In this go-around, Mizzou tennis sends sophomore Beatriz Machado Santos, sophomore Cassidy Spearman and freshman Brianna Lashway to Bloomington, Ind. for the 2014 Hoosier Classic. This weekend will mark the first action for both Santos and Spearman since the Sept. 19-21 Mizzou Invite in Kansas City, Mo. After an impressive Fall 2014 opener in Kansas City, where she went a combined 6-2, Lashway followed up with a pair of victories in Athens, Ga. (Oct. 10-12). MIZZOU WELCOMES THREE NEWCOMERS FOR Head Coach Sasha Schmid brings in three newcomers for Mizzou tennis this season. Brittany Lashway comes to Mizzou after last playing in 2012-13 at Syracuse University. While with the Orange, Lashway went 11-4 in doubles play which included an outstanding 11-1 mark at the No. 1 spot. Brianna Lashway is the lone Mizzou freshman for the Fall 2014 season. The first-year Tiger posted an impressive high school career in Bradenton, Fla. before traveling to Columbia, Mo. Lashway reached the semifinals and placed fourth at the 2013 Regional National Florida Open Girl s 18-U Tournament after winning the qualifying tournament for the event. Additionally, the younger Lashway sister also qualified for the 2013 $10,000 Tournament in Hilton Head, S.C. Santos is another transfer for Mizzou tennis this year, as she competed last year at Texas Tech. The Lisbon, Portugal native went 26-11 overall for the Red Raiders in 2013-14 which included a 16-5 record in doubles and 10-6 mark in singles play. CLARK, HINE, RHYNER, & SPEARMAN MAKE UP TIGERS UPPERCLASSMEN GROUP To go along with the talented Mizzou tennis newcomers, Alex Clark, Kelli Hine, Madison Rhyner, and Cassidy Spearman all return this year for a proven collection of upperclassmen. As the lone senior this year, Clark will be leaned upon for her contributions both on-and-off the court. The London, England native is just 11 singles wins shy for 50 in her collegiate career. Hine is primed for a breakout junior campaign, as she has seen her singles and doubles win totals climb each of her first two years at Mizzou. Rhyner was a steady contributor for Mizzou last year, and will likely remain at the No. 3 - No. 4 spot in both singles and doubles play. Spearman is another talented youngster for the Tigers, after racking up nine singles wins and 11 doubles wins for the team in 2013-14. FINAL 2013-14 SEC STANDINGS SEC Pct. Overall Pct. The Tigers have posted a 29-45 overall record in Schmid s first three years in Columbia. Now inside one of the top collegiate tennis conferences in the country (SEC), the Tigers continue to face fierce competition each fall and spring season. Eight of the team s 29 victories the past three seasons have come against ranked foes, while 28 of their 45 losses have came at the hands of top-25 programs. This past 2013-14 campaign, Mizzou had a pair of program firsts inside the Southeastern Conference (SEC), including their first conference win over Mississippi State on April 11, 2014 and their first SEC Tournament win over Arkansas on April 16, 2014. Under Schmid s guidance, Cierra Gaytan-Leach was named to the 2014 All-SEC second team, marking the first time a Tigers tennis player earned All-Conference honors since 2005. Heading in to the 2012-13 season, Mizzou was ranked in the preseason polls to start the year for the first time since 2005. The Tigers would go on to defeat four ranked squads during that year, including a 4-3 win over No. 23 Tennessee on Mar. 31, 2013. Of the team s 12 losses that season, 11 came against ranked opponents, including four to top-10 squads and six to programs ranked within the top-25. The 2011-12 Tigers posted an 11-12 record and narrowly missed the NCAA Tournament, while facing a difficult schedule that included 15 matches against ranked teams. Over the course of the spring season, Mizzou reached as high as 42nd in the national rankings, the program s highest recognition since 2003. The Tigers earned five wins over ranked foes and earned their first-ever appearance in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Kick-Off Weekend. Additionally, the doubles duo of Tigers Jamie Mera and Nina Pantic finished the season ranked as the 50th-best doubles team in the nation. Schmid was named Mizzou s tennis coach on April 26, 2011, following a highly successful 10-year run as head coach at Stetson University. During her tenure at Stetson, Schmid posted an 132-101 overall record, including an impressive 35 combined wins over her last two seasons in DeLand, Fla. The Hatters tennis program tied the school season win total in 2010 with 18 victories, and followed with another impressive 2011 campaign which saw them claim 17 more wins. Stetson went 49-21 overall under Schmid s guidance the last three seasons (2009-11). In 2009, Schmid earned her third overall and second consecutive Atlantic Sun Conference Coach of the Year award after her Hatters went 14-8 overall and 8-1 in Atlantic Sun conference play. The impressive campaign earned the team a share of the regular season championship and the top seed heading into that year s conference tournament. Stetson advanced to the tournament finals for the third time in their last five years. During the Spring 2009 season, Hatter student-athletes earned both singles and doubles victories against ITA nationally ranked opponents. Also while at Stetson, Schmid served as the chairperson of both the ITA Southeast Regional Committee and Atlantic Sun Women s Tennis Coaches Committee, and a member of the ITA National Coaches Committee. M I Z Z O U T E N N I S / / M U T I G E R S. C O M ASSISTANT COACH Jason Potth off Hired in June of 2011, Jason Potthoff enters his fourth season as the Mizzou tennis assistant coach. When hired, Potthoff became the first-ever full-time assistant coach for the Mizzou tennis program. Previously, all assistants working for the program were not a full-time level. Jason Potthoff Assistant Coach 4th Year At Mizzou Alma Mater Texas A&M University 05 Business Administration & Marketing Texas A&M University 07 Masters of Sports Management Coaching Experience University of Missouri Assistant Coach, 2011-Present John Newcombe Tennis Academy (New Braunfels, Texas) United States Professional Tennis Association Texas A&M University Graduate Assistant, 2005-07 In his first three seasons alongside head coach Sasha Schmid, Potthoff has helped the Tigers continue positive advancement both on-and-off the court. This past 2013-14 campaign, Mizzou had a pair of program firsts inside the Southeastern Conference (SEC), including their first conference win over Mississippi State on April 11, 2014 and their first SEC Tournament win over Arkansas on April 16, 2014. With the help of Potthoff s guidance, Cierra Gaytan-Leach was named to the 2014 All-SEC second team, marking the first time a Tigers tennis player earned All-Conference honors since 2005. Potthoff, a 2005 graduate of Texas A&M University, has been a highly-regarded tennis instructor and coach at several stops since the mid-2000s. Before arriving to the Mizzou Tennis Center in Columbia, Mo., Potthoff worked at the John Newcombe Tennis Academy in New Braunfels, Texas, where he worked with nationally and internationally ranked junior tennis players on a daily basis. He also spent two seasons as a graduate assistant coach for his alma mater in College Station, Texas (2005-07) and in between those jobs, he spent seven months on staff with the United States Professional Tennis Association.
