IN THE WIND P24 TOMAC ON THE MEND GEICO Honda rider Eli Tomac underwent a successful surgery on his left shoulder Thursday, June 4, and is on the road to recovery following his crash on May 30 at the Thunder Valley National MX in Lakewood, Colorado. According to the team, doctors at the Steadman Clinic in Vail, Colorado, successfully repaired damaged tendons in Tomac s left shoulder. The surgery for Tomac s right shoulder, which needs a less-complicated repair, has been scheduled to take place in two weeks. Tomac already has begun physical therapy to aid in the immediate recovery of the injury. A complete recovery is expected for both shoulders later this fall. Eli Tomac underwent surgery to repair his torn rotator cuff. He will have surgery again in a couple of weeks on his other shoulder that was dislocated. FLAT TRACK FINALE PAIRS WITH SUPERPRESTIGIO IN LAS VEGAS AMA Pro Racing has announced that the final of the AMA Pro Flat Track will be held at The Orleans Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas on Friday, November 20. The AMA final will be followed by the first running of the Superprestigio of the Americas on November 21, on a circuit designed by former seven time AMA Pro Flat Track Champion, Chris Carr. We re pleased to be ending our season in America s home for entertainment and in conjunction with such a prestigious event, said Michael Gentry, Chief Operating Officer of AMA Pro Racing. Fans can expect incredible excitement both on and off the race track as we crown the next GNC2 and Grand National Champions. The Superprestigio event, held in Spain at the end of the past two racing seasons, has seen top riders like Marc Marquez and Bradley Smith go head-to-head against AMA champions Brad Baker and Jared Mees, however the American version will be slightly different, according to promoter Steve McLaughlin. Like many things in the states, we re going to do some things a little differently with the Superprestigio of the Americas, said Steve McLaughlin, CEO of SMI. We re not just going to feature road racers and dirt trackers, this is going to be an invitational event for champions and top riders from all forms of motorcycle racing throughout the Americas. There might even be some interest from Supercross, Motocross, Freestyle, Supermotard and Speedway riders, and we would certainly welcome their participation. It s all about broadening the appeal base of the sport, and we re real excited about this opportunity. The news of the Superprestigio event comes off the back of the announcement that the Pomona Half-Mile will not be run on October 10 due to the permanent closure of the track.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY BECCA LIVINGSTON IN THE WIND HONDA RC213V-S ON SHOW IN JAPAN One of the most eagerly awaited machines of recent memory made a non-descript debut in Japan last week, when the Honda RC213V-S was spotted getting a run at the Asama Hill Climb in the hands of HRC factory test rider, Hiroshi Aoyama. It s been three long years since Honda announced its intention to build a replica of its MotoGP race-winning weapon, and the intervening years have done nothing to distill a frothing public s appetite for a machine that is expected to sell out before it even reaches production. Marc Marquez made the RC213V-S s public debut when he rode onto the stage at the Milan Show last November in an all-carbon clad machine, and it appears the machine Aoyama rode is one nearing production with news HRC is set to show the machine to the world s motorcycling press at this weekend s Catalunya MotoGP, where Aoyama is P32 expected to demo the machine. Cycle News Alan Cathcart will be there and next week we ll give you a full rundown of the most eagerly awaited machine of 2015. PROJECT 156 DEBUTS AT PIKES PEAK Victory Motorcycles Pikes Peak International Hill Climb machine, dubbed Project 156, has made its public debut on the Pikes Peak mountain at Colorado in the hands of Cycle World journalist, Don Canet. Project 156 is a collaboration between Victory Motorcycle and Roland Sands Design, using a prototype twin-cylinder engine and RSD-built chassis. Victory is remaining tight-lipped about the machine s specification, however the engine is too large to run in the Heavyweight division and will run under the Exhibition UTV regulations. Canet put the machine through its paces at the weekend, using both top and bottom sections of the mountain. We focused a lot on fuel calibration for the altitude, and we re working closely with our MoTeC engineer to