2016 BYU FOOTBALL LAST GAME/OPPONENT OUTLOOK-3 BYU VS. PAC-12 Arizona...................................... 9-12-1 Arizona State................................... 7-20 California....................................... 3-1 Colorado..................................... 3-8-1 Oregon......................................... 3-3 Oregon State.................................... 5-6 Stanford........................................ 0-2 UCLA.......................................... 3-8 USC........................................... 0-2 Utah....................................... 31-55-4 Washington..................................... 4-5 Washington State................................. 3-1 ARIZONA SEASON PREVIEW In the mind of fifth-year Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez, football rules favor the offensive side of the ball. The reasoning is simple: the offense knows where it is going and when. Meanwhile, the defense can counter by moving all 11 of its players prior to the snap of the ball. Rodriguez is giving his defensive unit one more advantage to even things up in 2016: an entirely new coaching staff and, potentially, a brand new scheme to catch opponents off guard. After winning the New Mexico Bowl, which was the program s fourth-consecutive bowl trip for the first time in school history, Rodriguez was not satisfied with a 7-6 finish. He evaluated every aspect of the program from the top on down. His conclusion was changes needed to be made. The most significant change Rodriguez desired was a greater energy in the program. Not just from coaches or players, but everyone involved in the organization. He felt a better, more fun, more positive energy was needed to recruit at a higher level. The more public change came in January when he made the difficult decision to part ways with longtime friend and defensive coordinator Jeff Casteel. Also departing would be loyal staff members Bill Kirelawich, David Lockwood and Matt Caponi, who all helped the Wildcats win 33 games in the first four seasons of the Rodriguez era the most in a four-year span ever at Arizona. Rodriguez filled the coaching vacancies with a mix of familiar and unfamiliar faces. A careful search for the right fit at defensive coordinator did not center on scheme, but rather personality. That led him to Boise State defensive coordinator Marcel Yates, who also spent time at Texas A&M just a few seasons ago. Shifting into new roles within the program were Jahmile Addae, a veteran football analyst with the Wildcats who worked closely with Lockwood, and Vince Amey, also an analyst and righthand man to Kirelawich in 2015. The defensive staff was rounded out with Donte Williams, noted as a strong recruiter and defensive backs coach, who arrived from San Jose State. With the staff in place on both sides of the ball, Rodriguez charged his assistants with emphasizing fundamentals in all aspects of the game as a key focus during spring practices. The spring schedule itself was moved up a month to early February, allowing the changes to quickly settle in and for players to get comfortable. The earlier practice schedule then allowed the coaching staff to shift attention from practice scripts to recruiting plans, getting organized early and hitting the trail hard when evaluation periods opened up. From that standpoint, Arizona s early recruiting efforts have never been more successful. Now as the season nears, the focus squarely shifts to preparations for a challenging schedule, which begins with a neutral site Cactus Kickoff against BYU. Because Rodriguez and his defensive staff remained mum on scheme throughout the spring and summer, that Sept. 3 showdown will likely be the first unveiling of Arizona s new-look defense. If it s anything new at all. From that point forward, opponents will have a better idea of what to expect defensively from the Wildcats. But don t expect the Wildcats to look the same defensively each time out they ll seek to keep teams off balance the way Rodriguez s offense typically has. And as far as offense goes, that s where Rodriguez has always used the advantages to his benefit. Expect more of the same in 2016. ARIZONA PLAYERS TO WATCH (2015 STATS) #12 ANU SOLOMON QB 6-2 206 JR. 2016 BYU FOOTBALL TEAM NOTES-4 INDEPENDENCE: YEAR SIX The 12-game independent schedule features teams from eight different conferences and an independent team. Six games come against Power Five opponents, including teams from the Pac-12, Big 12, Big Ten and SEC. The schedule ranks No. 7 in Phil Steele s preseason schedule rankings. The opponents on the 2016 schedule posted a 97-57 record in 