Yeiper Castillo takes the ball for the Travs in his Dickey-Stephens Park debut on Sunday. He earned a 3-1 victory over Frisco on Monday in the second game of a doubleheader. Texas Rangers lefty Matt Harrison makes his second appearance against the Travs while rehabbing three surgeries (2 on back, 1 on left shoulder) from last year. One Run Sepa All 3 games of the series vs. the Midland RockHounds were decided by 1 run. The Travs earned their 3rd straight series win taking the first 2 games; 3-2 on Thursday and 2-1 on Friday. The RockHounds salvaged the last game on Saturday 3-2 over the Travs. During the Travs season-opening 6-game road trip zero games were decided by 1 run. Who Needs A Homer? The Travelers only have 2 home runs this year, the fewest hit in the Texas League over 8 games. Their last home run was hit by Kaleb Cowart in the 8th inning on Opening Night last Thursday in Midland, a span of 8 games and 244 at-bats. Streaks End Two impressive team streaks came to an end during Saturday s 3-2 loss to the RockHounds. Shawn O Malley s throwing error in the 8th inning ended a 64-inning stretch of perfection in the field. Kevin Johnson also allowed the first earned run by the Travs bullpen for the season, which also ended a 24.1 inning scoreless streak by Travs relievers. Run Rabbits Run Currently the Travs lead all of Minor League Baseball with 21 stolen bases and have 8 players with at least 1 steal.. Already this season the Travs have two games with 7 stolen bases including Thursday s 2-1 victory. The Travs hadn t stolen 7 bases in a game since pilfering 8 bases on April 16, 2011 in a 10-2 win over Midland in Little Rock. Twenty O Plenty In Thursday s historic 20-7 pummeling of the Midland RockHounds, the Travs scored 20 runs in a game for the second time during the affiliation with the Los Angeles Angels. Both 20-run outputs occurred against the RockHounds, the last time on August 16, 2003 at Ray Winder Field in Little Rock. In that game, the Travs opened a doubleheader with a 21-0 beating of Midland, which remains the largest margin of victory in a shutout in Texas League history. Career Night Opener Third baseman Kaleb Cowart opened the season with the best game of his career Thursday with 5 base hits and 5 RBIs. Previously Cowart had 4 hits in a game on 9 occasions including 1 game last year with the Travs. The 5 RBIs ties a career high set in 2012 while playing for Cedar Rapids Lucky Fourteen The Arkansas Travelers began their 14th season as an affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday. The club s 73-66 regular season record was its best since 1998. During the affiliation with the Angels, the Travs hold a record of 863-1061 (.449 pct) and own two Texas League titles (2001, 2008). The 2014 season is the last on a two-year player development contract signed in September 2012. The Travs posted a 2363-2393 record in 35 years as a St. Louis Cardinals affiliate from 1966-2000. Wellman Leads Travs A veteran of 28 seasons in professional baseball, new Travs manager Phillip Wellman is back in a familiar role as manager where he owns a 862-939 record in 15 minor league seasons, including eight years as a manager in the Southern League with the Mississippi Braves (2007-2010) and Chattanooga Lookouts (1999, 2001-2003). Most recently Wellman was the hitting coach for the Springfield Cardinals from 2011 through 2013 and tutored Texas League Players of the Year (Matt Adams - 2011 and Oscar Taveras - 2012). Wellman, a native of Bulverde, Texas, managed the M-Braves to the 2008 Southern League Championship. Wellman went into coaching in 1988 with the Atlanta Braves organization after the end of a four-year playing career as an outfielder and infielder in the minor leagues. He took his first managerial post in 1992 with the Gulf Coast Orioles and managed four years in Rookie-level affiliated baseball. His first full-season managing job came with Winston-Salem in 1996 in the Carolina League beginning his eight-year stint in the Cincinnati Reds farm system.
