Tauranga Intermediate School *30 18th Avenue * PO Box 2141 Tauranga E-Mail Address: karenh@tauranga-int.school.nz * Phone: 07 578 4401 *Fax: 07 578 2618 3 February 2014 Dear Parents/Caregivers and Students SPORT AT TAURANGA INTERMEDIATE 2014 We are very passionate about sport at Tauranga Intermediate from participation all the way through to top competition with the NZCT AIMS GAMES being the pinnacle of our sporting Calendar in September. We are very fortunate to have outstanding sporting facilities at our school with the new TECT Gymnasium. It features an indoor netball court, a basketball court, 5 badminton courts, kiwi volleyball and full size volleyball courts, a squash court, a fitness centre, a rock climbing and bouldering wall. Together with the recent replacement of our turf which has 4 tennis courts/4 netball courts also hockey and football field markings and a new artificial wicket on our field we are very well equipped. We are also pleased to welcome back Brett Hampton and Sam Shergold who will be assisting in our sports department. Both young men are talented sportsman in their own fields and are great role models for our students. We also have wonderful staff who give their discretionary commitment to sport in at least one code or more as well as a supportive parent and whanau community. This newsletter is to inform you about the sports that we have on offer at Tauranga Intermediate and how you can get involved in them from Day 1. You are only at our school for two short years, so you need to make the most of opportunities, by committing yourself to attend meetings and practices and you will have a lot of fun and meet lots of new friends. We are such a large school and often communication is difficult but I encourage any student that wishes to get fully involved, to ensure they read our Daily Notices. These are available in every classroom, first thing every morning on the school computer intranet. It is part of the classroom routine to read these notices each morning. These notices always have messages regarding meetings, practices etc. and is always our first port of call when trying to get information out to students with regards to sports.

Please encourage your child to attend any meetings so that they receive the information, even if they are not sure how keen they are from the beginning go along, get the information and then make a decision. During this first term we offer the following team sports that are played weekly throughout the term cricket, volleyball and waterpolo - more information on days, times and fees can be found on the attachment. As there is only such a limited timeframe to get these teams up and running, you must return your permission slips and money by the due date. There are also opportunities to do surfing, tennis and squash coaching, golf, gymnastics, trampoline, tae kwon do, hip hop and cheerleading lessons at school as well. Also during Term 1 we hold our school swimming sports (3rd March) and compete in the BOP Golf inter-school tournament. We also belong to the Bay of Plenty/Poverty Bay Intermediate Association and the competitions they run during this term are Surfing, Touch Rugby, an Open Water Swim and Swimming Champs. We also hold our own tennis, badminton and squash champs at school this term. This term will also have trials for our winter sports. Over the winter terms we usually have around 18 netball teams playing on Saturdays, 10 basketball teams play on a Monday and 7 hockey teams that play Friday nights. There are also opportunities for rugby, football, mountain biking, indoor climbing, indoor bowls, squash, cross country, canoe challenge, ultimate frisbee and the list goes on. The Sports Office is located in the entrance of the gymnasium and all permission slips, money, uniforms relating to Sports are handed in there. If the office is unattended there is a letter-box in the door for money and slips. Please ensure it is clearly labelled. CRICKET Saturday morning games are held locally (School/Waipuna Park etc.) but can require travel north to Katikati or south to Pongakawa. Coaching will be organised at school by us (and some willing parents) - Reserve Grade trains Wednesday after school and Premier Division train Thursday after school. We usually enter 3 to 4 teams in each Grade. Teams are 8 aside. We require parental assistance to manage, umpire and score ideally at least three adults per team. Mr Aubrey Jeftha is our Teacher in Charge. Tauranga Junior Cricket Association require details of players birth date, address, contact phone numbers and parents names for their database. Fee $35. WATERPOLO There are three grades, A, B and C. A & B Grades being the more experienced players compete on evenings. The C Grade play on Friday nights. The games are played in the dive pool at Windermere Polytechnic. All teams are mixed gender at this age group. New players are most welcome and will play in the C Grade Competition. Please note your child must be able to tread water unassisted for at least 5 minutes in the deep pool.

Team members will need appropriate swimming gear only. Organisers will supply all the waterpolo equipment, referees etc. Each team must have a parent as the team coach or manager. The fee covers pool entry, use of gear and referees. Most teams will want at least 10 players. Seven team members play at once but as the game is tiring it is a good idea to have at least 3 others to substitute when you wish. We can have up to 13 players in a team. This year we have arranged for an introduction/familiarisation session to run along side our initial trial. This session will be held at Windermere Polytechnic Pool on Friday 7th February from 1.00 pm - 2.45pm. From this session, students will be tentatively placed in a team relevant to their skill level and ability. Parental assistance with transport to and from the pool will be required. Please indicate on slip below if you are able to assist. This session is essential if you wish to be considered for A or B grades. A practice game to help finalise squad/team selections will be scheduled the following 11th February evening - time to be confirmed. VOLLEYBALL - KIWI LEAGUE We run our own Kiwi Volleyball League competition in our gym on a Thursday after school. Games will be 30 minutes long and we will cater for a maximum of 20 teams playing at 3.15pm and 3.45pm. The competition runs for 7 weeks commencing 27th February and finishes 10th April. Fee $15. Teams can comprise of any mix of students. They can be same or mixed genders and/ or same or mixed year groups. There are 4 players on the court at one time and you will also need at least 2 substitutes. Ideal team size is 5 to 6 players. There is no throwing and catching in this competition. The students have been asked to organise themselves into teams before Thursday 21st February. Each team will have a special envelope that is given to the Captain who will collect each team members return slip and money. Please help the captains to get this job done efficiently so that all of the envelopes are returned to the Sport Office by due date or preferably as soon as possible. Students will require picking up from school after their games. Students wishing to be available as referees please come and register at the Sports Office. VOLLEYBALL - SUPER LEAGUE More experienced players can enter into the Super League 6-aside Competition. There is an A Grade Competition on evenings at QEYC which we can enter 2 teams into. The competition commences 18th and Friday 21st February and runs for 8 weeks till 11th/15th April. Teams will require around 8 players. Games are played usually between 4.30-7.00pm.
