RHP SHANE LOUX (3-1, 4.21) TODAY S GAME: The Redbirds continue a four-game series with the Fresno Grizzlies (Triple-A Giants) this afternoon at AutoZone Park. It is the second of four scheduled meetings between the teams in 2013. Fresno leads the season series, 1-0, and won the 2012 series, 3-1. Memphis holds a slim 40-38 advantage in the all-time series since 1998. This afternoon s matinee will be broadcast live on Sports 56, 87.7 FM and internet webcast available at www.memphisredbirds.com. Steve Selby and John Pappadopolous is on the call. GAST PROMOTED TO ST. LOUIS: Starting pitcher John Gast will have his contract purchased by the St. Louis Cardinals and make his Major League debut in a Tuesday start against the Mets. To make room for Gast, the Cardinals added pitcher Jason Motte to the 60-day disabled list and Jake Westbrook to the 15-day disabled list with right elbow infl ammation. Gast was recently awarded as the Cardinals Minor League Pitcher of the Month award for April and set a Redbirds franchise singleseason record with 32.0 consecutive shutout innings to open the season, the longest streak of any pitcher in the majors or minors. He leads the PCL with a 1.16 ERA, ranks 4th in WHIP (1.06), and 5th in fewest baserunners per 9 innings (10.24). JOHNSON TO DISABLED LIST, ALBITZ REJOINS REDBIRDS: Catcher Rob Johnson was placed on the disabled list today after being struck in the head by the backswing of Sacramento s Andy Parrino two days ago. To replace Johnson on the Memphis roster, infi elder Vance Albitz rejoins the club from Double- A Springfi eld. Albitz hit.325 (13-for-40) with two doubles and fi ve RBIs in 15 games for Springfi eld, and threw three scoreless innings in yesterday s 20-inning 2-1 loss to Northwest Arkansas. DAY BASEBALL: The Redbirds are 7-2 in day games this season, including a 3-1 mark at home. Outfi elder Justin Christian is hitting.323 (10-for-31) in nine day games against a.213 (17-for-80) average in 25 contests at night. HAPPY MOTHER S DAY: The Redbirds are a lifetime 8-8 on Mother s Day since 1998 (4-2 at home). WE RE GOING STREAKING! Three Redbirds are currently enjoying their longest hitting streaks of the season. Greg Garcia is hitting.636 (7-for-11) over fi ve straight, Adron Chambers is batting.400 (12-for-30) over seven consecutive games, and Ryan Jackson is batting.409 (9-for-22) over his last fi ve games. GETTING PINCHED: Redbirds hitters are 4-for-21 (.190) this season in pinch hit opportunities. WHOLE LOTTA GLOVE: The Redbirds lead the PCL with a.985 fi elding percentage and have committed a PCL-low 20 errors. Kolten Wong co-leads the PCL with a 1.000 fi elding percentage and has a league-leading 100 assists in 159 total chances. OSCAR WATCH: St. Louis top prospect Oscar Taveras is starting to heat up, hitting safely in 13 of his last 17 contests at a.348 clip (24-for-69). He is batting.414 (12-for-29) over his last six games and now co-leads the club with Jamie Romak 20 RBIs thanks to eight in his last six games. His four-hit performance on Friday night was his third of the season (Ryan Jackson led with fi ve, three-hit performances in 2012). GETTING THE BUNT DOWN: The Redbirds lead the PCL with 18 sacrifi ces; Ryan Jackson shares the PCL lead with four. GETTING STARTED: Redbirds starting pitchers are 14-6 with a 2.90 ERA (63er/195.0ip), 150 strikeouts, and 14 quality starts through the first 35 outings. John Gast (1.16) and Michael Wacha (1.99) have the 1st and 4th-best ERAs in the league. CLOSE CALLS: Twenty of Memphis 35 games (57%) have been decided by three runs or less (9-11 record). THE WONG SHOW: St. Louis #5 prospect Kolten Wong leads the Redbirds with 41 hits, 13 multiple-hit performances, and four hitting streaks of fi ve games or more. He also ranks tied for 3rd in the PCL with four triples and 6th in at-bats (140). GRIZZLIES TIES: Justin Christian spent the 2011-12 seasons with Fresno in the San Francisco Giants organization, batting.340 (184-for-540) with 17 home runs, 76 RBIs, and 48 stolen bases in 136 games. Before his recall by the Giants last season, Christian was leading the PCL with 91 hits. He will be awarded his 2012 World Series Championship ring in a pre-game ceremony on the fi eld today by the Grizzlies. THIS DAY IN REDBIRDS HISTORY: In 2004, third baseman John Mabry hit his second home run of the game with a gametying shot out in the bottom of the 9th. Left fi elder John Gall hit the fi rst pitch he saw in the bottom of the 11th over the fence for a walk-off home run for a 4-3 Redbirds win over Portland.
