... RADFORD WOMEN S BASKETBALL BY THE NUMBERS 10 Ten underclassmen were set to don the Red and White in 2015-16, which tied RU with High Point for the youngest roster in the Big South. 20 Senior guard Gaby Gilmore has recorded back-to-back 20-point performances for the first time in her career. 15 The Highlanders have outrebounded 15 of their 17 opponents this season. TEAM NOTES SETTING THE STAGE Currently in a five-way tie for first place in the Big South women s basketball standings, Radford takes its five-game winning streak to Boiling Springs, N.C. where it will face Gardner-Webb in Saturday s conference clash inside Paul Porter Arena. Ironically, the Runnin Bulldogs are one of the teams tied with RU for first place in the league. Liberty, Presbyterian and UNC Asheville round out the quintet that has a 6-2 conference ledger. GWU is also tied with the Highlanders for the longest winning streak in the Big South at five in a row. Series: Radford leads, 10-8 Location: Paul Porter Arena (Boiling Springs, N.C.) Time: 2 p.m. LAST MEETING Behind a barrage of 3-pointers, which included 18 straight points during one stretch in the first half, seventh-seeded Gardner-Webb was able to upset second-seeded Radford in the quarterfinals of the 2015 VisitMyrtleBeach.com Big South Women s Basketball Championship. Once ahead by 22 points, the Runnin Bulldogs had to hold off a furious RU rally by sealing the game at the free-throw line. GWU hit its first six attempts from long range en route to a 33-19 halftime advantage. In all, the Runnin Bulldogs earned 50 of their 70 points from beyond the arc and at the charity stripe. Senior forward Jessica Heilig led three players in double figures for the victors with 18 points. Candace Brown chalked up 14, while Olivia Parker contributed a double-double (11 points, 11 rebounds). Aisha Foy spearheaded the Highlanders offense with 13 points. SCOUTING GARDNER-WEBB Record: 12-6, 6-2 Big South Like Radford, the Runnin Bulldogs have been on a tear as of late. Since suffering its lone setback at home in conference play to Coastal Carolina, Gardner-Webb has reeled off five straight victories three by double digits. Its 25-point triumph over Longwood marked the second time GWU has won by at least 25 points during the win streak. The quartet of Olivia Parker, Candace Brown, Alexus Hill and Tierra Huntsman account for 78 percent of the Runnin Bulldogs scoring. All four average double figures, led by Parker s 14.4 points per game. The senior forward from Charlotte, N.C. also leads Gardner-Webb in the rebounding department with 9.2 boards per game, which lead the Big South. Brown is the reigning Big South Player of the Week after leading the Runnin Bulldogs last Saturday to a 58-56 win at UNC Asheville, who entered the game in sole possession of first place in the conference standings. Huntsman is Gardner-Webb s top threat from downtown, connecting on 35 percent of her attempts from 3-point range. Her 28 3-pointers made are nearly triple the number of the next closest for the Runnin Bulldogs. Even though the Highlanders are the top rebounding team in the league, they will have to make sure they limit Gardner-Webb s second-chance opportunities. The Runnin Bulldogs rank second in the league in offensive rebounds per game (15.7). RADFORD ROUNDUP Record: 10-7, 6-2 Big South One of the hottest teams in the Big South, Radford is off to its best start in conference play since the 2010-11 season when the Highlanders opened with a 7-1 record. During RU s recent surge, senior guard Gaby Gilmore has been sensational. The Morristown, Tenn., native has scored in double figures in each of the Highlanders last five games. She has topped the 20-point plateau in her last two games, which has propelled Gilmore to average double-figure scoring (10.4) for the first time in her career. Despite its 2-6 record on the road, Radford has won its last two contests away from the Dedmon Center. On the flip side, Gardner-Webb is 8-2 at home, including a 3-1 mark in league play. Aisha Foy leads the Highlanders in the scoring column, averaging 13.7 points per game, which rank sixth among Big South players. The Virginia Beach, Va., native is heating up from 3-point land. Her 38.9 percent accuracy from 3-point range is tops in the conference.... Janayla White joins Foy in double-figure scoring at 11.3 points per game. Despite missing the last two games, White has recorded two straight double-doubles to bring her season total to four, which tie for third-most in the league. She reeled in a career-high 18 rebounds against Campbell, marking her second straight game of pulling down at least 15 rebounds. Her 9.1 rebounds per game are the second-most by any Big South player. Radford continues to be a force on the glass, ranking first in rebounds per game (42.8) and rebounding margin (+9.5). ADIÓS AYANA Radford will struggle to fill the void left by 2015 graduate Ayana Avery, who ranks 10th all-time in RU career scoring (1,198). Avery set the single-season (95) and career (261) records for 3-pointers made at Radford. Her 261 made 3-pointers rank fourth all-time in Big South history. She is the 21st member of the 1,000-point club in Radford women s basketball history. The Highlanders led the Big South in 3-point field goal percentage (.337) last season. ROSTER BREAKDOWN RU s 2015-16 roster features 13 players representing nine states and two countries. There are three players from Virginia and two from Ohio. Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Illinois and West Virginia have one player apiece, while Spain is represented on the international scale by Claudia Quevedo. Radford has two seniors, one redshirt junior, five sophomores and five freshmen. The Highlanders boast five players six feet or taller. CRUNCH TIME RU has played in 10 games over the last two seasons that were decided by three points or less. The Highlanders have posted an 8-2 mark in those games. Under head coach Mike McGuire, Radford is 11-6 in games decided by five points or less. #RADFORDRISING

