AUDIO FOR SPORT Sports events require the construction of many stadiums and other facilities. Audio systems are a small part of the project but they have a disproportionate effect on the overall success of the event in terms of crowd safety, spectators and broadcasters. Audio reaches across all parts of the project and needs to be looked at as a whole. Stadiums are designed and built by different construction teams. This means that the audio systems are installed to different standards and qualities. There is often no connection between the system delivery on the construction side and the operational needs of the event. Remedial work is often required to the venue audio system after construction is complete. This work increases cost but most importantly introduces risk and delay to the whole project. FIFA and life-safety standards are often not adhered to. Badly designed audio systems impact badly on VIPs, press and broadcasters. Whilst each project employs audio consultants and audio contractors, they do not represent, nor do they fully understand the needs of the tournament, the organising committee or sporting associations such as FIFA. Our experience is that problems with stadium audio systems present significant risk sporting events as a whole. Brazil World Cup had numerous audio problems: the opening ceremony audio was not sent to broadcasters, many stadiums had audio problems with significant extra costs and ground safety was not as good as it should have been. Only one stadium actually complied with FIFA standards.
