RAMS NOTEBOOK A CSU Win Would - Be the Rams first win over a Big Ten opponent since Dec. 6, 1997, a 75-63 win at Indiana. The last time CSU played a Big Ten foe was on Dec. 21, 2011 (vs. Indiana L, 47-39). The Rams have dropped six straight contests to Big Ten members, but in between Thursday s contest and most recent win, defeated Maryland (March 17, 2002) and Rutgers (Nov. 20, 1998). However, those wins came before those schools were members of the Big Ten. - Be the Rams 13th win in their last 14 true road contests. - Give the Rams their 30th win in the last 32 games. Record Watch - Elin Gustavsson is closing in on 1,000 points for her career at Colorado State, needing just six to reach the milestone after scoring 13 on Friday and 11 on Monday. Gustavsson scored 324 points as a freshman, 295 as a sophomore and 351 last season. - Also nearing the 1,000-point career milestone is Ellen Nystrom, who needs just 14 to reach that mark. Nystrom averaged 10.2 points per game over 338 total points in 2015-16, and scored 319 as a freshman and 286 in her sophomore season. - The duo of Nystrom and Gustavsson would be the fourth from the same senior class to reach 1,000 points at CSU. The most recent CSU duo from the same class to score 1,000 each were Melissa Dennett/Lindsay Thomas (2002-06, while the only other two pairs were Becky Hammon/Katie Cronin (1995-99) and Karen Hosek-Kreuzer/Sherry Neely (1981-85). Scouting Nebraska - Nebraska is 1-1 to start the season, one year removed from a WNIT appearance. The Cornhuskers exited in the first round of the postseason tournament last year, falling 64-62 to Northern Iowa. - In Preseason WNIT play, the Huskers defeated UTRGV (Texas-Rio Grande Valley), 71-53. Most recently, Nebraska fell to then-no. 25 Missouri, 55-35. Nebraska s 35 points in that game matched its second-lowest total in school history. - Preseason All-Big Ten selection Jessica Shepard has led the Huskers offensively through their first two games, averaging 14.5 points and 12 rebounds per game. Only six other players on the Huskers active roster have made starts in a collegiate game. - Nebraska has proved a tough opponent for visiting teams, as the Huskers are 44-9 in 53 games all-time in Pinnacle Bank Arena. Now in its fourth season in Pinnacle Bank Arena, Nebraska women s hoops ranked No. 9 in the nation last season in total attendance. Nystrom Earns Mountain West s First Player of the Week Award of 2016-17 - Following the top scoring performance of her career, senior guard Ellen Nystrom was the recipient of the Mountain West s first Women s Basketball Player of the Year award of the 2016-17 season. - Nystrom scored the most points of any Mountain West player through Nov. 13, dropping a career-high 22 points to lead the Rams to a 69-42 win over Omaha. Nystrom shot.571 (8-for-14) for the night, marking the second-highest shooting percentage of any MW player over that period. Rounding out an impressive start to her senior campaign was a career-high three offensive rebounds (five total). - The weekly honor was the second of Nystrom s career. Her first came on March 6, 2016. QUICK FACTS GENERAL INFORMATION Location...Fort Collins, Colo. RAMS NOTEBOOK (CONT.) Nystrom Named Preseason MW Player of the Year - Leading the top returners for CSU is senior guard Ellen Nystrom, who was named the 2016-17 Preseason MW Player of the Year as part of the preseason conference voting. During conference play last season, Nystrom averaged 11.1 points, 5.8 rebounds and 5.7 assists per game, along with the league s best assist/turnover ratio (2.6). - Program records held by Nystrom include CSU s single-season assists record (186) a record previously held by CSU great Becky Hammon as well as the singlegame program record for assists (16), which she set in the 2016 MW Tournament championship game. CSU in the National Polls to Open 2016-17 - In the first polls leading up to the 2016-17 women s basketball season, Colorado State is receiving votes in both national polls the AP Poll and the USA Today Coaches Poll. At the start of the season, CSU received 17 votes in the coaches poll, and 10 from the AP. - The Rams entered the polls last season, climbing as high as No. 22 entering NCAA Tournament play. Last season s stretch of rankings marked the first time since 2002 that CSU had been nationally ranked by the AP Poll. Rams Look for Fourth Straight Postseason Berth - Entering the 2016-17 season, the Rams will be looking for their fourth straight postseason appearance. The 2015-16 Rams reached the NCAA Tournament