get the right map Canet in action on the mountain the Project 156 machine has suffered teething issues but is coming on strong. for the mountain, Canet said. The test started out slow on Saturday and we got some dyno time later in the afternoon in a workshop in Colorado which made a big difference to the machine s performance. By Sunday the bike was starting to run really well and we managed to set a competitive time on the bottom half of the mountain, so I m really getting excited to get back there this week for some more development time. I can feel the potential of the machine, so some more dyno time and more runs will be very beneficial. Canet and the Victory team will head back to the mountain for a three-day test starting this Friday, June 12. CN PHOTOGRAPHY BY KYOICHI NAKAMURA

VOL. 52 ISSUE 23 JUNE 9, 2015 P41 RENET, BELINO AND REMES RULE GP OF GREECE It was a good weekend for Husqvarna racers at the Grand Prix of Greece where round four of the 2015 FIM Enduro World Championship got underway in Serres, Greece. The Bel-Ray Husqvarna Factory Racing team claimed two double victories with Pela Renet in the E2 division and Matthias Belino in the E3 class. The team s dominant performance was a breath of fresh air, especially for Renet. The Frenchman has struggled with crashes this season, and had more than one victory slip through his fingers in 2015. But the Frenchman remained consistent and coolheaded throughout the long and demanding enduro tests. Despite Renet s big win in Greece, Antoine Meo still holds the points lead. A pair of second-place finishes allowed the KTM rider to maintain a strong position in the championship, though the win may be just what THR MOTORSPORTS TOPS BAJA 500 Although their rider of record was in Utah with a broken neck, collarbone, hand and foot, Ricky Brabec s team took advantage of the excused absence rule in SCORE and still managed to put together a winning race effort. Max Eddy Jr., Ian Young and Justin Morgan piloted the factory-supported THR Motorsports Monster Energy Kawasaki KX450F to the overall motorcycle win at the 47th Bud Light SCORE Baja 500. Brabec s team was set to do battle once again with the Ox Motorsports Honda of Colton Udall, Renet needed to jumpstart the second half of his season. I needed this result, Renet commented. To win both days is great, not only for my championship but also for my confidence. Twice this year in Chile and Spain I was leading and crashed. And that really knocks you. It s great to win. Matthias Bellino continued to dominate in the E3 class. On both days the Husky rider bested Aigar Leok and Matt Phillips, who finished second and third, respectively. On Saturday Bellino s win came due to a penalty suffered by Phillips, but on Sunday, Bellino had the speed and the confidence to win straight up. The GP of Greece was really all about the enduro test, Bellino explained. Two wins as we pass the halfway point of the series is really good for me and the team. After two of five stages, Alessandro Botturi of the factory Yamaha team leads the way on the rocky and scenic Mediterranean island with Red Bull KTM s Marc Coma in second and HRC s Jacopo Cerutti in third. HRC s stalwart rally competitor Paulo Goncalves also got out to a good start in the opening stage, as well at the motocross-style prologue, but took a dive in the overall standings after a disappointing day two the longest stage of the rally. His loss was Botturi s gain as the Yamaha rider moved into the lead. Another gain for Botturi was an overnight penalty of 15 minutes for Pedrero. After a dusty first stage, riders faced a downpour on day two when a storm blew in during the latter part of the day. Goncalves had opened a big lead over the field in the morning, but when the storm blew in, the limited visibility caused him to take a wrong turn, which ended up costing him nearly 20 minutes. Everything was going great until kilometer 40 of the special when the torrential rain began, Goncalves explained. I wasn t able to see, but I didn t take off the goggles and missed a note in the roadbook. JUNE 4, 2015 CIRCUIT OF THE AMERICAS/AUSTIN, TEXAS FLAT TRACK X GAMES HARLEY-DAVIDSON FLAT TRACK P66 BY ANDREA WILSON PHOTOGRAPHY BY DAVE HOENIG AND ANDREA WILSON Flat track racing has been around for a long time. And for those die-hard fans who love it, flat track racing has always been cool; it s only just recently that it s become hot. People are starting to catch on to one of America s oldest forms of motorcycle racing. That s in part to a lot of hype surrounding the sport of late, largely from outside sources top MotoGP stars like Valentino Rossi and Marc Marquez; and more recently, Supercrosser Chad Reed. To add to that A-List athlete boost, the sport finally got the opportunity to take center stage in front of a mainstream audience the X Games perfect platform to spread the word about flat track racing, because the ESPN made for TV sporting competition puts an emphasis on the extreme. Pitting what one could argue as the best flat track racers in the world on twins with no front brakes on a 3/8 of a mile track is pretty extreme, THE X-FACTOR

