Michigan State s score was generated off the bench as non-starters Louis Stephens III and Kevin Reiman hooked up for the Spartans lone goal. Michigan State s record stands at 5-2-0 on the season. THIS WEEK- Michigan State will travel to Ohio to face Mid-American Conference foe Bowling Green. The Falcons (1-6-1) fell in their last outing, 4-1, to Wright State, on Sept. 17. BGSU s lone victory of the season came in a 2-1 overtime win against Western Illinois. On Sept. 24, MSU will welcome Wisconsin to Old College Field, hosting the Badgers in a Big Ten match-up. Wisconsin won its conference home-opener on Sept. 17, coming up with a 2-1 overtime win against Michigan. The Badgers (4-3-0) will play UW-Milwaukee on Wednesday, Sept. 20, before entering East Lansing. Wisconsin fi nished the 2005 season with an overall record of 8-11-0, 2-4-0 in Big Ten play and return all 11 starters from that squad. JOE BAUM TO BE INDUCTED IN ST. LOUIS HALL OF FAME Head coach Joe Baum will be inducted into the St. Louis Hall of Fame on Sept. 21. The Hall of Fame honors athletes, coaches and those in the soccer community from the St. Louis and Missouri area. Baum, who also was a talented goal keeper at MSU, leading the Spartans to two NCAA Co-Championships (1967, 68), will be recognized for his coaching accomplishments. TILLMAN TABBED BIG TEN PLAYER OF THE WEEK Senior goalkeeper Jason Tillman was tabbed Big Ten Player of the week after posting two shutouts at the Wolverine Invitational (Sept. 8 and 10). His four shutouts this season are a conference best, bringing his career total to 16. This is Tillman s third Big Ten Player of the Week accolade, collecting two in 2005. WEBSTER NAMED TO SOCCER AMERICA TEAM OF THE WEEK Junior Kenzo Webster was named to Soccer America s Team of the Week after netting all three goals in MSU s 1-0 decision over VCU and 2-0 win over Butler. Webster who scored two goals in 2005, has scored fi ve of MSU s seven goals this season, including three game-winners. The Spartans gained national attention after their 1-0 upset over No. 3 New Mexico on Sept. 1. The Spartans enter the 2006 season with an overall record of 451-238-71, capturing two NCAA Championships (1967, 1968) in eight NCAA Tournament appearances. MSU won its fi rst Big Ten crown in 2004. The program will celebrate the 50th anniversary the weekend of Sept. 30 Oct. 1 with several events aimed to refl ect on MSU soccer s history and bring as many families as possible back to East Lansing. Kenzo Webster tallied each of the Spartans three goals. Michigan State is 2-0 against ranked opponents this season, having defeated No. 3 New Mexico on Sept. 1. WEBSTER, TILLMAN EARN MVP HONORS Junior forward Kenzo Webster earned Offensive MVP honors at the Wolverine Invitational for his three-goal performance. Webster, who scored two goals in 2005, has scored fi ve of MSU s seven goals this season, including three game-winners. Senior goalie Jason Tillman was named the Defensive MVP, posting a total of eight saves in two shutouts over the weekend. Tillman has recorded four shutouts this season and 16 in his career. MSU FALLS IN DOUBLE OT TO NORTHERN ILLINOIS With 15 seconds remaining in the second overtime period, Marcus Mc- Carty tapped in the game-winning goal for Northern Illinois as the Huskies edged past MSU, 1-0, on Sept. 3 at the MSU/Radisson Fall Classic. SPARTANS STUN NO. 3 NEW MEXICO Spartan junior Kenzo Webster scored the winning goal in Michigan State s 1-0 upset against No. 3 New Mexico at the MSU/Radisson Fall Classic on Sept. 1. The win over the Lobos, ranked third in the National Soccer Coaches Association preseason poll and the 2005 national runners-up, gave the Spartans their biggest upset since beating Indiana, the reigning national champion, 2-1, in the semifi nals of the Big Ten Tournament in 2004. Kenzo Webster tallied the winning goal. WORKING OVERTIME Three of Michigan State s contests have gone into overtime this year. MSU kicked off the 2006 season with two overtime wins at the Oregon State/Diadora Classic, Aug. 25-26. The Spartans defeated Sacramento State 1-0 in overtime and toppled UC Riverside 2-1 in two extra periods of play. The Green and White fell to Northern Illinois, 1-0, in double overtime at the MSU/Radisson Fall Classic on Sept. 3. ZAC ATTACK Sophomore Zac Scaffi di led the Spartan offense at the OSU/Diadora Classic (Aug. 25-26) with a goal and an assist. Scaffi di scored the game-winner in MSU s 1-0 OT win over Sacramento State, in the 97th minute. It was just Scaffi di s second goal of his career and his fi rst-ever game-winner. In MSU s 2-1 double OT win over UC Riverside, Scaffi di notched an assist on the Spartans fi rst strike, lacing a feed to Kenzo Webster. Scaffi di paced the offense at the classic with eight shots, fi ve of those on goal. A LOOK AT THE SPARTANS The Spartans return 15 letterwinners and seven starters from their 2005 campaign, fi nishing the season with an 8-6-5 record.