after a dramatic win over Fresno State in the MW Tournament championship game, while each of the 2013-14 and 2014-15 teams earned selections to the WNIT. - CSU s bid to the NCAA Tournament last season was its sixth all-time. Before the 2015-16 season, the Rams had not reached the NCAA Tournament since 2002. Rams to Defend Three Consecutive MW Regular Season Titles - CSU was once again picked to win the Mountain West in 2016-17, and will look to defend each of its regular season and tournament titles. The Rams have won the MW in the regular season in each of the past three seasons (2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16). - No other program in Mountain West history has ever won three consecutive regular season conference titles outright. Additionally, no current MW member has ever won consecutive regular season titles. The only other program to win consecutive regular season titles was Utah. Williams Nearing 100 Wins at CSU - Now entering his fifth season as CSU head coach, Ryun Williams is nearing 100 wins at the helm of the Rams program. Williams compiled a 90-37 record over his first four seasons at CSU. - The Rams have averaged 22.5 wins per season during the Williams era. Excluding an 11-19 first season (2012-13), CSU has averaged 26.3 wins each season. Elite Defense - During the Ryun Williams era at CSU, one of the hallmarks of CSU s success has been stellar defense. The Rams expect to be strong on the defensive end again in 2016-17. - In 2016-17, the Rams ranked fifth in the nation in field goal percentage defense, sixth in scoring defense and eighth in three-point field goal defense. CSU was the only team in the country to be ranked in the top eight in each of the three defensive categories at the end of last season. Shooters Shoot - One of the major factors in CSU s success this season will be adjustment to changing roles from prior seasons to the 2016-17 season. One of those roles will be filling the void beyond the three-point line left by the departure of Jamie Patrick, one of CSU s all-time top three-point shooters. - Ellen Nystrom and Elin Gustavsson, who will look to increase their scoring roles this season, shot.356 and.372 from beyond the arc, respectively, last season. Stine Austgulen took 68 three-point shots last season, the second-most on the team, while Hannah Tvrdy ranked third with 59 attempts and Sofie Tryggedsson placed fourth with 53. 2015-16 at a Glance - CSU put together one of the program s all-time best seasons in 2015-16, reaching the NCAA Tournament after a MW Tournament championship and its third straight MW regular-season championship. The Rams went 31-2 (.939) in 2015-16, and finished a perfect 18-0 in conference play. - With their 18-0 league record, the Rams became the first team in conference history to win the Mountain West outright in three consecutive seasons. CSU went 15-3 in each of 2013-14 and 2014-15 en route to respective regular season titles in each of those seasons. - The 2015-16 CSU squad is also the only team to this point to finish unbeaten in conference play since the Mountain West transitioned to an 18-game league schedule, and only the third team to accomplish that feat overall. The last team to finish unbeaten in MW play was Utah in 2007-08. No current MW member other than CSU has ever gone undefeated in league play. - The Rams MW Tournament championship hoisted them to their first NCAA Tournament berth since 2002. CSU also cracked the AP Top 25 in 2015-16, a feat the Rams had also last accomplished in 2002. - CSU s winning percentage of.939 last season was the best in program history. The Rams enter this season with active win streaks of 15 games at Moby Arena and 12 games in true road contests. - Ellen Nystrom became the second Ram all-time to be named MW Player of the Year (Gritt Ryder in 2014-15). Ryun Williams was named MW Coach of the Year, earning the award for his second time in four years. Up Next - The Colorado State women s basketball team will return home to Moby Arena on Wednesday, Nov. 23 for a meeting with the Adams State Grizzlies. The game is set to tip off at 2:30 p.m.. 5 2016-17 COLORADO STATE WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

