Nyungwe owes its biodiversity in part to the mountainous backbone that follows the great African Rift, creating a cool, verdant refuge for creatures great and small. The next two mornings take you deep into the forest (on foot) in search of foraging chimp families. Chimpanzee brain size (massive relative to body mass) creates a voracious appetite that keeps them on the move chasing calories. But when you find them, the thrill of connection is unforgettable. And the scouting is pure adventure, following telltale hoots and screeches through an almost fairytale landscape of misty montane forest dotted with waterfalls. Afternoons are open for hiking, birding, or canopy walks that give you a chimps -eye view of a habitat with 13 species of primate. The park has some 300 species of birds, including the rare Rewenzori turaco, abundant here, and the great blue turaco, giant hornbill and red-breasted sparrow hawk.
