The Blue Hose will look for their first win of the season as they wrap up the non-conference portion of their schedule. Scouting the Spartans USC Upstate enters Sunday with a 1-7-0 record after falling to Wofford on Friday night, 2-0. The Spartans opened their season with a 1-0 double-overtime victory over VMI and have lost their last seven, scoring their last goal three matches ago against UNC Asheville on August 30. Michelle Calmeyn leads the team with a goal and an assist. Series History PC holds a 5-0 edge in the series, never losing to USC Upstate since the first meeting in 2002. The Blue Hose have not allowed a goal to the Spartans in the last three contests, holding a total 8-1 scoring edge. PC edged Upstate last season at home for its first win of the season, 2-0, on goals from Sara Simpson and Kelly Kozera Setting the Pace Tori Lopez and Stephanie Allen lead the Blue Hose with two goals apiece on the season. Alice Blackwell joined the ranks of goal-scorers with a penalty shot against Jacksonville. Sara Simpson s two assists pace the squad in that category while Sophie Cobb has a goal and an assist. Jordan Broadway leads the team in net, with five starts and a 1.70 goals against average. Last Time Out PC dropped a home contest against Jacksonville on September 6, a match that came to a halt for two hours due to lightning in the area. Alice Blackwell tied the game at 1-1 with a penalty shot goal in the 65th minute, but two more scores from the Dolphins gave the visitors a 3-1 win. Next Up for the Blue Hose... PC will play its next four matches against Virginia teams and begins Big South Conference play on the road with a pair of matchups, beginning at Liberty on Thursday at 7 p.m. The Blue Hose then take on Longwood before hosting Radford and VMI.

Cardiac Kids The Blue Hose went into overtime in their first two matches of the 2012 season, tying PC s Record When... last year s overall season total. Blackwell will serve as senior captain while Emily Boggus (Conyers, Ga.) and Stephanie Allen (Augusta, Ga.) maintain co-captain duties. Addition By Division On August 2, the NCAA Executive Committee voted to approve Presbyterian College s full certification to Division I. The Blue Hose will now be eligible for NCAA and Big South Conference postseason play for the first time since joining the league and playing a Division I schedule since the 2007-08 season. New Blood The team welcomes seven newcomers as Chandler Carter, Sophie Cobb, Christy Darracott, Sydney Fontenot, Hannah Gaither, Madison Smith and Alison Stelling join the Blue Hose. Most will be expected to contribute immediately for the squad and all saw action against SC State in the team s preseason scrimmage. At the Polls The Big South Conference announced its annual women s soccer preseason poll on August 6, tabbing PC to finish 11th. The Blue Hose have exceeded expectations every year since playing their first Big South Conference season in 2008, beating an 11th place prediction last year by finishing ninth. A Team of Distinction In June, the Blue Hose earned a Public Recognition Award from the NCAA for its latest Academic Progress Report (APR) score. The distinction honors PC women s soccer for an APR in the top 10 percent of Division I women s soccer programs in the nation. The Blue Hose are one of 13 athletic programs in the Big South Conference and the only League women s soccer team to receive a Public Recognition Award. This year s award marks the third straight for the program as well. 2011 in Review PC s History vs. USC Upstate (5-0-0) Date Home/Away Result Score 9/4/2002 A W 1-0 9/2/2003 H W 2-1 8/31/2004 A W 1-0 10/25/2005 H W 2-0 9/18/2011 H W 2-0 Sunday in the Big South Gardner-Webb vs. Layfayette High Point at West Virginia Longwood at Cleveland State SC State at Liberty VMI at Navy Campbell at Western Carolina PC at USC Upstate 2012 Big South Standings (as of September 14) 12 p.m. 2 p.m. 2:30 p.m. 3 p.m. Conference Overall Team W L T W L T Campbell 0 0 0 3 1 1 Longwood 0 0 0 4 2 0 Radford 0 0 0 4 2 0 Liberty 0 0 0 4 3 0 Coastal Carolina 0 0 0 3 4 0 CSU 0 0 0 2 3 0 High Point 0 0 0 1 3 3 Winthrop 0 0 0 2 4 0 UNC Asheville 0 0 0 2 5 0 VMI 0 0 0 1 3 0 Gardner-Webb 0 0 0 1 4 0 PC 0 0 0 0 6 0

At the Helm Brian Purcell returns as PC s head coach for the 24rd year. Purcell, the only coach in program history, enters this season with a 229-163- 19 career record. A 1987 graduate of PC, Purcell won the South Atlantic Conference Coach of the Year award seven times and earned the National Soccer Coaches Association of America s Coach of the Year award in 1994.
