Holden Club TORQUE Aug 2011 page 7 Committee TORQUE President s Report - Vlad Kowal Report August 2011 Club Members Needed as CAMS Officials Our club is desperately short of officials. We are getting more generous club members who are helping as Flag Marshalls, Starters, Scrutineers, but we really need more Stewards and especially event managers otherwise known as Directors (Motorkhana) and Clerk of Course (Speed events) roles. At the moment, the responsibility falls on just two members to act as Directors Bruce Lethborg and myself. This is simply not enough for our club. If you can possibly consider getting some CAMS qualifications as Scrutineers, Stewards or Flag Marshalls (this can be completed on line mostly) please sign up for some courses. I know it s very hard sometimes because the poor communication from CAMS or the timing isn t right. The whole process is explained on the CAMS website under the Officials tab or via the link at the bottom of this paragraph, and there are some training sessions scheduled soon by CAMS detailed below. There are three upcoming CAMS Officials training courses taking place in August and September in Victoria. Currently all of the below FREE courses have spaces left for current motor sport officials who are looking to further their motor sport officiating abilities. Bronze Scrutiny Training Course: 9am 4pm Saturday & Sunday 20th & 21st August in Shepparton. Bronze Fire & Rescue Course: 7:30pm 10:00pm Tuesday 23rd August in the CAMS Victorian meeting room. Bronze Stewards Course: 7:00pm 10:30pm Monday 12th September in the CAMS Victorian meeting room. All of the courses are free of charge and open to any CAMS officials* of any level. To enrol or for more information on each course please contact Lewis White on Lewis.White@cams.com.au or Ben Manning on Ben.Manning@cams.com.au or by calling the CAMS hotline on 1300 883 959. Places are strictly limited so get in fast to secure your spot! For more information on state news, events and training please visit the Victorian state page on the CAMS website by clicking on the link below. http://cams.com.au/states/victoria.aspx *Please see or contact Vlad or Bruce about how easy it is to get your first Officials license from CAMS. It is as simple as filling in a form and noting the dates that you have already helped with events, which will get you re your first level 4 officials license. The only hard part is finding a passport-sized photo of yourself to include with the application. Club Meetings Return to Monthly Format for the rest of 2011 As mentioned at the last meeting and the previous magazine after further discussion at the committee meeting this month, we have reversed the bi-monthly meeting proposal. The overall feeling was that it would not benefit the club or its members to have a bi-monthly meeting. The August meeting and the rest of the meetings will proceed as originally on the calendar, on the fourth Monday of the month. We will also be asking one club member from the floor to volunteer to speak about something (the racecar, the engine that is being built, plans for their motorkhana beast etc). cont d...

Holden Club TORQUE Aug 2011 page 8 Committee TORQUE President s Report - Vlad Kowal cont d.. There will be a guest speaker coming to share his knowledge of racing suspension setups at our September meeting. August Meeting Our August meeting will commemorate the 39 th year of the club which began its life as the Torana Club in August 1972. After this meeting, the club will be in its 40 th year and we plan several 40 th year celebrations throughout the coming months leading up to August 2012. HSCCV on Facebook Its good to see more members being aware of the Holden club's place on Facebook. We are keen to get more members talking to each other and sharing their stories and comments about the club and their motorsport activities. Make us one of your Facebook friends. Helpers for the rest of our events this year It is now condition of club membership and therefore compulsory for all members to provide helpers (flag marshalls, time-keepers, starters, recovery vehicle) for the Sprints and Motorkhanas which are run by the club or jointly with Ford Four Car Club. This means, at least one helper per membership, but it doesn t have to be the competitor himself or herself. It can be a friend or family member. Recently, there has been an increase in helpers, but in most cases it seems to be our regular helpers. We have had to cancel the Motorkhana for August 21 st because of the lack of a suitable venue which is above water, and my thanks go out to the members who already volunteered to help with this event. We must now concentrate our efforts on three upcoming events where helpers are needed. Two of the events are to be run by HSCCV. The first is the Hillclimb at Bryant Park near Moe on October 16 th and the second is a VMC Motorkhana at Avalon on October 23 rd. The third is the Brighton Holden Sprint at Sandown on November 1st (Melbourne Cup Day). Please contact me (Vlad) via mobile (0438744618) or email (educon@bigpond.net.au) to let me/him know if you or a friend/member of your family can help with any of the forthcoming events. We have several volunteers already for these two events, but we need more. Club T-Shirts and Caps Martin still has plenty of club caps and T-shirts in stock. Bring your $20 or $40 to our next meeting to buy one or both, or pick up your free 2011 cap as a member. Sign Up A Member We have had two recent referrals from club members for new memberships.there are still club points on offer for any member who signs up new members. If you have signed any new members this year, make sure that you follow up with Bruce so that he awards the points to you. The coveted Club Champion trophy is at stake here!...cont d

