Barbados, Bonaire reach CAZOVA final BARBADOS and Bonaire reached the final of the CAZOVA (Caribbean Zonal Volleyball Association) Youth Girls Championships in Curacao tonight. In the second semifinal, Bonaire defeated hosts Curacao in a battle of two first-time participants in this under-18 tournament 25-16, 25-22, 21-25, 25-16. It was a revenge triumph as the players from Bonaire had lost the last six points when they were two points from victory at 13-9 in the deciding set in their round-robin clash two days earlier. It was Bonaire s turn to get out of jail this time as they won seven straight points from 20-12 down and the last six from 22-19 down to go up 2-0. However Curacao kept on fighting and when they trailed 15-11 and seemed certain to go down in straight sets, they took 14 of the last 20 points to force the fourth. Bonaire s captain Jahena Angela was the game s leading scorer with 18 points, while compatriot Daniela Drullard chipped in with 11, the same amount as Curacao s second leading scorer Conradus. Dangela Maduro scored 16 points for the hosts, but injured her ankle late in the third period and could not take the floor for the fourth. Bonaire had the edge (24-22) in kills, blocked shots (3-2) and service winners (14-11) in the 110-minute contest. The 54-minute defeat meant that T&T, who had kept the Bajans on court for 67 minutes in the first match of the tournament two days earlier, were dethroned after being crowned champions in all three previous editions of the tournament. Barbados captain Ashley Jordan scored a game-high 18 points, six more than teammate Aaliyah Durant, who was the only other player in the match to reach double figures. The Barbadians completely dominated every category 24-9 in kills, 12-5 in service winners and 9-3 in blocked shots. They will oppose Bonaire for the gold medal at 6 p.m. tomorrow, two days after beating them in straight sets in the round-robin phase. Curacao and T&T will square off for the bronze two hours earlier. T&T prevailed when they met on Friday, but the match lasted 131 minutes and went the distance.
