Upset Bid Bounces Out The Blue Hose looked poised to knock off the league s top team, Gardner-Webb, but Shonda Bunrside s shot at the buzzer rimmed out, missing by half the width of a human hair. With the scores tied and 11 seconds left in regulation, Kristen Stevens matriculated the ball down the floor and cruised into the lane for a layup with three seconds left. Her effort bounced off the rim and to Burnside, whose second chance effort bounced twice off the rim and fell wide to force the game into overtime. The Blue Hose were outscored 10-7 in the extra frame. Early Defensive Success In the games against Allen (2/9) and UNC Asheville (2/13), the Blue Hose defense has shined early by holding the opponents scoreless until the 12:13 point in both games. PC on the other hand has outscored opponents, 27-0 in the span while forcing 10 turnovers and taking five steals. The Blue Hose kept the streak alive by keeping NC Central off the scoreboard until 14:31 in the first half. PC Women s Basketball Game Notes Game #29 LIBERTY 3/1/10 Page 3 In Form Stevens Sophomore Kristen Stevens has had the best recent form of any PC player of late. The second-year forward averaged 14.0 points per game with 16 against NC Central, 15 at High Point and UNCA and 10 at Gardner-Webb. She s 20-for- 38 from the field (52.6 percent) and 9-of-25 from downtown (36 percent). She has started all four games and is averaging 30.0 minutes per game. That s OUR Ball The Blue Hose set a season low in turnovers allowed at UNC Asheville as PC gave the ball away only 15 times. The combined with 16 assists marked the first time this season that Ronny Fisher s team has had a positive assist-to-turnover ratio. Road Woes Saying that times have been tough for the Blue Hose away from Clinton might be a severe understatement. Sure PC is 0-14 this season on the road, but the road losing streak goes much further than that. The Blue Hose are winless in their last 41 games away from home. Double Dozens Freshman Dria David took top scoring honors against Winthrop for the second straight time, scoring 12 points in both the Winthrop and Coastal Carolina games. It was the first time in her career that she went back-to-back games in double figures. Awesome Halftime Talk After scoring just 10 points and sitting in a 12-point hole against Winthrop, PC rallied to erase the deficit and take its first come from behind win of the season. The Blue Hose committed 16 turnovers in the first half, only two shy of the team low of 18 which was set against Coastal Carolina. However, in the second half, PC cut that to just six give-aways. Mariah Among League Leaders Mariah Pietrowski s scoring output has placed her among the Big South leaders this year. She ranks 12th in points per game with 10.8 ppg. Her field goal percentage of.589 percent puts her in second place in the league s latest stat report. The Amanda Mills 500 Well, it wasn t time for Daytona yet, but Amanda Mills did a 500 of her own when she crossed the 500 point plateau for career scoring against UNC Ashevile, scoring 16 points in the loss. She needs 468 points to reach the 1,000 point mark. With one season left and an expected 34 games remaining in her career, she would need to average 13.7 points per game to go into the 1,000 point club and be the first PC student-athlete to reach the milestone while playing their whole career in Division I. Undefeated Hose PC is an undefeated 5-0 in this season when outscoring opponents. Five Wins SETS Division I School Record With the win over Allen, PC set a new school record for wins in the Division I era. In PC s second D-I season, the Blue Hose doubled the total from the first D-I season. In order to keep the trend alive, PC needs three additional wins from the final four games. While most look upon Monday with lament, the Blue Hose have thrived on the work week s opening day. PC is 3-5 overall on Monday with two of the defeats coming against Big East and SEC foes....but Tuesday s NOT Gone With The Wind PC s best day of the week to play this year has been Tuesday. The Blue Hose are 1-1 this year when playing on Tuesday. What s A Blue Hose??? A Blue Hose is a fierce Scotch-Irish warrior. If you have ever seen the movie Braveheart, you have seen a true Blue Hose. Despite this depiction, it still has been asked many times where Presbyterian College received its Blue Hose nickname. Several rumors exist and Ray Frank in his book, What s In A Nickname delved into the subject. Frank discovered that there were many opinions. One story had it that the Presbyterian Scotch-Irish wore blue stockings in the Puritan beginnings of our country. Another said that a fierce war-like band of Scotch- Irish named the Hose painted their entire bodies blue before going into battle. Yet, probably the true story lies in a letter dated June 15, 1935, written by then PC athletic director Walter Johnson to an inquiring English professor in Virginia... (quoting from Walter Johnson s letter) It was about the second or third year, 1915, if I remember right. I think it happened this way: I changed uniform colors to blue, wearing blue stockings and jerseys, and some sports writer started calling in his articles the Presbyterian College teams the Blue Stockings.... in later years Stocking became abbreviated to the Hose, particularly in newspaper headlines, and was more or less officially adopted by the student body in the 1950 s. All the PC media guides since 1996 continued to elaborate on the issue, quoting an article by Ben Hay Hammet entitled The Spirt of PC. The piece by Hammet articulated that, Johnson always insisted on the fact that his players wear long blue socks similar to stockings (after all, there were White Sox and Red Sox in baseball). Coach Johnson s explanation may simply be coincidental to the fact that the phrase Blue Stocking Presbyterian goes back informally quite a few years in the denomination s history. Nevertheless, PC s athletic nickname was shortened to Blue Hose in 1954. Blue Hose Picked Ninth in Big South The Big South Conference head coaches and a media panel. There are five newcomers on the 10-player roster. For those of you keeping score at home, that s half the roster making their first campaign with the Blue Hose. No Tournament??? If you wonder why the Big South Conference tournament doesn t appear on the schedule, the simple answer is that PC isn t eligible. The Blue Hose are in their third season of reclassification to Division I. While in the period, the Blue Hose are not eligible for postseason play according to NCAA rules. Joy In Fisher Family Head Coach Ronny Fisher closed a disappointing road trip to New York with a day of great joy. Coach Fisher and his wife Julie gave birth to their third child on Nov. 17. Baby Jacob (Jake) Robert Fisher tipped the scale at 8 lbs. Presbyterian College Athletics congratulates the Fishers on the latest addition to the Blue Hose family.