VOL. 52 ISSUE 23 JUNE 9, 2015 P67 especially when you throw in the fact that it was a track that was not so flat (the rear wheels were bouncing more than a hyperactive kid with a sugar rush in a bouncy house). While it wasn t optimum conditions for a flat track race; it was riveting. And in the end it still highlighted the best parts about the sport close racing and a group of talented racers not afraid to hang it all out. It also was a display of the classic roller coaster drama of racing. Las Vegas Harley-Davidson s Jared Mees the reigning AMA Grand National Champion had a perfect race until a half a lap left in the race when disaster struck and a mechanical had him going from a shoe- The fans were on their feet as AMA Pro Flat Track regulars put on a fantastic display of racing in rough conditions at the inaugural X Games Harley-Davidson Flat Track event. Briefly... Back-to-back Daytona 200 winner Danny Eslick made his second flat track appearance this year (Springfield Mile being his first). The road racer has returned to his dirt track roots for some select races and is starting to feel right at home, qualifying 10 th. Unfortunately for Eslick, he ended up on the ground in his heat, forcing him to try and make it through in the LCQ and ultimately was unable to transfer to the main. Coming from the starting gate it s quite dusty and just dry marbles and that gets all drug up across the groove, Eslick said. So everybody was kind of skating it off and running wide. I had everything slowed down and was turned and I m not sure who it was somebody T-boned me and kind of spun the thing around. Went from probably making it I would say fairly easy out of the heat race to ending up in the dirt and having to come from the last chance. Definitely not the way you wanted to come and spend the X Games but we re here. I qualified 10th fastest and that just makes me want to come out and do a few more and maybe get a little payback out there. For Eslick two races are not enough, he s hoping to get out there for some more. So has he caught the dirt track bug again? I never lost it, he said. My priorities were on the asphalt and just the way things are now it will kind of work out for me to go play in the dirt a little bit. AMA PRO FLAT TRACK STARS MADE THEIR X GAMES DEBUT IN SPECTACULAR FASHION WITH CLOSE RACING AND PLENTY OF DRAMA Initially the thought was that Jared Mees mechanical misfortune was a broken chain, but that wasn t the case. As a result, Crosley Radio s Bryan Smith the man with a hot streak in the AMA Pro Flat Track Championship with back-to-back wins on the Mile held off Briggs Auto s Sammy Halbert to take the inaugural X Games Harley-Davidson Flat Track win. Joining the two Kawasaki riders was 2014 AMA Grand National Champion Brad Baker on the Harley-Davidson Screamin Eagle Factory machine. A NEW X-PERIENCE The flat track world was pumped to be on the big stage kicking off the 2015 Austin X Games in the sport s big debut in front of a primetime national audience on ESPN. It was uncharted territory, though. A new track, a little shorter than normal and the addition of a motocross-style starting gate the riders weren t exactly sure what to expect. And then Mother Nature decided it was time to unleash record level water from rainstorms leading up to the event, which complicated the preparation of the track. It was definitely very exciting, Mees said after the event. None of us really knew what to expect as far as the track and the starting gate and all that stuff. There was a lot of talk about the surface being more of like a cushioned limestone, and then it was back to clay, and then we all knew that they got the big heavy downpour of rain. We heard rumors that it was under water. When we got there it was a little different than what I think a lot of us expected. The track was really, Fans from our neighbor up north cheered on Canadian flat track racer Doug Lawrence.