Holden Club TORQUE Aug 2011 page 9 Committee TORQUE President s Report - Vlad Kowal cont d. CAMS changes and roll cages The pressure is increasing as the deadline nears for organizing log books for our track competition vehicles. All of us who have roll cages in our vehicles which are not log-booked will need to do so before the end of the year. CAMS regulations WILL be changed (more info in CAMS News..this edition...ed) and this will affect many of our club vehicles. Peter Scott has been working hard helping members out with all of their roll-cage issues, but there is still a lot of work to be done. Come along to the club meeting to find out more Club Registration and Permits We have all read a great deal about Vic Roads changes to the club permit system. Some club members are concerned that some members of car clubs may be abusing the system in registering what looks like nearly pure competition, roll-caged vehicles for road use. Our club does not condone the registration of predominantly competition vehicles by club permit registration, as we will not be supporting the registration of such vehicles. see you at the meeting Vlad

Holden Club TORQUE Aug 2011 page 10 Committee TORQUE Secretary s Report Phil Slater Welcome to the August mag and congratulations to our members who took part in the six hour relay. I have had my VZ SV6 with LPG injection for two weeks now and just filled it up with gas after 650 kms it cost me $35.00. Needless to say I m pretty happy with that. While looking for a new car I test drove some new Holdens, courtesy of Brighton Holden, including the Aussie made Cruise in Sri Turbo and CDX Diesel mode. Both of these cars were very impressive and fun to drive but not exactly small cars. The diesel weighs just 50 kilos less than my commodore. I was very impressed with the grunt of the new diesel engine and can see why these cars are becoming so popular. The Sri handled really well and was quick enough but for me the 1.4 turbo had to work too hard to get the job done. I think that a sports version of the diesel would be a good thing. It s a pity that our Motorkhana has had to be cancelled due to flooding as have so many this year but we have a busy October/November coming up. See you at the meeting. Phil Slater Club Apparel and Stock Greetings members, supporters and friends, Spring is just around the corner and the promise of warmer morning starts and the mud that has made our sport sometimes impossible drying up gives us all a nice feeling inside. What a difference a little rain makes as events are being cancelled due to the excess water, compared to the dusty conditions of previous years, when we were in drought. Enough of that its time to talk stock people, at this point I have had no success producing pit shirts at reasonable cost, which is kind of sad that none of the manufacturers can help us and all seem to be only interested in chasing large corporate customers with little or no regard for organisations at grass roots level, hmmm that's us. Producing the T shirts was cheap and easy but an affordable cotton pit shirt is proving to be not so, these jobs always seem at first to be easier than what they really are, but I will keep trying. A special thank you must go out to Wayne Paola for his words at the last general meeting, for all those that missed what Wayne had to say...well you should have been at the meeting, there is incentive to get your bums on seats at the next one. We also have a surplus of 2011 club caps which have not been collected by members who have paid their membership, if you have not done so already please pick it up at the next club meeting. Talking sixes and driving eights, see you at the next meeting, especially if you have not attended for sometime, even better bring a friend as well...martin.

