VIKINGS BASEBALL HALL OF FAME In conjunction with the 1994 renovation of Ronnie Spelman Field, home of the La Jolla Vikings Baseball team, the Jim Milligan and Ord Preston Hall of Fame was established. Mr. Milligan and Mr. Peterson had been long standing supporters of La Jolla High School as well as Vikings baseball. To honor these two friends of our baseball program, the Hall of Fame, which recognizes significant achievements in Vikings baseball, was established and named after them. The names of those individuals inducted into the Hall of Fame are listed on the dugout wall and their photos are on display in the Brent Woodall Clubhouse. A committee headed by the baseball coach meets annually to consider individuals whose names should be permanently inscribed in the Vikings Baseball Hall of Fame. From 1966 so the present, statistical records are available for over twenty offensive and pitching categories. Players who participated in this time period were considered based on their achievements in the following categories: listed among career leaders; listed among season leaders; Vikings annual batting champions; Vikings annual E.R.A. leader; recognition in the CIF Record Book; all-conference honors; all-cif honors; college baseball experience; and professional baseball experience. A point system was established and the selection of players from 1966 to the present was guided and aided by the total points accumulated. Special consideration is given to those who are the all-time career leader in a category, who earn recognition beyond being named to the all-conference of all CIF team such as Union-Tribune or CIF player of the year, or all state or national recognition. Significant achievement at the collegiate and/or professional level is also considered. A player is eligible for consideration for the Hall of Fame three years after his graduation from high school. Players were selected who played for La Jolla High prior to 1966 for whom no statistics were available. Interviews with coaches, rival players, and contemporaries were conducted to determine those worthy of recognition in the Hall of Fame. Special consideration was (and will continue to be) given to a small, but very important group, whose impact on Viking baseball over the years cannot be measured by statistics. Their contributions are such that they are deserving to be recognized alongside those who hit and pitched for La Jolla High School baseball teams.
