Dave Aftermarket Air Conditioning (Judging Chairman Notes) Dave Houlihan I alluded, during last month s meeting, that Spring Restorer would reflect changes re judging addition of aftermarket air conditioning. Well, spring (Restorer) has arrived and David Brigham, our National Judging Chairman, has detailed changes to our judging procedure. I ve previously judged a couple Corvettes with added aftermarket AC. Treating this mod as if were an added luggage rack. That is, Standard Deduction #14 GM Approved Dealer-Installed Accessories. Basically, ignore item and assess scoring deduction relative to extent accessory altered affixed component or subassembly. APPROACH USED EVEN THOUGH AFTERMARKET AC WAS NOT GM APPROVED ITEM. NCRS had no specific guidance on judging aftermarket AC. Responses to aftermarket AC questions on our NCRS Technical Discussion Board proffered widely differing scoring results. Actual Flight judging had some owners with relatively minor deduction for firewall damage, generator relocation, etc. While other owners incurred major point deductions. Spring Restore article sets forth additional guidance on scoring both post-production addition of Regular Production Option (RPO) and addition of aftermarket option air conditioning. Short answer is minimum 200 point deduction on C1, and minimum 300 point deduction on C2 & C3. Note as always: The detectable addition OR deletion of a regular production vehicle option subsequent to factory assembly is inconsistent with NCRS Judging Standards and therefore subject to a full deduction on originality and condition. Examples: power top, windshield washers, power windows, power steering, power brakes, side-mounted exhaust. New: Additionally, the addition of an aftermarket item, component, or assembly, will necessitate a full deduction on operations, originality and condition for each and every line item affected by that owner-inspired (or dealer-inspired) addition/change. Example: aftermarket air conditioning. Not related to air conditioning, but also added was: Deduct 40% of Originality - 1967 Big- Block hood stinger and associated pin-stripe are proper color. However, the placement of the stinger paint or pin stripe are atypical, or the width of the pin stripe is atypical. Expect to see a new Judging Reference Manual Standard Deduction Guidelines sheets soon. Note, last month I said expect changes to be effective after Las Vegas National. Changes are in effect now. I m working on a Judging School/Exercise so we can work a trial scoring re aftermarket AC. Dave Midway USA Tune Up Page 4

Meeting Minutes - Midway USA Chapter of NCRS, Inc. Minutes Prepared By Chapter Secretary Jim Coote The March 2018 monthly meeting was held on the 3rd, and called to order at 9:03 A.M. by our chapter Chairman, Rick Smiley. There were 17 in attendance. Old Business: Rick opened the meeting by thanking all (I think he meant all) for coming and especially called attention to Stanley Schield driving all the way from Montezuma. That s in Kansas, way out West, 2 hours and 58 minutes, driving the speed limit! Phil, I think if you or I lived that far away, Rick would welcome us too, but I have no credible evidence to support that supposition. Rick reminded us why we were meeting a week earlier than usual by stating that several of us would be in the Kansas City area attending a session with Al Grenning. Al will share with attendees some of his research findings on stamp pads, tags and documentation. Rick indicated that there might be a few seats available if anyone is interested, but they better hurry as they are close to full. There was some talk about car pooling, but that would be worked out later. Richard York, who last month was looking for a ride, said he got a better deal which was free overnight accommodations with a relative in Topeka. Since he has not been our treasurer for a few years now, he seems to be trying to cut down on his expenses. But, maybe there is no connection. It just seems odd to me! My notes don t reveal who brought up the subject of participating in a caravan to the Corvette Museum to celebrate its 25 th anniversary in 2019. Knowing how the Houlihans travel throughout the United States, often apparently on a whim, I m guessing that Dave brought up this topic. I suspect that he would enjoy traveling there with some of his fellow Corvette fanatics. Any takers? Dallas changed the conversation to money as requested by Rick and informed us that we had $1,939.29 in the checking account after some deposits and reimbursements for Flight Judging ribbons. Once again, Casey Coats has stepped up and donated $200 for the upcoming June car show expenses. He s been doing that for a few years now. We need more members in the oil business. Dale Green, our Judging Chairman, mentioned that the National organization has not been contacting some members about their membership expiring. The point was, we should take responsibility for renewing our membership before it expires. Point taken Dale! New Business: Rick reminded us that our next meeting, April 14 th, would be a Judging Event preceded by a Judging School. The Saturday after, April the 21 st, Tulsa is having a Judging Event. He mentions that because some of our High Level judges like to participate in Tulsa s events. (Continued on page 8) Midway USA Tune Up Page 7

Meeting Minutes - Midway USA Chapter of NCRS, Inc. Minutes Prepared By Chapter Secretary Jim Coote (Continued from page 7) This topic brought up discussion about the possible need to move our Judging Event to May since we still do not have a car signed up for judging. Dave Dennis is hoping to have his car finished and ready for judging in May and that possibility encouraged us to move our event to May 12 th, our regular meeting date. It s a done deal. Suspect that we will still have a Judging School at our April session. Dave Houlihan, U.S. traveler, Vice President and Co-Judging Chairman, thanked Stan from Montezuma for sending him pictures of his 1969 Corvette with side pipes. After Dave s judging session last month on side pipes of C-2s, Stan hurried home to inspect his 69 and sent Dave several pictures. Dave appreciated Stan s input as he was not able to find much info on the internet. Watch for a follow up on C-3 side pipes soon, or at least in the coming months. Dave commented on a thread he found on the NCRS discussion forum concerning the punishment, I mean points deducted, of adding power steering or Vintage Air. Pretty soon I won t worry about the deduction for my paint job. I might end up with a record amount of deductions requiring a different color ribbon! Co Judging chairs, Bev Smiley and Dave Houlihan, along with Rick, briefly discussed the need, or should I say, requirement, for those who are interested in Judging or OJ-ing at one of our Judging Events, to register on line through the NCRS web-site. That is a must. Joe Elliott, you need to talk to Dave to see if he can register you for these events. Bev also stressed the logic for being an Observing Judge for those who are uncomfortable doing the judging. Observing is a good way to learn what is involved and how to go about the process. The other need for all of us is to study the manual for the car to be judged before the event so the process doesn t take all morning. Portions of the judging manual can be produced ahead of the event for our use. And of course, the more we learn, the quicker the judging will go and the more fair it will be to the owner of the vehicle. We were reminded that our All Corvette Car Show is about three months away. In other words, it s not too early to sell your favorite eating establishment on the idea of supporting our drive for door prizes. We discussed a rain date for the June 9 th event which ended up as the week after, the 16 th. The show will start at 11:00 AM and will go to 3:00 PM. As usual, Davis-Moore sales people will pick the winners of the show. Kerri Keller reviewed what has been happening on coming up with a supplier for our club s banners. The Kellers have re-shopped the new sizes that they introduced last month and found a significant reduction to all sizes. The smallest one is now $8.00 for 10 x20, not $25; 13-1/4 x23-1/2 will cost $11.00; and a 2 x5 will set you back $45 bucks. Hope I got those dimensions correct. If not, they are close! And then, the meeting was closed unceremoniously at 9:55 AM so that Dave, the co-judging Chairman, could show us an outstanding video. You should have been here if you weren t! Did You Know Answers (from page 5): The 1972 Corvette was the last to feature (1) both front and rear chrome bumpers, (2) a bright egg-crate grill, (3) side-fender grills (later models do have functional vents and some have vent trim). Also, the 1972 model was the last to feature the (4) removable rear window, a feature unique to 1968 through 1972 models. Midway USA Tune Up Page 8