Holden Club TORQUE Aug 2011 page 15 CAMS news... BOARD BRIEF BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING (No. 244) The CAMS Board convened via telephone conference on Tuesday, 9 August 2011 at 19:00. 2012 SCHEDULE J UPDATES FOLLOWING FEEDBACK The Board resolved to approve amendments to Schedule J Safety Cages: Main roll bar to reflect updates in the FIA regulations, in side view the vertical part of the roll bar cannot be bent. The height of the main roll bar for open cars has also been clarified, the top of the helmet being a minimum of 50mm from the top of the roll bar, which aligns with the provisions of the FIA and other ASNs. Backstays clarification that backstays need to be straight for all types of vehicles. This is no different to the current Schedule J. Diagonal members - clarification that every diagonal must be straight. Certified safety cages - A note clarifies CAMS requirements with a view to reducing the number of non-compliant cages being submitted. There have also recently been a number of certified safety cages updated or repaired. A procedure exists to upgrade such safety cages but the documentation must continue to match and this is clarified in the regulations. A small number of other minor grammatical clarifications have also been made. Competitors are reminded that any safety cage construction commenced this year will be able to be recognised by CAMS, provided they comply with the current (2011) provisions of Schedule J. The detail of these changes will be published by bulletin at the earliest opportunity. PROPOSED RECOGNITION OF MSNZ MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR ROLL OVER PRO- TECTION FOR NZ-DOMICILED RALLY CARS The Board confirmed the continuation of a transitional arrangement to allow Rally Cars domiciled in New Zealand and recognised by Motor Sport New Zealand, to compete in Australian rallies.. STANDING ORDERS: AUSTRALIAN HISTORIC MOTOR RACE COMMISSION The Board amended the Standing Orders for CAMS Commissions to include that nominations for membership to the Australian Historic Motor Race Commission are to be provided to State Councils for selection from the nominees submitted by CAMS affiliated clubs identified as having an active involvement in historic motor sport within the relevant state. CIRCUIT RACE LICENSING REVIEW The Board noted a report from the Australia Motor Racing Commission on the process of its review of the Circuit Race Licensing, including an outline of the process to be undertaken for feedback, before a future decision paper is presented to the CAMS Board. 2012 NATIONAL STEWARDS APPOINTMENTS The Board noted an updated version of the 2012 National Stewards Appointments provided by the CAMS Judicial Advisory Committee, which will call for an open expression of interest for all current CAMS Stewards to apply for national positions. Details will be posted onto our webpage in due course. 4WD IN VEHICLE CATEGORY 2A The Board acknowledged the change made to item 4.4 of Specifications of Automobiles Group 2A to allow the establishment of separate classes for 4WD vehicles in Speed events. This will allow State Championship (s)/series or event organisers to provide for 4WD vehicles. CORPORATE SERVICES REPORT The Board reviewed and noted the year to date financial performance of the Organisation

Holden Club TORQUE Aug 2011 page 16 Club TORQUE Motorkhana/Group5 Frank Rogan (Vice-President) Hi folks... From my perspective last month s general meeting was one of the best we ve had in a long time. Those who weren t there missed a great opportunity to experience the levels of passion and enthusiasm for the club that virtually everyone who was there injected into it. Thank you to all who attended and provided input into how we can improve this club for all of us. From a committee level the club is building further support for the members and promoting itself through the use of social media. It s another way we can swap stories, post pictures, laugh together and generally connect with one another. Search for Holden Sporting Car Club on Facebook, and join us. The club s Facebook page incidentally was set up about 2 years ago and is only now getting some decent use. Thanks to Ian for setting it up. One of the recent outcomes from the Committee is to promote our club on National Television, and a meeting is being organized to pursue those possibilities. It is important for the future of the club for us all to continue to inform people about our club and what it offers. Same too to have some fresh faces in Committee positions for next year. Our AGM is in November and it s a great chance for you to continue to steer this club towards a bright future into 2012 and beyond. Many of the current Committee are getting tired now doing all they can to provide you what is a great car club. Now is the time to start giving it some consideration, if you ve never been on the Committee before please ask some questions about what s involved. Onto events past and present, there s been a few events but nothing that I ve personally attended this month so I cannot tell you much really about what s been happening, other than to interpret the results. On Saturday July 16 the Bendigo Saleyards were awash with revving engines and tyre squeals as 40 entrants tackled 8 tests. Tamara being the only Holden Sporting member there had some solid competition with her 3 rd place being only two flags from a win. With only 25 competitors at the John Mott Memorial Sprint at Sandown on July 17, Nissan Car Club will have copped a decent loss despite good promotion of the event. Interestingly, I don t think any of our members attended that one even though we added their Supp Regs into our magazine. The Victorian 6 hour Regularity Relay ran at Phillip Island on 7 th August. Congrats to Mark Kakouri and the boys from the Autocure Motorsports team. Eighteen Victorians travelled all the way to Mt Gambier also on August 7 th for SEAC s Victorian Motorkhana. It would seem like the Victorian contingent was required as there was a total of only 34 competitors. Once again Tamara was the only HSCCV member to make the trip for some tyre-frying fun. Apparently it was a really well-organized event with 13 tests, including a double up of one test and another one reversed. Your Committee have decided to cancel Group 5 motorkhana event way before the August 21 date. There s a bit of a story there. It turned out that Avalon was already scheduled to host an event on the day. With that a venue change was required so some weeks ago we booked Rutter Park at Tooradin. At that stage of booking the grounds the whole area was completely flooded from recent rains, with the exception of the footy oval (no, we cannot play there!) and the park caretaker suggested that it would probably still be under water by the time our event was set to run. They have drainage issues there and have lobbied for quite some time for funding a suitable solution. In the past they have pumped out the area they use for tractor-pull events. And of course the moment it rains again, they find themselves back at square one....cont d

