ARTISTIC DIRECTOR JANEK SCHERGEN FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 8 June 2015 Singapore Dance Theatre presents Masterpiece in Motion 2015 21 & 22 August 2015 Esplanade Theatre World Premiere of Midnight Waltzes by François Klaus Company Premiere of Bournonville Divertissement by August Bournonville Opus 25 by Edwaard Liang, created for SDT 2 25 th Anniversary Singapore Dance Theatre s (SDT) will be presenting two brand new ballets and the specially commissioned 25 th Anniversary work at Masterpiece in Motion, its international repertory season. Happening from 21 & 22 August 2015, this season will be held at the Esplanade Theatre. Be captivated by a visual spectacle of exquisite contemporary works, as SDT presents a triple-bill, featuring three works of international standards. In its sixth season, Masterpiece in Motion continues to bring in world-class ballets like the world premiere of Midnight Waltzes by François Klaus, as well as the company premiere of Bournonville Divertissement by legendary choreographer August Bournonville, staged by Dinna Bjorn. We will also showcase one of our existing repertoire, Opus 25 by Edwaard Liang, which was first created for SDT s 25 th Anniversary Gala in 2013, and garnered much audience appreciation at Ballet Under the Stars last year. The purpose of SDT s international repertory season, Masterpiece in Motion (MIM), is to bring in the most interesting ballets that are choreographed by well-regarded choreographers, with whom we can associate ourselves with. In the past six years, we have brought to stage works by Edwaard Liang, David Dawson, Nils Christe, Natalie Weir, Adrian Bunnett, François Klaus, Val Caniparoli, George Balanchine, and August Bournonville. Overall, Masterpiece in Motion is quite a world view in terms of distinction in the choreographic voices, says Artistic Director Janek Schergen. The absolute essence of what SDT represents is found in the company premieres we bring in, as well as the works that are especially made for us. The most important element for building and strengthening our repertoire is getting the right balance so that both classical and contemporary repertoires can exist in harmony. At MIM, our audiences will be able to witness the growth and development of SDT. Through the repertory presented, one will be able to experience how the beauty and aristocratic nature of sophisticated choreography can bring out so much from our uniquely talented dancers.

Bournonville Divertissements (Company Premiere) Choreography August Bournonville Music Folktale Niels W. Gade La Ventana H.C. Lumbye & V.C. Holm Flower Festival Edvard Helsted & H.S. Paulli Napoli Edvard Helsted & H.S. Paulli August Bournonville (1805-1879) was the greatest choreographer of his generation. The Royal Danish Ballet has been the home of his choreographic works since his period with them as chief choreographer and Director. Bournonville ballets are represented in every major ballet company in the world and considered to be amongst the purest form of ballet that has ever been established. This set of divertissements has been drawn from four ballets including A Folk Tale, La Ventana, Flower Festival in Genzano and Napoli. Each selection, taken from a full-length ballet, was chosen and combined to compliment the surrounding elements of choreography. They have been connected seamlessly together to form this set of charming and delightful divertissements. Midnight Waltzes (World Premiere) Choreography François Klaus Music Johann Strauss & Khachaturian, Aram Il'yich We are in Russia, little more than a century ago and it is time for a long-anticipated ball. The dance master calls on one of his pupils, Henrietta, to give some last-minute instruction, but Henrietta is only determined to win the heart of handsome André. Romantic Tamara finds herself partnered with awkward Sergei while beautiful Anna is pursued but uninterested by three eager suitors. There are upsets and surprises but under the ever-watchful eye of the dance master, the bewitching hour of midnight will weave its magic and unravel it all. Opus 25 Choreography Music Edwaard Liang Michael Torke (Ash) Opus 25 is a specially commissioned work for SDT s 25th Anniversary in 2013, choreographed to showcase the talents of SDT. Danced to a dynamic composition by American composer Michael Torke, this piece showcases the development of the organisation over the past 26 years. The ballet is a grand spectacle, featuring 32 dancers, and brings out the unique attributes and personalities of the dancers in SDT. It was restaged at Ballet Under the Stars 2014, and gained much appreciation from the audiences.