COLORADO STATE 68, NO. 17/15 WASHINGTON 101 Last Time Out... Nov. 14, 2016 Seattle, Wash. Alaska Airlines Arena SEATTLE, Wash. - The Colorado State women's basketball team fell to the No. 17/15-ranked Washington Huskies, 101-68, in the second round of Preseason WNIT play on Monday night at Alaska Airlines Arena. Senior guard Ellen Nystrom, the reigning Mountain West Women's Basketball Player of the Week, once again paced the Rams with a 21-point performance. Nystrom, who is averaging 21.5 points per game over her first two games, added seven rebounds and was a perfect 3-for-3 from three-point range. The Lulea, Sweden native is 5-for-5 from the three-point arc to open the 2016-17 season. at 61-37, Gustavsson traded a three-point field goal and an old-fashioned three-point play with a Husky jumper to make it a 63-43 game with just under three minutes to go in the third quarter. However, UW once again closed a quarter on a run, finishing on a 12-4 run to take a 75-47 lead to the final frame. Washington grew its lead to as large as 32 with about seven minutes to play in the fourth quarter. CSU battled to close the gap to 25 on a pair of Tryggedsson three's and two Nystrom jumpers, but the Huskies ended up the victor by a score of 101-68. Sophomore guard Sofie Tryggedsson scored 14 points on 5-of-11 shooting, including 4-of-7 shooting from three-point range. Senior forward Elin Gustavsson added 11 points with five rebounds. Freshman guard Jordyn Edwards led scorers off the bench with seven points. The Rams started off hot from three-point range, jumping out to a sixpoint lead on early three's from Veronika Mirkovic and Tryggedsson. UW responded over the next four minutes, scoring four from the charity stripe, along with a pair of jumpers and a three to take an 11-6 lead. Gustavsson halted the 11-0 run with the Rams' third three-point basket of the period, and converted on a layup to knot the score up at 11 with 3:51 on the clock. However, Washington closed the opening frame on a 13-2 run and took a 24-13 lead to the second quarter. UW's Katie Collier opened the second quarter with a pair of baskets to continue the Husky run, but Nystrom and Edwards each scored by the 7:21 mark to cut the lead down to 11 at 28-17. Over the next three minutes, the Huskies scored 12 of the next 14 points to extend their lead to 40-19 and take their largest lead of the quarter. A Nystrom three-point play and Stine Austgulen three trimmed the lead to 15 at 40-25, but UW extended its lead to four by the break to take a 49-30 advantage to halftime. The Rams began the third quarter with a 7-2 run, reducing the UW lead to 14 on layups from Mirkovic and Nystrom, as well as on a three from Tryggedsson. Turnovers proved costly for the Rams at that point, as CSU committed four to spur an 8-0 UW run. We competed. We learned that there's a whole different speed. There's a whole different toughness. There's a whole different level out there that we've got to get to. If we take this message and use it right, we can become a better basketball team. It's game two and we went against a team that's just playing incredible basketball right now." On Ellen Nystrom's performance: "We got calmed down and had some positive possessions. Obviously we tried to play through Ellen (Nystrom), and I thought as the game went on she was much more aggressive and got some shots to fall. We shot the ball around her a little bit - it was nice to see Sofie (Tryggedsson) have a solid game. We can be better off of our bench, though. I want our bench to come in and give us a lift in production. We've got to get there." On the takeaways from today's game and the quick turnaround: "You don't want to lose, obviously. Our kids - they're trained to be sore losers. If we take this and use this for our benefit, we'll be better the next time out. We're going to play against a Big Ten opponent. We'll grow. We'll become a better basketball team because of this. Our minds will be in the right place and we'll move this thing forward from here." NOTES - Senior forward Elin Gustavsson's 11 points puts her just six points away from 1,000 for her career. - Freshman guard Jordyn Edwards recorded her first collegiate three-point field goal at the 2:40 mark in the second quarter. - Edwards also registered her first career free throws in the fourth quarter. - Freshman center Anna Dreimane recorded the first points of her collegiate career in the fourth quarter of Monday night's game. - CSU had only allowed more than 90 points once in the four previous years under Williams. That game was on March 14, 2014 in the Mountain West Tournament - a 95-92 win over Wyoming in triple overtime. - Before Monday night, CSU had only allowed more than 80 points in five games in the previous four years under Williams. Including tonight's game, CSU is 3-3 in those games. - Tonight marked the first time CSU has played on a Monday under head coach Ryun Williams. 