Sokol Detroit Unit Meeting Minutes July 11, 2017 The meeting, which was held at Sokol Camp, was called to order at 7:05PM by President, Sr. Renata Greene. Twenty-four members were in attendance. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited. It was reported that Br. Rodney St. Thomas had hip replacement surgery today, and Br. Vaclav Kalivoda was in the hospital but is now at home and feeling well. Sokol Detroit Sunshine Lady, Sr. Helen Turchan, sent sympathy cards to the family of Sr. Helen Seidel. Sr. Siedel s Memorial Service is scheduled for Saturday, August 19, 11:00AM, at Sokol Center. Application for Membership: Sr. Melanie Mily reported that Joseph Villarosa, who was accepted for Sokol Detroit membership in June, will be initiated at the August meeting. Correspondence and Bills: Sr. Jarmila Kalivoda submitted a bill for cleaning the Sokol Detroit flag and its storage bag. Executive Board Officers Reports: President s Report: Sr. Greene read a letter from Borek Lizec, Consul General of the Czech Republic in Chicago, Illinois. In July 2016, Sr. Greene submitted a grant application to the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs, requesting financial help in both the implementation of projects relating to information on the Czech Republic and for repair/maintenance at Sokol Center. Consul General Lizec wrote that our grant was accepted. A report on the grant s implementation and supporting documents are required by January 2018. Sr. Greene will submit a new grant application for 2018. Sr. Greene reported on the successful National American Sokol Organization Slet in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, June 22-25. The Slet Banquet was held at the National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library. Sr. Greene spoke on the outstanding exhibits on display: Twists and Turns, The Story of Sokol, through December 31, 2017; and a special Dale Chuilley glass exhibit, through October 1, 2017. Mr. Chuilley is of Slovak heritage. Many of Sokol Detroit members also enjoyed visiting the many Czech heritage venues, including St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church and its adjoining Czech Heritage Park. The Park includes a 14-foot-high replica of the St. Wenceslaus statue that appears on the Charles Bridge in Prague. Srs. Ann Marie Hurych and Kirsten Conley were excused. Education Director: Sr. Susan Bares reported on an Associated Press article on an unusual Czech Orchestra, Tap Tap, which gives students at a renowned school for the disabled in Prague an extracurricular activity. Many of the musicians are in wheelchairs with serious disabilities. The 20-member orchestra has played in many European capitals and has scheduled concerts in New York City, Washington, D.C., and Chicago. BOI: Sr. Lynn Conrad reported. Fifteen Sokol Detroit members participated in various events during the Cedar Rapids Slet. Summer classes are currently in session at the Center through August 29. Our financial responsibility regarding associate dues to ASO is up to date. UPC: Br. Alex Novacek reported on the progress at the Center. The gymnasium floor is being resealed. The Center continues to have a drainage problem, as the building is situated below the large apartment complex to the west. Br. Novacek will have a discussion with the apartment management company soon. New plastic folding chairs and tables were purchased and placed at the Camp and Center. Br. William O Reilly will be sending out an announcement soon advising membership of the availability of the old tables. The walk-in cooler at the camp is no longer working. A motion was made by Br. Bruce Singley to replace the refrigeration unit for the cooler, seconded by Sr. Nancy Ritter. Motion passed with no objections. Scholarship: Br. Singley reported. The committee approved two renewal scholarships for Cecelia O Reilly and Colin Conrad. Generous donations were received in June from Br. Martin and Sr. Carol Eisenstein and Br. Scott and Sr. Carol Brandon. The Pancake Breakfast is scheduled for Labor Day weekend, Sunday, September 3, 2017, at 8:00AM. The Cottage Owners meeting will follow. 4

Cottage Owners: Sr. Beverly St. Thomas, excused from the meeting, sent in her report on the Fourth of July Picnic at the Camp. The Picnic was again a success. Br. Christopher and Sr. Lindsay Cortis set up the children s games. Seventy-five chicken dinners were sold, along with hamburgers, hot dogs, sausage, kolache, baked goods, beer, wine, pop. There were 137 adult and 22 teen paid admissions. Expenses were the same, profit down very little. Ethnic Festival: Sr. Kalivoda reported on the SignUpGenius volunteers but is still in need of several more to fill in the empty slots. Volunteers are also needed for decorating help Thursday and Friday, July 20-21. Br. Charles Bares noted that there are many antique stores in the Cedar Rapids Czech Village, and many mugs, beer steins, wooden plaques and brewery tablecloths were purchased by Sokol Detroit members, which will be sold at the Ethnic Festival. Endowment Fund: Br. Gorton Greene reminded everyone of the August 5 Sokol Detroit Golf Tournament at Fox Hills Country Club. Last year, there were 72 golfers and 13 additional people for the dinner. He is accepting sponsorships as well. Beach Party: Br. Brian Fair reported on the Sokol Camp Beach Party, scheduled for Saturday, August 12, at Noon. Grilling from 4:00-6:00PM. Bring a dish to pass, b.y.o.b., free hot dogs, brats and sliders. For more information, contact Br. Fair at b@foxborn.com. Sokol Fishing Derby: Br. Cortis reported on the Fishing Derby, August 26-28, at Sokol Camp. It will begin Noon Friday and end at Noon Sunday. The Huron River Water Shed recommends stocking Sandy Bottom Lake with redear blue gill fish, a natural predator of the zebra mussel. Br. Cortis and the Derby committee would like Sokol Detroit to help financially with this restocking. There was much discussion on this matter, and a suggestion was made that the Fishing Derby becomes a private event beginning this year. The Fishing Derby Committee members will discuss this matter and bring their recommendations to the membership at the August unit meeting. Czech Dinner Party: Sr. Greene brought up the Czech Dinner Party, which has always been held at the Center in early November. Since Sokol Greater Cleveland will not be bringing their members by bus this year, Sr. Greene is asking membership for suggestions on a replacement event. A Fifty Years of Traditions theme was discussed. Members are to bring other suggestions to the August meeting. Unfinished Business: The issue of the Center oven replacement was discussed at this time. Since the oven and burners do not work properly, a motion was made by Sr. Nancy Ritter to replace them, Br. Eric Singley seconded, and the motion passed. At the June meeting, Sr. Bares was given money to purchase plants and mulch for the center, but, since it has been too hot for planting, this will be completed next month. The Sokol Hayride is scheduled for Saturday, October 14, at Sokol Camp. New Business: Br. Fair reported that, at the August unit meeting, he will give a presentation to members suggesting that Sokol Detroit merchandise be sold on our website. He will discuss this with Srs. Sharon Stanek and Conrad. The American Sokol Organization Convention will be held in Cleveland, Ohio, April 2018. Sr. Greene reminded membership of the officers/committee members election in October. She would like all members to consider running for an office or continuing in her/his present position. Sr. Bares volunteered to replace the Camp dining hall curtains with valances. The June 2017 minutes were approved as submitted. Sr. Greene adjourned the meeting at 8:44PM. The next meeting will be held at 7:00PM on August 1, 2017, at Sokol Camp.