... RADFORD WOMEN S BASKETBALL WHAT A TURNAROUND Radford tied for the sixth-best win improvement from the 2013-14 season to the 2014-15 season. After the Highlanders only won seven games in 2013-14, RU exploded for 17 in 2014-15 (a 10-win improvement). Radford s 10-win improvement only trailed Ohio (18), East Tennessee State (12), Southern Illinois (12), Kennesaw State (11) and UC Riverside (11). TRIO OUT FOR 15-16 Sophomores Brittany Allen and Claudia Quevedo suffered season-ending injuries during Radford s preseason scrimmage against Furman. Both guards tore their ACL and will seek a medical redshirt for the 2015-16 season. Allen and Quevedo played in 29 and 30 games, respectively, as freshmen. Freshman point guard Jen Falconer tore her ACL in the Dec. 18 game at Wofford. She will miss the rest of the season and receive a medical redshirt. NOT IN OUR HOUSE Radford racked up a season-high 10 blocks against Youngstown State, which were the most by the Highlanders since they tallied 11 on Jan. 24, 2015 vs. High Point. YSU had not been blocked that many times since West Virginia swatted 12 on Nov. 11, 2011. The last time YSU was blocked at least 10 times at home was against Detroit on Jan. 13, 2007. The Highlanders tied that 10-block mark at Presbyterian on Jan. 4. RU ranks first in the Big South in blocks (5.2 bpg). DEFENDING DEDMON Radford had its 13-game winning streak inside the Dedmon Center snapped against Liberty on Jan. 2. RU won its final eight games at home last season and the first five games of the 2015-16 season. The Highlanders are 8-1 at home this season. DISHING OUT DIMES Radford ranks second in the Big South in assists per game (12.9). The Highlanders have recorded at least 15 assists in seven games this season, twice topping the 20-assist mark. QUEENS OF THE REBOUND With the depth and athleticism of Radford s post players, the Highlanders rank first in the Big South in rebounding margin (+9.5). RU holds its opponents to 33.3 rebounds per game, which rank first in the conference. Through the Highlanders first 17 games, they have only been outrebounded twice (at NC State, at Virginia Tech). RU has recorded seven games with a double-digit rebounding margin, including the last four outings. TURNING UP THE DEFENSE RU held three straight opponents (Virginia Tech, Coastal Carolina and Liberty) all below 50 points. The last time the Highlanders held three straight opponents below 50 points was the 2006-07 season. 01/04/07 Radford 90, Lees-McRae 37 01/09/07 Radford 72, Winston-Salem State 48 01/11/07 Radford 61, Longwood 47 HOME COOKING Beginning with their Jan. 9 game vs. Winthrop, the Highlanders will be at home for five of their next seven contests. CLOSING IN ON 1,000 Senior point guard Aisha Foy has her sights set on becoming the 22nd member of the 1,000-point club in Radford women s basketball history. She enters tonight s game with 883 career points. Her 13.7 ppg as a senior is the best season average in her four seasons as a Highlander. YOUNG GABS Her nickname may be Young Gabs, but guard Gaby Gilmore is playing very much like a senior veteran. On the strength of her second straight 20-point performance, Gilmore is now averaging double-figure scoring for the first time in her career. She has reached double-figure scoring in five straight games. UP NEXT Radford will seek revenge for its first Big South loss of the season when High Point visits the Dedmon Center for Tuesday s 7 p.m. tipoff. RADFORD WOMEN S BASKETBALL MIKE MCGUIRE Head Coach :: Third Season at Radford @coachmcguire @mamcguire77 Radford University officials introduced Mike McGuire on Wednesday, April 24, 2013 as the Highlanders seventh NCAA head women s basketball coach in program history. Widely recognized as one of the up-and-coming head coaches in the country, McGuire has quickly laid a solid foundation for the program moving forward. In just his second season at the helm (2014-15), McGuire guided the Highlanders to their third WNIT in school history. Radford, which finished with a 17-14 overall record, including a 14-6 Big South ledger, finished tied for second in the Big South regular-season standings. It was the Highlanders highest finish in the conference standings since 2010-11. McGuire s work did not go unnoticed as the conference s 11 head coaches selected him Big South Coach of the Year, marking the sixth head coach in program history to earn the accolade. The Highlanders 10-win improvement from the 2013-14 season to the 2014-15 season was tied for the sixth-best turnaround in the nation. In addition to his coaching responsibilities, McGuire is the Big South Conference Captain, a role he will serve until 2018. He is also the women s basketball head coach representative from the Big South Conference on the NCAA Regional Advisory Committee, which is a three-year commitment.