But different from the norm isn t necessarily a bad thing. It was just a little different than what we usually run week in and week out which made it cool because that s what X Games is about, Mees added. You look at the events that X Games has and they string a lot of different stuff together to make it unique. It was cool. It was different. So yes, it was not ideal racing Briefly... just no acceleration there, Mees said. At first it felt like the chain fell off but what happened was the knockoff that holds the sprocket on came undone and lost the drive. After a dominant performance in the second heat race, it looked like TOBC Doc Henry Smalls Racing s Jake Johnson would be the man to beat in the final. Unfortunately Johnson didn t get the all-important holeshot and finished fifth. A little disappointing for the former AMA Grand National champ, but he was happy to be there in the first place after his twins ride fell through before the first race at Springfield a few weeks ago, forcing him to scramble for a ride for the X Games. I got to thank Doc Henry Smalls, Johnson said. It was his personal, basically trophy that sits at Colin s Boot Camp [Texas Tornado Boot Camp] and he was nice enough to let me ride it. I got down here last Saturday night, and the bike hadn t started in like two years. So me and Joe P [fellow Texas Tornado Boot Camp instructor Joe Prussiano], we did some work on it, shined it up and got it running. I m disappointed, I definitely wanted to be on the box, but for the limited amount of time and being last minute and kind of I guess, I could say unemployed at the moment for a ride, I m happy with it. The rest of the TOBC crew were on hand to help Johnson for the event, including the World champ himself Colin Edwards. Riders and fans alike left the event pretty happy. And as it was a night of great, close racing, many were happy. I felt like the event ran really well, Halbert said. Obviously they had a big challenge with the flooding, but no matter what, put all of us out there on a dirt track and we re going to put on some sort of a show. So I think it was really cool different racing out of

It was an awesome first-year event, said Tim Reed, X Games Vice President. It was great to have the bikes, athletes and everyone here at X Games Austin. I don t think there needs to be a whole lot of changes to the program. Just come back and do it again and hopefully the track s a little more racy but either way it s good. It s safe to say that pretty much everyone recognized the importance that the event had on the sport. It s huge, Baker said about the event. It put us in the spotlight with a lot of other great types of sports and in an international spotlight as well. I think we got a lot of other top athletes that are digging flat track now and it seems like when you ve got fans that follow somebody that thinks that they re cool they ll catch on to whatever they like. I think a lot of people had a little bit of an eye opener of what flat track is. I think it did something huge for our sport. All in all I think they put on a great show for the fans. It obviously wasn t an ideal racetrack, but an outsider looking in, I think it was a good show for this venue. I think it looked really good on TV so I think it was a very good promotional deal for our sport. The winner, Smith, perhaps was the happiest of the lot. For what we had to work with the rain and the new track, it was as good as it could be, said Smith. Everybody worked their asses off. My hat s off to everybody at the Circuit of Americas, the crew on the flat track, ESPN. Really if this would have been any other type of flat track we wouldn t have been racing. That showed because the track

JUNE 4, 2015 CIRCUIT OF THE AMERICAS/AUSTIN, TEXAS FLAT TRACK X GAMES HARLEY-DAVIDSON FLAT TRACK P72 wasn t the best but we did get a race on TV for a gold medal. I m obviously the happiest about that. THE MEDALISTS For Smith there was no better way to represent his sponsors (his newest sponsor included Kid Rock s Bad Ass Brew and Made In Detroit clothing line) with a gold medal at the inaugural X Games event, but it wasn t an easy task and involved some luck. I almost crashed a couple times, Smith said. I m like, no, you re on the podium, you re going to get a medal. I just kind of tried to stay cool, but it was so hard because you had to be so cautious. It was so easy to over-ride and as soon as you got the thing sideways you were hitting a rut and about going over the handlebars. I was just trying to keep my wheels in line, really. But