Newsletter April, 2017 The VOLLEY Welcome to the April, 2017 edition of The Volley! More unsettled weather has arrived as we say goodbye to a sensational stretch of ideal tennis weather over March and April. It was also good for completing all the refurbishment work going on at the Club. Membership Our membership has grown again since the March edition of the Volley and we are now sitting at 162 members including honorary members and members via sponsorship packages which is higher than last year s peak. I wonder how many other sporting clubs could boast that statistic? Social Events Upcoming Events Sat 13 th May 35+ Social tennis day Sat 29 th July Jazz Night Early October DTC Doubles Club Championships The Devonport Jazz event featuring Georgina Harvey and Da Jazz Boiz is the next major function to be run at the Club on 29 th July. We have registered with the DCC to hold an event again this year, but we will be containing the ticket sales to just 120 people as the crowd last year was too big for our small sized venue, even with the deck area. Tickets are now on sale via devonporttickets.com.au. We will report more about the Jazz night in due course. Note the number limit on this event, so get in early to avoid disappointment! Club improvements Work has been completed on the stabilisation and re-fencing of courts 7 to 12 and the resurfacing of courts 10, 11 and 12. The committee is very pleased with the end result. Members should note that all external gates do not have a lock now. If a ball is hit outside the court, the gates can be opened from the inside but not the outside. Note also that there is a new gate on the northern end of courts 11/12 which will make it easier to retrieve an errant ball in that area. Gray noticed that after the recent rain, there were no bird baths (slight depressions) anywhere on these courts which is a sign that these courts have a very smooth surface.

Work is continuing on tasks around the Clubhouse including the repositioning of all sponsors advertising from the Clubhouse wall to the external fence near the entrance gate, painting the walls on the eastern end of the building, the eaves, the fascia boards and the roof. We have been successful in our application to the DCC for a Minor Community Grant to extend the deck along the western end of the Clubhouse and incorporate an invalid access onto the deck. This work will be done over winter. The Committee at the last meeting agreed to get quotes on installing removable shade cloth curtains around the edge of the deck so that this area can be used in winter when functions are held at the Clubhouse without having to nail tarps or plastic to the deck posts and rails. Don t forget that members can now access the toilets using their gate key if the Clubhouse is locked. Tennis news Burnie Devonport Challenge Last Saturday, a group of 46 Devonport Tennis Club members travelled to Burnie for the return match for this summer s Burnie/Devonport Challenge. I am happy to report that Devonport cleaned up on the day 32 rubbers to 16 rubbers. Here is the detailed results: Grade Devonport (rubbers) Burnie (rubbers) A grade 13 5 B Doubles 12 4 Ladies 4 4 Junior 3 3 Total 32 16 This was a great result for our Club and brings us level with Burnie over the last two years of this competition with 2 wins for each Club.
