WOMEN S SOCCER MaRqUette invitational vs. St. Mary s Friday, Sept. 6, 2013 7:30 p.m. CT Valley Fields Women s Soccer Contact: Megan O Shea megan.oshea@marquette.edu Phone: (414) 288-7419 The No. 25 Marquette women s soccer team (2-2) is happy to return to Valley Fields for its 2013 home opener when the Golden eagles host St. Mary s on Friday, Sept. 6 at 7:30 p.m. CT as part of the first annual Marquette invitational. The game will follow Loyola-Chicago vs. Colorado College, which is set to kick-off at 5 p.m. on Friday. MU went 1-1 last weekend at the Notre Dame adidas invitational. The Golden eagles fell in a 2-1 battle to then No. 4 UCLA before picking up a convincing 4-1 decision over Oakland. Senior Ashley Stemmeler and juniors, Alex Heffron, Mady Vicker and Mary Luba each recorded a goal in the game. St. Mary s owns a 1-3 record heading into Friday s game. The Gael s fell in both of their outings last weekend; a 2-0 decision to Colorado and another 2-0 outing against No. 25 Denver. St. Mary s has recorded 56 shots this season, while its opponents are recording 59. The matchup is the first-ever meeting between the two programs. Friday is Root Beer Float night at the Valley. Root beer floats will be free for all students and a $1 donation for all other fans in attendance. The game is also a double fanatic point night and camper reunion night. Fans should arrive early: Fans of both teams are encouraged buy tickets in advance and arrive early due to limited seating for home matches. Capacity for men s and women s soccer games at Valley Fields this fall is capped at 500 fans until the ongoing stadium project is finished in early October. She currently ranks second on MU s all-time leaders list with 31 and needs just three more assists to become Marquette s career assists leader. Regina Sekyra (1994-97) currently ranks first with 33 assists. tournament honors: Seniors emily Jacobson and Taylor Madigan were named to the Notre Dame adidas invitational all-tournament team following the conclusion of last weekend s games. Madigan handed out the assist on freshman Ashley Handwork s goal for the Golden eagles against No. 4 UCLA. Jacobson anchored MU s defense for the weekend and helped hold the Bruins to just three shots on goal. hot shooting: Marquette is outshooting opponents, 71-43 this season and own a 26-14 shots on goal advantage. The Golden eagles 71 shots ranks third amongst BiG east squads, while their 17.75 shots per game average ranks fourth. MU held No. 4 UCLA to just three shots on goal in the 2-1 loss last Friday, and recorded five. WelcoMe to the valley: The Golden eagles made their first appearance on their home field, Valley Fields on Friday. Through the years MU has been tough to beat on its home pitch and own a 39-3-5 record throughout the past four seasons. The Golden eagles have not lost a game at Valley Fields since Oct. 30, 2011 when they fell to Notre Dame in a BiG east Tournament quarterfinals contest. helping handwork: Freshman Ashley Handwork scored her first collegiate goal against No. 4 UCLA last weekend, which was also the lone goal for the Golden eagles in the 2-1 loss.