it was so hard because the bikes are so powerful on this little track. Mees had checked out and in the challenging conditions Smith was happy to leave with second. I was content with second and I d seen Mees kind of slow up and he looked down. It was like a mirage. I just grabbed a handful of gas and luckily just squeaked up the inside of him and got luckily close to him because he was right on (Above) There was no shortage of excitement three wide on a short 3/8 of a mile track. the groove. Very fortunate that nothing happened there with him breaking and I got by him clean. I was thinking, oh man, I got the lead, oh man, somebody s going to stuff me going into turn three for the gold if I don t get in there. So I tried to get in there hot but not blow the groove. Then it was just like, wait a minute, I m going to the checkered flag. I just won the X Games. It was just amazing. The man that could ve pipped him in the end was second place finisher Halbert. Halbert was nipping on Smith s heels for a while,

VOL. 52 ISSUE 23 JUNE 9, 2015 P73 but just could not get by him. I just couldn t quite figure out what to do with him [Smith], Halbert said. It was like the corners were so tight you had to wait for him to get on the gas until you could get on the gas. And then I just couldn t quite make it happen. The way the track was you had to really try and ride mellow and not give it too much gas, but I really wanted it so I was kind of finding the balance between going for it and taking it easy. So I did the best I could. Tried to stay on his back wheel and wait for a mistake but it wasn t there. So happy to walk away from the inaugural Flat Track X Games with a medal. Also getting lucky was the heat race one winner Baker, who inherited that final podium spot with Mees misfortune. Although the factory rider had a great start to the final, he just didn t have the right setup on track that had changed from his win earlier that evening in what was perhaps the best race of the evening. To bring home the bronze and be on the podium at the inaugural X Games Flat Track was pretty dang sweet really, Baker said. Bad luck for Jared [Mees] and kind of good luck for me. It was definitely a heartbreaker for him. MEES MISFORTUNE A half a lap that s how close Mees was to taking home the gold and going down in the history books as the inaugural X Games Harley-Davidson Flat Track winner. That s the way of racing sometimes. And while the reigning champ has been around long enough to know that, it doesn t really make it sting less. He came to Austin to win, and came just short with a bit of bad luck. It still hasn t really completely sunk in to get over it quite yet, Mees said. It was basically half a lap to go to get gold and ended up dead last. Was ex- It looked like Mees had it in the bag.

JUNE 4, 2015 CIRCUIT OF THE AMERICAS/AUSTIN, TEXAS FLAT TRACK X GAMES HARLEY-DAVIDSON FLAT TRACK P74 Sammy Halbert (7) made his way past Baker (6) and chased down Smith, going home with a silver medal for his efforts. tremely, extremely disappointing. Probably the most disappointing race for me ever of my career, I would almost have to say. To have that opportunity, and I kind of made that my goal at the beginning of the year when I heard about this. Really had my sights set on it and really had it in my heart to win that race. So it was absolute heartbreak, especially after running a flawless race and dominating the field. You may only have these opportunities once in a lifetime, Mees said. You just never know what tomorrow s going to bring and to race a race like that and feel absolutely flawless. A friend of mine came up and she said, man, it was just going to be too easy, wasn t it? I said, you know what? You re exactly right, it was. I got the holeshot, was basically just riding around my own race, pulling away flawlessly, bike was perfect. Everything was going so good, so easy it felt like, and of course something has to happen like that. I hope more than anything I can come back and not win the gold one more time, but a few more times. It s unfortunate, but spilled milk is spilled milk. You got to wipe it up and just roll on. In the end Mees has bigger fish to fry, staying on top of the competition to defend his title in the remaining 12 rounds of the AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National Championship. Hopefully all my bad luck s out of the way now and put it past us, he said. There s a couple races out there I really want to win bad so I ll try to put my sights on those. CN FINAL 1.