Holden Club TORQUE Aug 2011 page 17 Club TORQUE Motorkhana/Group5 Frank Rogan...cont d So the advice was to find another venue given the likelihood of it being okay for our use was likely to be extremely low. We took a punt and submitted a Permit application to CAMS to use Rutter Park anyway, crossed our fingers and then started investigating other venues, all the while hoping that the body of water at Tooradin would somehow find its way quickly out to Western Port Bay. After assessing some livestock exchanges, checking in with Melton to find the grounds at Mt Cottrell virtually non-existent, then scouring the state for other venues, the best option for a different venue appeared to also include a date change to the day before (the 20 th ) and organizing Bendigo Livestock Exchange. This seemed quite a risk with less than 3 weeks available to organize it all and with it being a bitumen surface also changed things significantly. Plus, it was going to fall upon the usual people (the Committee) to rally together to make it all happen, so unfortunately for all it made more sense for us to cancel it early. Another last ditch call to Rutter Park s caretaker indicated that extra rain had just fallen, and there was no real difference in water levels out there. Bugger! At least in the process of finding suitable grounds, some valuable discussions began with the Melton Drag Boat people for setting up a permanent venue for motorkhanas. We will keep you posted on developments. Bad weather is very unlikely to prevent the 3 rd round of the Victorian Super Sprint Championships though on August 21 at Phillip Island. This will enable our speed freaks to get their kicks. Then the first weekend of September (4 th ) sees a head-to-head motorkhana at Avalon. It s a Ford Four/Toyota Car Club combined event and a Group 5 round. Please see my article from last month s for an understanding of the head-to-head aspect of this event. Let s also cross our fingers for good weather. Huntly Livestock Exchange will come alive again with tyre screeching and motors singing when Bendigo Car Club run their VMC on Saturday 10 th September. I ll leave you with a small number of pictures: It s one thing to have a bright exhaust, but this was far beyond that. Every time this bloke stood on his brakes these super-bright blue LEDs around the perimeter of his exhaust would light up. Never seen anything like it hope to never see anything like it again. See you sideways or at the meeting! Frank.

Went to a local car show the other week, this buggy and the motor bike seemed to attract a lot of attention, thought you might like a pic. The buggy has a big block Chev. The driver puts their feet on the plates above the front wheels and the air filter is also a seat. The motor bike in the background is powered by a V8. Hope to see you at the next General Meeting Alex

Holden Club TORQUE Aug 2011 page 19 Membership and Points score Hi Guys, Great news, the membership program is up and running but, it only runs on windows XP, it won t run on windows 7, so it is running on my notebook computer. I have spent a few hours and got the point score and membership up to date and have included the latest point score. Even though the program is running, we still need to have it upgraded/rewritten so it can run on win7 and future programs that Bill Gates is working on. So if anyone out there can help us, please let the committee know. I have just come back from a trip to Canberra, Joooooolya invited me and Leanne up for a barbie. But being a typical politician, she didn t keep her promise, so we had a bit of a look around town and one of the places we visited was the national museum, and in one section of the museum there was a gleaming 48-215 Holden (FX to some) turns out to be the number 1 of three prototypes that Holden used to test the final design. The story goes that the car had a new engine fitted to it and was sold to a GMH employee after GMH was finished with it. The guy drove it around for a few years and traded it in on a new Holden. The dealer was in Gippsland and decided to keep the car and it was left for many years in storage until it was sold to a father and son who rebuilt the car showed it around the all Holden days etc. then sold it to the museum in 2003 for a reported $640,000!. Now it is part of a GMH display in the museum in Canberra. printed by Ma roondah Printing

Holden Club TORQUE Aug 2011 page 27 Holden myths and legends In 1980, Peter Brock and John Harvey took HDT Special vehicles to a little workshop in Chetwynd St in North Melbourne...and started producing HDT Commodores (based on VC SL/E Commodore sedans). They sold all they made and from that success, they took the VH SS and morphed it into Grp 1, 2 and 3 versions. John Harvey famously said if these are not the best sports sedans in the world, I will stand rooted. The rest of course is history

Holden Club TORQUE Aug 2011 page 29 Hi there After a longer break than I would have preferred, we are heading for the Southern Highlands and Wakefield Park on 11 th, 12 th and 13 th November 2011. This Shannons Spring Invitation will be a great way to wind up the year and catch up with all your racing compatriots before the Christmas silly season gets under way. Being almost summer time, there ll be plenty of daylight; and we re setting aside lots of track time for our regular racing categories. Naturally, there ll be the usual Private Practice and Masters sessions on the Friday, for those who want it. So please mark your diary for mid-november, remembering the great meetings we ve had in years past. Since we value your support, through thick and thin, I will come back to you shortly with some ideas to save you time and money in these times when both are in short supply! Best Regards Charles Jardine FoSC Event Director http://www.fosc.com.au/