1st - FG %: 7-15 46.7% 3FG %: 4-10 40.0% FT %: 6-6 100.0% 2nd: 9-17 52.9% 5-9 55.6% 2-4 50.0% 3rd: 7-13 53.8% 4-6 66.7% 8-8 100.0% 4th: 9-17 52.9% 3-5 60.0% 5-7 71.4% Game: 32-62 51.6% 16-30 53.3% 21-25 84.0% Deadball Rebounds 2 Officials: Melissa Barlow, In'Fini Robinson, Lorena Ahumada Technical fouls: Colorado State-None. RYUN WILLIAMS Head Coach Fifth Year South Dakota (1992) Ryun Williams, a veteran coach with over 20 years of experience, begins his fifth season as the head coach of the Colorado State women s basketball program. Under Williams guidance, the CSU women s basketball team has enjoyed one of its most successful stretches in program history. The Rams finished 31-2 (.939) in 2015-16, marking the second-highest single-season wins total in school history, as well as the most wins in a single season by any school in Mountain West Conference history. Williams coached the Rams to an NCAA Tournament appearance and national ranking in 2015-16, which were each firsts for the program since 2002. CSU s NCAA Tournament bid in 2015-16 also marked the program s third consecutive postseason appearance, building upon selections to the WNIT in 2013-14 as well as in 2014-15. CSU won the MW conference and regular season titles in 2015-16, and is the first program in conference history to win the regular season championship in three consecutive seasons. Williams 2015-16 squad finished Mountain West play with a perfect 18-0 record, marking only the third time in league history that a team has run the table in conference play and the only time a MW school has gone undefeated since the conference transitioned to an 18-game league schedule. The Rams won a program-record 28 straight games in 2015-16, shattering the previous school record of 19 consecutive victories. CSU enters 2016-17 with 15 straight wins at Moby Arena, the third-longest winning stretch at home in school history, as well as with a program-best 12 straight wins in true road contests. The Rams were undefeated at home for the entirety of the 2015-16 season, a feat that had only been accomplished previously by the Rams during the 1998-99 season. Williams earned his second MW Coach of the Year award in 2015-16, while Ellen Nystrom was named MW Player of the Year that same season. Nystrom was Williams second MW Player of the Year, joining Gritt Ryder, who earned the award in 2014-15. The Rams went 11-19 (.367) in Williams first season, but quickly turned into a perennial contender, winning back-to-back Mountain West Championships with a 25-8 (.758) record in 2013-14 and a 23-8 (.741) mark in 2014-15. The improvement from Williams first to second seasons ranked as the third-best turnaround in the country in 2013-14, and is the best in program history. Following the team s strides in his second season, Williams was awarded with the 2014 Russell Athletic/WBCA NCAA Division I Regional Coach of the Year award. Tasked with repairing what had been nearly a decade of sub-par results, Williams brought eight new faces to the Rams 2013-14 roster in his second season at the helm. The team quickly realized it had an irrefutable chemistry, which resulted in win streaks of eight and 10 games and included a stretch of 17 wins in 18 games. CSU skyrocketed to the top of the 2013-14 Mountain West standings and won its first regular season championship in 12 years. The Rams, who were picked to finish seventh in 2013-14 Mountain West preseason poll, more than doubled their win total from the previous season to produce their best record in 13 years as well as the third-most victories in program history. The team earned a program-record 10 all-conference awards between six players, and Williams earned his first MW Coach of the Year honor. The Rams also received their first postseason invitation in 10 years with its first of two trips to the WNIT under Williams. In 20 seasons as a head coach at various schools, Williams has compiled an impressive 402-227 career record, with stops at South Dakota (2008-12), Wayne State College (1998-2008) and Sheridan College (1995-98). Williams basketball teams have recorded nine campaigns with 20 or more victories, seven postseason berths and three conference championships. A native of Gillette, Wyo., Williams earned his associate s degree from Sheridan in 1990, his bachelor s degree from South Dakota in 1992 and his master s degree from South Dakota in 1997. Williams and his wife, Lyndy, have two daughters, Natalie and Emily. HEAD COACHING EXPERIENCE Year School Record (%) Conf. Rec. Conf.