2015, with 10 bowl teams and an FCS playoff team. The Cougars host six home games and have four true road contests with two neutral site games, both at NFL stadiums, in 2016. The home schedule consists of UCLA, Toledo, Mississippi State, Southern Utah, UMass and Utah State. Teams on the home schedule put together a 44-31 record in 2015, with four reaching bowl games and Southern Utah earned an FCS playoff berth. Road contests include Utah, Michigan State, Boise State and Cincinnati with neutral site games against Arizona (University of Phoenix Stadium - home of the Arizona Cardinals) and West Virginia (FedEx Field - home of the Washington Redskins). All six games away from home are against 2015 bowl teams with a combined record of 53-16 last year. TEAM CAPTAINS BYU will have four captains for the 2016 season in senior quarterback Taysom Hill, senior running back Jamaal Williams, senior defensive back Kai Nacua and senior defensive lineman Harvey Langi. Hill is serving as a captain for the third time. BYU offensive coordinator Ty Detmer was also a three-time team captain (89, 90, 91). FLAG BEARERS BYU s tradition of carrying team flags out of the tunnel adds some new looks for 2016. A United States serviceman will carry an American flag for every game, with team flags carried by selected players and alumni flags carried by former BYU players for each game. LAVELL EDWARDS STADIUM LaVell Edwards Stadium with its 63,275-seat capacity is home to BYU football. Originally Cougar Stadium, it was built in 1964 and seated 30,000. It was expanded in 1982 to seat 65,000 permanent seats before official capacity became 63,275 after various refurbishments. For the 2012 season the stadium featured new video walls and LED ribbons on the north and south end zone stands. Stadium record: 231-69 (.770) 2015 stadium record: 6-0 (1.000) Since 2005: 56-11 (.836) MISSIONS Brigham Young University is owned and operated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The missionary emphasis of the Church is perhaps one of its most recognized characteristics. Since the organization of the Church in 1830, over one million missionaries have served. The Church operates missions around the world in 150 nations speaking more than 160 languages. Over 74,000 missionaries representing the Church are serving proselytizing missions in 418 missions around the world. Most of the Church s proselytizing missionaries are young men between the ages of 18 and 26. A substantial number of young women and older couples also serve proselytizing missions. Missionaries work long hours seven days a week for two years (or 18 months for women and couples) teaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ and participating in community service. The 2016 team has 84 players that served church missions and there are another 27 currently serving. Members of the team have served in over 25 countries and six of the seven continents around the globe. ALUMNI FIRESIDES Former members of the BYU football team will produce firesides, or devotionals at local LDS churches the night before select road games during the 2016 season (Note: no alumni fireside prior to Arizona game due to other events). Firesides are open to the public. Additional firesides may be announced. These devotionals are referred to as firesides and are intended to help those who attend strengthen or gain a knowledge of our purpose here on earth. Firesides typically include a musical number and talks from selected football alumni. Some of BYU s most celebrated and decorated players have come from the Pacific islands, including All-Americans, national record holders, players who have gone on to compete in the NFL and now, several members of BYU s current coaching and support staff. Kalani Sitake was named BYU s 14th head coach on Dec. 19, 2015, becoming the first Tongan head football coach in the NCAA. Sitake was raised in Laie, Hawaii and later moved to the mainland. His staff includes Polynesians Ilaisa Tuiaki, Steve Kaufusi, Reno Mahe, Nu u Tafisi, Russell Tialavea, Tevita Ofahengaue, Jack Damuni, Jasen Ah You, Sione Kinikini, Vince Feula and Harvey Unga. Not far off is quarterback Taysom Hill who already owns the BYU quarterback career rushing yard mark with 2,212, needing 1,243 rushing yards to share the honors with Unga and Williams potentially. Hill rushed for 1,344 in 2013. SPREADING THE BALL. BYU had five players with at least 500 receiving yards in 2015. Two of those five return in 2016 in Mitchell Juergens and Nick Kurtz. Colby Pearson also returns after earning over 200 receiving yards in 2015 and Moroni Laulu-Pututai with over 100.
