OH CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN: The Big Red has four captains this season seniors Jordan Dowiak, Christian Knight, Jake Pulver, and junior Clarke Petterson. HARD HAT: Clarke Petterson was selected to carry the Hard Hat for the 2018 season. The tradition of the Hard Hat began in the fall of 1999. Midway through the fall season, a player is selected to carry the Hard Hat for the year. The recipient is someone that the coaches feel demonstrates a blue-collar approach to the game of lacrosse; he is driven and selfless, not the most talented player on the field, but consistently the hardest worker. He puts the team first, and embodies how the coaches want Cornell players to act and respond on or off the field. NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK: The 13-member Class of 2021 features three US Lacrosse All-Americans, and consists of six midfielders, three attackmen, three defenders, and one goalie. The group hails from six different states, including a class-high six New Yorkers, as well as one player coming from Ontario. EVERYBODY S ALL-AMERICAN: Jeff Teat was named an honorable mention All- American by both the USILA and Inside Lacrosse following the 2017 season. TICKLE THE ALL-IVY: The Big Red returns four All-Ivy selections from a year ago Jake Pulver (second-team), Jeff Teat (second-team), Christian Knight (honorable mention) and Clarke Petterson (honorable mention). HOME IS WHERE THE WINS ARE: Cornell has enjoyed a true home field advantage since beginning play on Schoellkopf Field in 1972, going 236-84 for a.738 winning percentage, with 12 undefeated seasons. Cornell has been even more impressive since 2000, going 103-29 overall (.780) with perfect slates in 2015 (6-0), 2011 (8-0), 2009 (6-0), 2007 (7-0) and 2005 (6-0). WHAT WAS LOST: The Big Red lost one All-Ivy selection from a year ago Marshall Peters (honorable mention) as well as seven other letter winners. WHAT REMAINS: Cornell returns 21 letter winners and nine starters, including All- American scoring sensation Jeff Teat, who finished his rookie season as the Ivy League leader in both points (5.54) and assists per game (3.00). Teat is joined by returning All-Ivy selections Clarke Petterson 19 on attack, Jake Pulver 18 on defense, and Christian Knight 18 in goal. Cornell returns 141-of-152 goals (.927), 99-of-103 assists (.961) and 240-of-255 points (.941) from a year ago. UP NEXT: The Big Red returns to Ithaca for a mid-week game against Air Force on Tuesday, March 27 at 5 p.m. Cornell will square off with the Falcons for just the second time in program history. The only other meeting, a 9-6 Big Red victory, took place in the 1968 season-opener in Boca Raton, Fla. Penn Edges Men s Lacrosse, 10-9 ITHACA, N.Y. In a back-and-forth affair in which neither team led by more than two goals, Penn scored three times in the final eight minutes of the contest to steal the 10-9 victory from the Big Red on Schoellkopf Field. Cornell had used a late 5-1 scoring run of its own to go up by two goals early in the fourth quarter, and had several opportunities in the final 1:59 to knot the game, but came up short. The game was played at a methodical pace and the teams combined for seven shot clocks, resulting in three goals and one violation. The teams played to six ties and five lead changes, with Penn s shot-clock beating goal at the 1:59 mark providing the final lead change as the game-winner. Cornell was led by freshman Connor Fletcher, who registered career-highs in goals (five) and points (six), while classmate Jeff Teat chipped in two goals and one assist. Senior Ryan Matthews scored two impressive unassisted goals, knotting the game each time (4-4; 6-6) and linemates Clarke Petterson and Jake McCulloch each tallied one assist. Cornell also got a solid day in the face-off circle from rookie Paul Rasimowicz, who went 13-of-23 with three ground balls and one caused turnover. Penn (4-3, 1-1 Ivy) was led by Simon Mathias six points on three goals and three assists, while JJ McBride also registered a hat trick. In a battle of former Ivy League Rookies of the Year, both goalies were solid with Cornell s Christian Knight finishing with nine saves and Penn s Reed Junkin stopping eight. The Big Red held the edge in shots (35-29) and ground balls (32-26), but Penn put more shots on goal (19-17). Cornell was outstanding in the clearing game, going 18-of- 18, while using a 10-man ride to allow the Quakers to clear just 13-of-18. Penn finished with one extra turnover (13-12) and neither team registered a man-up goal with Cornell going 0-of-4 and Penn going 0-of-2. 2018 Records & Current Streaks Current Streak...Lost 1 Current Home Streak...Lost 1 Current Road Streak...Lost 4 Current Neutral Site Streak... Peter Milliman Interim Head Coach Named the Interim Head Coach on May 8, 2017. Fifth season with the Big Red men s lacrosse program. Acted as the team s recruiting coordinator during his time as an assistant/associate head coach. Named to the coaching staff for the 2019 U.S. men s national indoor team as an assistant coach. Served as the head coach of the Russian national team as it made its debut at the 2014 FIL World Championship in Denver. As the program s recruiting coordinator, Milliman secured Jeff Teat 20, the Big Red s first-ever Inside Lacrosse No. 1 recruit. Prior to bringing Teat to East Hill, Milliman recruited the 15-member class of 2019, which consisted of six US Lacrosse All-Americans, the most to join the program since the 2009 season. Milliman was responsible for recruiting two of the three highest scoring freshmen classes (2016, 2017) in program history.
