Fun starts at 6:30pm. Join us for this fun event!! You will be glad you did! President s Report As I was leaving the course last week, I was greeted by a most heartwarming sight. Children of all ages were scattered everywhere on the front nine, carrying little bags, swinging clubs and lining up putts. Golf is a game that can be played for a lifetime and I am so proud of Mimosa Hills to introduce and encourage these children into the game. Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children, play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood - Fred Rogers We have survived the aerification and the course is really healing well and will be in prime condition for the Member/Guest. Consider bringing a guest and introduce them to one of the finest golf courses in western North Carolina. Lead by example and fill as many divots as you can. (From the Chairman continued on page 2)

From The Chairman cont: 2 Continued from Page 1 Our ongoing pool funding campaign has not been as successful as we had hoped. We only have generated less than half of the needed funds. Therefore, the fund campaign is regretfully suspended. All donations will be returned. If you gave a check to Megan Sacchetti, please contact her to refund you. If you sent a check to the club, you will receive your donation by check from our office. Although the funding campaign was not successful, the Board of Directors will continue to pursue alternative funding. Our pool will not open this year, but it is my sincere hope we can do so in the future. I would like to welcome our newest members: Non Resident: Charles Gershon, Dennis Setzer & Jill Marshall, Jesse Frazier, Daniel & Cierra Honeycutt, Michael & Rhonda Hicks, Kenneth McDowell, Philip & Lucretia Murphy, Richard & Teresa Arpin, Jim & Mary McGee, Andrew & Betsy White, Donald & Donna McKee, David Beaman, Matt Blanchard and Mario Chip & Denise Albano. There are a lot of new faces at the club. Please make the effort to introduce yourself and make them feel welcome. UPDATE: A special called meeting was held on Thursday, May 12th to vote on First Citizen's refinancing of Mimosa Hill's loan. The vote was 114 for and 1 against with 32 proxy votes not returned and therefore the motion passes. As soon as the paperwork is completed, roof repair will commence. I want to thank all who participated in this worthwhile endeavor. John Sallstrom, President Respectfully submitted, John F. Sallstrom, President

Grounds Report & MHPDC Update: 6 If you would like to participate in helping keep Mimosa in tip top shape, you can adopt a flower bed as well as adopt a hole. There are many areas that need attention, (like the club entrance for example). If you would like to participate in the adopt a hole (or flowerbed) program, please contact me at knox.matthews@sglcarbon.com. Knox Matthews Preservation Donors Club Update- A great time was had by all who attended the first annual donor appreciation event. Golfers competed in a friendly team best ball followed by beer, wine and hors d'oeuvres with spouses invited. We currently have 56 members who have generously pledged over $41,000. Thank you. As you've probably seen, the repairs to hole number twelve are already underway. It's not too late to donate and join the club. We have more projects in the pipeline as money for them becomes available.

On The Course: 7 The greens healed up extremely well after aerification (2 weeks). Of the 3 aerification and topdressings, the May one is the most important to help our cool-season bentgrass greens survive the summer heat. The sand filled holes allow the greens to drain and breathe well. Oxygen exchange in the thatch and soil profile is vital for heat release and fending off disease pressure (which will occur every summer in this area). Previous newsletters and the Carolinas Golf Association Agronomist s (Bill Anderson) report have explained the amount Life and Events at of organic matter needed to be removed and the amount of sand applied to have top Mimosa Hills performing bentgrass greens. There is no getting around this necessary evil and some sacrifices have to be made on playing conditions to accomplish the goals. May 2014 Thanks to a mild winter, the bermudagrass has come out in great shape. The golf course was fertilized in late May and is primed for some healthy growth. Although we complain about trying to keep it cut and you the golfer about tough rough, the grass has to be fed properly to remain in good health. And in this part of the country that is especially important for winter survival. The tree removal and branch pruning has come to a end on hole #12. Great job by our staff and Brian Lanigan s Tree Service! More sunlight was needed to have the bermudagrass survive and flourish. Stump grinding will be next on the agenda followed by cart path repair, tilling of compacted and uneven soil, hydro-seeding and finally sod laying. Many thanks to the organizers and donators for the Mimosa Hills Preservation Club. We are all looking forward to the new look on hole #12 and to ongoing future golf course improvement projects. Please remember to fill your divots with sand in the fairways and tees. If you do not have sand you can beat the divot from all directions with your iron. This method is actually the best way for the bermudagrass to grow-in the divot. Most of the year we are off the cart paths with the golf carts and allow roaming in the fairways but please keep the carts on the asphalt at all tee and green areas. Try to do the 90 degree rule in fairways as much as possible. Remember to push inwards when fixing ball marks on the greens and do not lift upwards which tears the roots. Using a proper repair tool is best. When you end up in the bunker please make an extra effort to leave it in better condition than you entered it and encourage others to do the same. This is especially important to discuss this with our younger golfers. Thank you for your support and many thanks to the volunteers in the adopt a hole program! This is a great golf course to be proud of! Dan Winters, Superintendent

Membership News: 9 To the membership, Our membership continues to grow. Thanks in part to renovations taking place at Country Club of Asheville and Catawba Country Club this summer and fall, Mimosa Hills will see several of our newest members coming from these fine clubs. We need to do all we can to show them why Mimosa Hills is so special to all of us and make sure that they continue on as a part of our family long after their home clubs are back up to their normal standards. Let s keep the ball rolling to support the growing needs of the club. Best regards, Don McGinnis Membership Chairman PHONE UPDATE: After discovering that our old phone system was going to require significant expenditures to revive it, the club decided to explore other options. As a result of that effort, we have now installed and implemented a new SIP based phone system from Nextiva. When you dial the club, you will now be greeted by an automated system that will quickly and efficiently direct you to the department you are seeking, thus ending the need for dialing separate phone numbers to reach the office, pro shop or dining room. Please ask anyone on our staff to address any issues you may face as we all become accustomed to this more modern system and pass along your thanks to the staff who embraced this change and helped so much to make its introduction to the club run so smoothly. 828-437-2967
