Barbados strike CAZOVA gold BARBADOS expectedly captured the gold medal and defending champions Trinidad and Tobago notched bronze when the curtain came down on the CAZOVA (Caribbean Zonal Volleyball Association) Youth Girls Championships in Curacao tonight. Barbados whipped Bonaire, first-timers to the under-18 competition, 25-14, 25-8, 25-22 to end the tournament with the distinction of not dropping a set from any of their five matches. Their potent attacking pair of skipper Ashley Jordan and Aaliyah Durant stepped up again to lead them home with 19 and ten points, respectively. Captain Jahena Angela, who had scored a tournament-high 32 points when Bonaire defeated T&T in the round-robin stage on Friday night, led the way for her team again with eight points. Barbados crushed their opponents 22-8 on kills and 21-7 on service winners, but only had a marginal (5-3) edge on blocked shots in the contest, which just went past the hour-mark. Earlier T&T defeated a depleted Curacao outfit (three key players were missing because of injury) 25-19, 20-25, 25-14, 25-14 in 101 minutes for third place in the four-team competition. T&T had also prevailed when they met in the round-robin phase on Friday, but they had been forced to five sets and were kept on court half-hour longer. As usual, Nicolette De Mille led from the front as the T&T skipper had an impressive 13 kills in her game-high 17 points. Tsyan Selvon, who had not scored in double figures in any of the other four matches, chipped in with 15, three more than Curacao s captain Anals Conradus.
