Mayflyer What s Emerging PRESIDENT S MESSAGE WOW! What a great banquet. Our tentative estimate for profit for the evening is $26,600 with some possible bills and donations still outstanding. For those of us who dedicated many hours to the fundraiser it s a sweet reward. Dan Brandt and his committee are to be commended for another fundraiser well done. Thanks to the more than 40 people who helped on Saturday morning and evening and to everyone else who contributed to making the event successful. Our Ladies in Lancaster County Coldwater Conservation Breakfast has drawn incredible interest. So much so, that we have capped attendance at 25. Anyone applying now will be put on a waiting list. Faye Haering, committee chairperson, has done an excellent job and has put together a very enjoyable program. DTU s hope for the event is to encourage more women to participate in DTU s cold water conservation projects. This year we did not have any applicants for the annual Rivers Conservation and Fly Fishing Youth Camp at Allenberry on the Yellow Breeches. This week-long program is an excellent summer program for youth 14-17. We pay registration for our limit of two youths. Everyone who has participated has raved about the week, citing the smorgasbord of activities as one of the best workshops/classes they have ever attended. Hopefully we can send two youths next year. We will be adding at least three more classes to our Trout in the Classroom project for next year. This will bring our total to nine. The TIC program is a complete classroom-ready conservation and biology curriculum for middle and high school kids. The classroom is provided with all the necessary equipment to raise trout from eggs to fingerlings. The classes watch the young trout progress through the various stages, often naming them along the way. When the trout have reached the fingerling stage, in the spring, the class makes a field trip to an approved waterway where the students will release the fingerlings to fare for themselves. Teachers who have participated in the program, highly recommend it as being pertinent and ap- Donegal Trout Unlimited propriate for use in their classes. Kudos to Ned Bushong, our new education chair, for soliciting the new schools. The DTU Board is considering a Casino Night as a possible fundraiser, either in place of or in addition to our banquet/fundraiser. Several Board members will contact companies which provide all the equipment and directions for such an evening and report their findings to the Board. I would appreciate your comments pro or con regarding the idea and whether it should replace or be in addition to the current fundraiser. New Fly Fishing Catch and Release Only signs have been posted on the section of Lititz Run from the Millport Conservancy downstream to just above the Reflections Restaurant, the portion where DTU has done upgrading and repair work. They replace the signs that had allowed any artificial lures. This has been done to better protect the fish. Enjoy a lot of fabulous spring fishing. April 2012 Vol. 42 # 2 WAYNE The charm of fishing is that it is the pursuit of what is elusive but attainable, a perpetual series of occasions for hope author unknown Corner Volunteer Badges for fishing Millport Conservancy in 2012 are now available. Purchase them at a meeting for $20 or contact me for mailing instructions, at a cost of $22.50 including postage. Check or money order only. Current members of Donegal TU or Millport Conservancy only. Contact Faye Haering at fayeonthefly@comcast.net or 285-2572. Volunteers will be needed for the Fly-on-the-Run on May 16 th & 17 th, as well as for stocking Lititz Run just prior to the event. Volunteers will be needed for Youth Field Day, Saturday, June 2 at Southern Lancaster County Farmer Sportsmen's Association in New Providence. Committee Reports PROGRAMS APRIL On April 18 th Gary Roulston will take us to South America, relating the adventures of a group from DTU flyfishing for trout in Patagonia. MAY For the May chapter meeting, photographer Frank Plucinsky will be giving us tips on Outdoor and Fishing Photography. If you ve never seen one of Frank s presentations, you are in for a treat. JUNE The June chapter meeting will be our first picnic of the year, at Millport Conservancy on June 20 th. Note that this meeting also begins our summer meeting hours and starts at 6 pm. There will be no meeting in July. CONSERVATION COMMITTEE BOB ALBRIGHT PROGRAM CHAIRMAN CLIMBERS RUN REVISITED! On March 8th, representatives from the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service along with Matt Kofroth, Lancaster County Watershed Specialist and some DTU Board members visited Climbers Run to view the stream damage due to the 100-year flood of September 2012. They found that repairs as well as additional devices are needed to bring the restoration project to a successful completion. We are now in the process of getting estimates for the labor as well as the materials. There is a strong possibility that DTU will again partner with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service to complete the project. If the board approves the project, then we will be working on both Amish farms as before. Work could not start before June 15th due to Fish Commission laws. CONOWINGO 2012 As for the 3 projects coming up on the Conowingo Creek Watershed, they are all designed as well as permitted. Construction will begin in late June. Also, both the Fishing Creek as well as the Charles Run projects are designed and permitted. Expect construction to start in late September or early October. All in all DTU will have 6 projects started this summer. An aggressive plan to be sure, however, both the workload and scheduling will be completed this year. I want to thank all the volunteers who in the past have come out to help us on our DTU projects. We will need your support again this year. WOMEN S WORKSHOP BOB KUTZ CONSERVATION CHAIRMAN Our first Ladies in Lancaster County Cold Water Conservation Breakfast is shaping up rapidly for Saturday, April 28 at Millport Conservancy. We have closed registration at 27 women. This event will introduce participants to our activities in cold water conservation and local stream restoration, as well as the work of Millport Conservancy. It will also include an introduction to fly fishing, casting and fly tying. Representatives from TCO flyshop will be there as well. The event will run from 8:30 am until 11:30 am. FAYE HAERING & BOB ALBRIGHT COORDINATORS BANQUET Well, the 2012 Banquet is over and I believe a good time was had by all. Not all the final numbers are in yet, we still need to pay a few bills but from what we can tell it was another great year. About $26,000 dollars will be the total profit from this year and that I think is good for the way the economy is going. A few big winners from the evening: The $1000 TCO gift card winner was Harold Alleman of Manheim, the $500 Bass Pro card winner was Mike Houck of Gap, the Grey s Rod and Reel went to Steve Borza of Ephrata and the TFO Rod and Reel went to Roy Crawford of Lancaster. The Bingo Card Winners: $500 TCO Gift Card went to Mark Gutshall, the Bennelli Shotgun winner was Nate Brandt. Next year s Banquet is set for March 30, 2013 at the Host Resort again. Mark your calendar for another fundraising evening. I would like to thank all that attended and donated to this year s banquet, we would not have had the great success without your generous donations. Also to all that put the effort in helping to gather items, pick items up, and beg for all they could get; a big thank you to them also. My banquet committee is the best. As most of you all have seen the banquet brochure, this thing is amazing. I would like to thank Mark McMaster for the outstanding job he does year after year putting all the info I send him and working on all the ads that we solicit in the past few months. This brochure gets larger and more detailed every year and this year I think is the best yet. I look forward to seeing everyone again next year as we help raise money for stream improvement projects throughout Lancaster County. Tight Lines to all, BIG BROTHERS/BIG SISTERS OF LANCASTER DAN BRANDT BANQUET CHAIRMAN Our annual Big Brothers/Big Sisters fishing event will be held Saturday, June 9th at the Bushong s Farm from 10am -Noon, with lunch provided by the Bushongs. We would like 8-10 DTU volunteers to help teach the kids the joy of fishing. Directions: From Route 30 Take the Lititz Pike Exit and take 501 North. Turn Right on Owl Hill Road (continue on Pierson Road). Turn left onto Rothsville Road (772 West.) Take the first right onto Clay Road. Travel 2.6 miles. The Bushong Farm is on the left about halfway down the hill. 3
