG ropes are produced on the basis of the DT-SAG-2007 technical documentation, which constitutes continuation of acceptance documentation, forming the enclosure of the Acceptance of the State Mining Authority, File Ref. No. GEM/44704/0001/04/05413/AZ dated 23.04.2004 (earlier: File Ref. No. EM-619/4004/1/94/Zt dated 15.04.1994, File Ref. No. EM-639/4004/29/90 dated 03.07.1990). Since 2005 the hoisting ropes have been excluded from the certification procedure. In 2004 the SAG Company received the certificate authorizing it to mark the SAG ropes with the safety marking the Certificate No. B/832/2004 dated 22.03.2004. The certifying authority was Główny Instytut Górnictwa (the Chief Mining Institute) in Katowice. In the following years: 20007, 2010, 2013 the certificate validity period was extended recently till 20.03.2016 the Certificate No. B/832/IV/2013. In 2006 the SAG Company received the certificate of the Management System complying with EN ISO 9001:2000, in the scope of Production and service of the SAG type balancing ropes: manufacturing of rubber products; repairs of mining machines and devices; fuel and oil trade. The certifying authority was the TÜV CERT, TÜV NORD CERT GmbH, the certificate register No. 44 100 063075 dated 07.07.2006. In 2009 the certificate was updated and its validity was extended in compliance with EN ISO 9001:2008. In 2012 the next validity period extension was received till 06.07.2015. In 2013 the SAG Company received the Safety Management System Certificate complying with the EN-N-18001:2004. The certifying authority was the TÜV CERT, TÜV NORD CERT GmbH. 3

The ropes are vulcanized on their entire length in rubber coating. Depending on required unit mass and minimal breaking load, which breaks a rope completely, there are 2, 4, 6 or 8 pcs of steel ropes vulcanized inside the SAG rope with diameters from 12 mm to 24 mm, with strength class 1370, 1570, 1670 N/mm 2. For the personal/service elevators the SAG ropes are constructed from steel ropes with dia. of 4.2 mm and strength of 1770 N/mm 2. DESCRIPTION Minimal guaranteed breaking force F min. Advantages of the SAG ropes The SAG rope construction provides: corrosion resistance (providing of rubber coating continuity grants long lasting corrosion resistance), possibility of controlling the rope technical condition using non-destructive magnetic method upon the technical acceptance at the producer s and during exploitation, more peaceful operation of the SAG ropes in comparison with flat, steel and round balancing ropes in a shaft, due to a small radius of natural rope loop (the loop shape close to the letter U) and minimalized rope unlaying. maintaining of practically constant mass during the entire time of exploitation due to lack of adhesion of small particles originating from coal and other materials in a shaft, compatibility with flat, steel balancing rope suspensions, possibility of precise selection of the mass of 1 meter length of rope depending on the ordering party requirements, possibility to repair rope surface by vulcanizing or bonding during the rope exploitation in a shaft. construction of the SAG rope is featured by separation of the particular cables with rubber layers. This kind of connecting helps to eradicate mutual abrasion of wires of the neighboring cables, which influences the SAG rope operating duration. Moreover, in case of damaging of the rubber coating there is no chance for water penetration to the neighboring cable and its corrosion. The listed advantages of the SAG ropes result consequently in work safety improvement and lowering of exploitation costs. Application of the SAG type, flat, steel-rubber balance ropes in mining elevator shafts increases 3 times durability of such ropes as compared to the previously used steel ropes (in a number of cases the rope operation time increased even 6 times). 5

Testing of the SAG ropes and repairing of rubber surfaces The SAG rope is subject to the magnetic model testing during technical acceptance test at the manufacturer s using the LRM diagnostic. The LRM magnetic diagnostic system for the SAG ropes: the LRM-SAG-2 measuring head, the LRM defectoscope. Rubber coating of the SAG rope provides effective protection against corrosion due to adverse reacting of the operation environment of the steel cables inside of the SAG rope. Each accidental, mechanical damage of the rubber coating should be repaired within the shortest time possible. The SAG Company has a repair service division for repairs of the SAG ropes during their exploitation in mining shaft hoists. The rubber coating repairs are executed depending on the kind of damage by: Bonding, Vulcanizing (replacement of the coating on the damaged place). The WPO-2 vulcanizing press, fire-tight. 6
