KNYSNA YACHT CLUB (Established 1910) Newsletter December 2018 Commodores Corner #6 Andrew Finn Dear members The Knysna s busy season has arrived The Piano and The Restaurant As you will have all noticed the restaurant floor has been sanded and we have moved the piano into the centre of the restaurant. This is a fun place to be and we therefore invite any member who would like to use the piano to just pop down and come play during breakfast, lunch or dinner just check in with Lovemore or Rob when you arrive. We will continue the Friday evening piano sessions during the season. Pizza at KYC The Clubs new Pizza oven is up and running Pizzas are being served Tuesdays, Thursdays (evenings) and Saturdays 14:00 till 15:00. Enjoy! Happy holidays Happy Holidays to all our members and guests, have a well -deserved break over this traditional Festive Period and a Happy New Year. As a team your KYC Gencom wishes you all the best for the New Year. The Club is in good shape the staff and members will be on duty over the season to assist you and make your break memorable. Who s Who at KYC We have the privilege of having the following key persons to assist you; Club Manager is Rob Clark, he is assisted by Nicky Sacks (Members hip and Secretary), Lovemore Tembo (Restaurant and Bar Manager), Elton Bowers (Our chef and his team) and Jason Soanes (Bosun, Parking and maintenance manager) Floating Jetties in front of the club The club jetties in front of the club are for the use of members to drop off and collect persons, and or supplies. Please be courteous to other users and allow everyone a turn. If you need to leave your boat for more than 4 hrs please arrange with Rob Clark or Jason Soames. Remember Saturday sailing keelboats in the morning and dinghy s in the afternoon. We thank you in advance for your assistance.

Disabled Parking The club is busy at the moment all disabled parkers please display your official (Doctor supported) disabled parking sticker when using the clubs disabled bays. Upcoming events Please note the club has the following key events between now and the New Year, you are welcome to join and be part of them all. 14 th December - KYC Annual Christmas Party details at the club website www.knysnayachtclub.com 29 th December - Knysna Rotary Splash Festival will be held from the Club and is a swim and duck race. Details at www.knysnasplash.co.za 31 st December - KYC Years party music and fun with Gary White all night details at the club and tickets will be on sale at the door. www.knysnayachtclub.com Well done to our dinghy sailors Have a look at the inshore notes below, KYC did it again at the Annual December Theewaters Grand Slam we won both the Finn and Hobie classes! Off shore Sailing Earle Seals This last month was filled with much activity with regard to the off shore sailing group. All Saturdays were very well attended, no spare seats at the breakfast table, so it was fortunate that regular skippers were in attendance with sufficient berths on available yachts. We managed to go to sea on all weekends with sufficient wind to do some good sailing although generally we could have done with something a bit stronger to get the adrenaline going. Saturday 24th was the day of our pre Xmas party. After a good mornings sailing yachts rafted up in featherbed bay for great braai and refreshment. Ku an Yin and Grace were fist to anchor and were joined by the rest of the fleet. A great time was held with much hospitality and conviviality before returning to the club in the late afternoon.

We often have visiting yachts all with their own interesting stories all to a pattern, but occasionally something really different. Fleur de Passion a 33m ketch built in 1930 something as a gun boat for the German navy and then converted to a very capable sailing yacht and registered in Switzerland of all places. The yacht is sailing around the world with 4 missions 3 of which relate to surveys, such as pollution - weather-etc., but to me the most interesting was the make up of the crew. They take on 2 young people who have been committed for substance abuse and according to the skipper they have had great success in getting them right. Also they take on local young crew on each leg of the voyage. What a great way of giving young people a new and better chance in life! Regarding the nav aids in the estuary, we attended a Parks board meeting to learn that they are consulting with SAMSA and will be upgrading the facilities at some time. We offered to be part of the process and will be chasing this up and will advise of any progress. With many requests to revive the now defunct Buffalo challenge, we are looking at a similar event when tides suit in mid-january. A notice will be placed on the notice board and sent out on the Keeler group whatsap shortly. In-shore Sailing John Winfield The slow start to the Sailing Season has continued into the season. Races have generally either been poorly attended or altogether abandoned due to insufficient numbers turning up to warrant a race. Having said that, KYC had a great turnout at the Theewaters kloof Regatta held over the weekend of 1 & 2 December. Dave Shilton took line honours in the Finn class, with Dudley I saacs a close second. In the Hobie 16 tussle, William and Lucinda Edwards edged out Blane and Roxanne Dodds, followed by Douglas Edwards and PJ taking third spot. Declan and Adam Nurse did well to come in 7 th place. Here s hoping we see some sailing happening in the rest of December after Knud s Cup 1 was called off on 1 December due to poor turnout of sailors. At the time of writing, Knud s Cup 1 & 2 was scheduled to take place on 8 December, followed by Westminster Trophy 1 and 2 scheduled for 15 and 22 December. Let s hope the New Year sees more sailors taking up the challenge to get on the water. Plans are well underway for our own Interclub to be held on 16 & 17 February 2019. It would be great to see a large contingent from KYC defending their hono ur at this event, which is always well attended by visiting clubs. Canoe Polo Trials @ Training Camp Nelson das Fontes The first of three selection camps took place in Parys @ the Likkewaan Canoe Club over the first weekend of December. The next training camp will be in Knysn a (February 2019) and then KZN(March 2019). With the largest ever number of players attending in juniors and seniors, made this one the most successful training camps in South Canoe polo history. With the numbers of players attending means that no-one is guaranteed a spot. Teams will be announced in March 2019 at SA champs in KZN. This is extremely exciting for Knysna canoe polo as all our players impressed all the coaching staff and selectors, hard is work is paying off. Our ten young players( 5 boys and 5 girls) all fighting for a spot in the U21 teams that will attend next year s Juniors Worlds in Ireland with 23 countries taking part and then World Champs in Italy in 2020.

They were put through a four day of intense testing. They are great ambassadors both on and off the pitch for Knysna & Knysna Yacht club. I m extremely proud of our juniors on what we have accomplished in such a short time. We are now looking for more kids from the ages of 13 years old to join us as we need the next wave of youngsters to start. Club Maintenance Mike Jacobs Maintenance is ongoing at the Club this department will be taking a well-deserved break over the holiday period and only emergency work will be done.
