2 MORE ON THE MATCHUP RIDER vs. VERMONT All-Time Series: Vermont leads 2-0 Rider University is a private insitution located in Lawrenceville, N.J. Broncs play in the MAAC and their home court is Alumni Gym. UVM won the first meeting 80-56 in N.J. on 1/4/2004 and the second matchup 77-52 at Patrick Gym on 12/11/2004. SCOUTING RIDER Six straight losses to begin the season: vs. Bucknell, at Navy, vs. Holy Cross, at Lafayette, at Seton Hall and vs. East Carolina. Hailing from Brno, Czech Republic, senior guard Kamila Hoskova leads the team in scoring with 13.2 points per game and in rebounds with 5.7 per contest. New Jersey native and sophomore Stella Johnson is second on the team in scoring (10.7 PPG) and in rebounding (5.7 RPG). Freshman Jaiden Morris is the third of three Broncs to average doublefigures in scoring through the team s first six games of the season with 10.5 PPG. Last season, the Broncs went 24-9 (.727) overall and 16-4 (.800) in MAAC play. They finished 11-2 at home, 11-5 on the road and 2-2 at neutral sites. Dropped MAAC title game to Quinnipiac 81-73 at Times Union Center in Albany, N.Y. Lost in first round of WNIT 76-62 at Virginia Tech. Lynn Milligan is in her 11th season as head coach, her first head coaching gig. She is 111-201 overall as head coach. Last year was best season with 24-9 record (previous high in wins came in both 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons. Prior to becoming HC, was an assistant at Saint Joseph s for six seasons and Drexel for six. Went to Drexel after a season at Central Connecticut State. Two-star athlete as a student at Rider in basketball and softball. Rider alumna 92, G 94. NEWS AND NOTES ALL THE WRIGHT REASONS Junior Candice Wright continues to leave a mark on the record book. The native of Cambridge, Ontario has registered 102 blocks in her career and is tied for first all-time in program history with Katie McNamara (2000-05). Wright need just one blocked shot in order to become the sole leader in blocks for a career by a Catamount. As a freshman two years ago, Wright logged 50 blocks, setting a single-season program record in that category. Of the top-4 UVM shot blockers of all-time (not named Candice Wright), none had more than 46 through their sophomore campaign. It took Wright just one season to reach 50 blocks. Candice Wright is averaging 1.8 blocks per game through the first five games of the regular season. Only Catamount with multipled blocked shots this year. I D LIKE TO THANK THE ACADEMY Hanna Crymble scored 23 points in the JMU game en route to being named a member of the TD Bank Classic All- Tournament team. The sophomore forward won the America East Player of the Week award for the week ending on Nov. 19, 2017. On Friday, Nov. 17 vs. Howard, Crymble scored a career-high 37 points and tied a career-high with 13 rebounds for her second double-double this season (including St. Michael s game). In a Nov. 19 loss to Columbia, Crymble scored 18 points. However, 16 of those points came in the second half, but they were not enough to mount a Catamount comeback. Crymble is on pace to lead UVM in total points for a second consecutive season. Crymble recorded four double-doubles last season and was the first Catamount freshman to do so four times since Kylie Butler in 2013-14. THAT S HANDY! Lauren isn t the only Handy on the team anymore. Her younger sister, Carmen, is one of the four freshmen additions. They join the Wright twins as another Canadian sister duo on the Catamounts. Both sisters have played in each game of this young regular season for Vermont. LAST TIME OUT November 25 vs. JMU: The Catamounts have lost three consecutive home games and went 0-2 in the TD Bank Classic (which they hosted) following a 68-56 loss to JMU. The Catamounts carried a 36-34 lead into halftime but were outscored 18-6 in the third quarter and by two points in the fourth quarter. Kelly Koshuta led the Dukes off the bench with a career-high 26 points and six rebounds. Kamia Smalls scored 19 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and recorded 5 assists for JMU, while Burlington native Hailee Barron added 15 points of her own (with four 3PM). Hanna Crymble led UVM with 23 points en route to being named to the TD Bank Classic All- Tournament team. Meanwhile, Josie Larkins scored 12 points on 4-7 shooting from downtown in her first career start. MORE DEPTH IN 2017-18 With Sydney Smith back on the court, the Catamounts have instantly upgraded. The senior can score consistently. When healthy, Smith s numbers speak for themselves as she led the team with 12.1 points per game in 2016-17 before her season came to an abrupt ending due to a knee injury. Senior Katie Lavelle will see solid minutes at point guard with newcomer Kianna Funderburk backing her up. Coach Day feels good about what that duo can bring to the table. There will be competition at the shooting guard position between R-Senior Kristina White and freshman Josie Larkins. Sophomore Hanna Crymble is one of the more dynamic players on the roster. Her versatility continues to improve, as she posted a double-double in the Nov. 4 game against St. Michael s. Crymble should have a chance to be an All-Conference player in 2017-18 after a season in which she was selected to the conference s All-Rookie Team. After sitting out 2016-17, junior Cassidy Derda is cleared to play for the Catamounts. The South Burlington native could not play last season after playing for St. Francis Brooklyn. She has two years of eligibility remaining. There were some positives for the Catamounts last season despite a 9-20 record. UVM led the America East in FG% defense (36%) and finished second in 3-pt % defense (29.5%). Vermont was one of three America East teams (including Binghamton and Albany) to average more than 4 blocks per game. The team seeks to lower turnovers this season. That figure was at 18.4 per game last season. With a deeper lineup, this team aims to score at least 60 PPG this season. However, the biggest key to this season is to maintain a healthy roster, which was not the case last year.
