Illini Head Coach Bill Self Bill Self is in his first season at the helm of the Illini program following three years at Tulsa where he earned National Coach of the Year honors from the John &Nellie Wooden Foundation and The Sporting News in 2000. He led Tulsa to a 32-5 record and into a Regional Final appearance last season. Prior to his stop at Tulsa, Self spent four years at Oral Roberts where he built a program from 6-21 his first season to 22-6 in his fourth year. A 1985 graduate of Oklahoma State, Self has worked under Larry Brown at Kansas and Leonard Hamilton and Eddie Sutton at Oklahoma State. Self Career Record Oral Roberts, 1994-97........56-53 Tulsa, 1998-2000............74-27 Illinois, present..............13-4 Total...............143-84 (.630) Final Shots Triple-Double Update: After reviewing Illinois basketball box scores, Mark Smith was found to have the first recorded Illini triple-double when he scored 18 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and handed out 10 assists in a 67-57 win over Minnesota on Feb. 1, 1979. Sergio McClain s performance against Michigan is the second triple-double in Illini basketball history. Illinois assistant coach Rob Judson played in the first tripledouble game in 1979 and celebrated his 42nd birthday on the second. Rejection Notice:After blocking a total of 37 shots (3.1 avg.) over the first 12 games of the season, the Fighting Illini have totaled 38 (7.6 avg.) in the last five games. Illinois season average of 4.4 blocks is the team s highest since 1987 when the Illini averaged 4.7 blocks per game. High-Scoring: Illinois is averaging 79.4 points per game, the highest Illini scoring average since 1994 when Illinois averaged 84.0 points per game. Self Defense: After 17 games, opponents are shooting just 38.0 percent from the field. That is the lowest opponent shooting percentage since the 1955-56 season when Illini opponents shot 35.2 percent from the field. Board Work: Illinois average of 41.6 rebounds per game is the team s highest average since 1978 when the Illini averaged 42.0 rebounds per game. Game Time Change - Penn State Game time for the Jan. 20 Illinois home game against PennState has been changed to 2 p.m. The Presidential Inauguration scheduled for 11 a.m. that day has caused numerous scheduling conflicts for the ESPN Plus network affiliates planning to carry the regional syndication doubleheader that day. To accomodate the network affiliates, games times were shifted 30 minutes. Last Time Out : vs. Michigan Illinois posted its biggest victory over the Wolverines since 1960 with an 80-51 blow-out at the Assembly Hall. With leading scorer Frank Williams sitting out due to injury, senior Sergio McClain stole the show with the first triple-double by an Illini in 21 years when he scored 10 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and handed out 11 assists. Brian Cook led the Illini with 17 points while grabbing seven rebounds. Damir Krupalija scored 10 points and grabbed six rebounds in 15 minutes off the bench. Williams Comes Up Big In Crunch Time Frank Williams has made a habit of picking up his level of play in crunch time. So far this season, he is averaging 5.1 points in the first half of games and 10.2 points in the second half (including overtime). His shooting percentage has also improved in the second half from 36 percent to 43 percent. He has scored in double figures eight times in the second half alone, while reaching double figures in the first half just once. His top efforts have come against some of Illinois toughest opponents. In the second half he has scored 14 against UNLV, 16 vs. Maryland, 18 vs. Arizona, 13 vs. Duke, 17 vs. Seton Hall, 12 vs. Missouri, 16 against Minnesota and 16 against Ohio State. polls after being No. 1 for several weeks, plays at Illinois on Feb. 6. Facing Two #1 s in a Week There s a reason why many people point to Illinois schedule as the toughest in the nation. The Illini have already played five teams ranked in the Top 10, including a pair of No. 1s. This marks the first time ever that the Illini have played two different No. 1 teams in the same season, and even more impressive, those games came less than a week apart. Illinois fell to then-no. 1 Arizona, 79-76, in the championship of the Maui Invitational on Nov. 22. Just six days later, the Illini faced No. 1 Duke in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, falling by just one point 78-77. Griffin Strong in the Post Senior center Marcus Griffin has turned in quite a performance so far with his dominating inside play. He scored a career-high 27 points and grabbed seven rebounds in the victory over Minnesota Jan. 3. He scored 21 points, grabbed six rebounds and blocked five shots Dec. 29 against Illinois-Chicago. He posted perhaps his best game at Illinois with 24 points and career-high 13 rebounds in the overtime victory over Seton Hall Dec. 9, and he posted a double-double against Missouri with 10 points and 11 boards and had 11 points and five rebounds vs. Texas. Griffin had 16 points and eight rebounds in the win over Texas Southern and responded with another 16-point outing while coming just one rebound shy of a double-double with nine boards against No. 1 Duke. The doubledouble that eluded him against the Blue Devils happened on Dec. 2 at Kansas State, when Griffin scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the victory. Game 1 #8 Illinois 86 Maine 57 Nov. 17, 2000 Assembly Hall, Champaign, Ill. Practice? Who needs practice? After sitting out of drills for a week with a bruised elbow, Sergio McClain came off the bench to score 16 points and grab nine rebounds as No. 8 Illinois opened the season with an 86-57 victory over Maine. McClain said he wanted to inaugurate new coach Bill Self with a victory at Assembly Hall, and make a good impression. He did both. The Illini gave Self his first win at Illinois with dominating play inside and feisty defense, trademarks of his successful teams at Tulsa. Illini center Marcus Griffin added 15 points as the Illini pounded the ball inside. The Black Bears shot 35 percent and committed 27 turnovers for the game. McClain scored six points during a 19-5 run that ended with the Illini ahead 45-23. The Illini led 46-29 at the half and did not change the plan. Short jumpers, layups and tip-ins helped the Illini outscore the Bears 16-6 to start the second half. Maine got 18 points and 10 points from Huggy Dye, whose performance came in a homecoming of sorts. Dye played high school basketball in nearby Danville. Julian Dunkley added 14 points for Maine. Self was happy with the defense and his starting backcourt of Cory Bradford and Frank Williams playing turnover-free ball. Bradford added 11 points and Brian Cook had 10 for Illinois. "I was pretty nervous," Self said. "But the first one you always remember." Frank Williams scored 22 points and the eighthranked Illini beat UNLV 74-69 in the opening round of the Maui Invitational. The Illini advanced to Tuesday's semifinals to play No. 6 Maryland, which beat Louisville 95-73 in the first round. Self didn't have a very good start in the second game at his new school. UNLV (1-1) had a 28-14 lead in the first half by making five of its first seven shots from 3- point range. Illinois (2-0) used runs of 9-0 and 11-0 to get back in the game, and it was tied at 36 at halftime. The Illini took advantage of UNLV's lack of depth and foul trouble - four Runnin' Rebels fouled out - to take command. Williams' jumper with 9:11 left gave Illinois the lead for good at 56-54. He hit the game's biggest shot, a driving jumper with the shot clock expiring that gave the Illini a 68-59 lead. He then made four free throws for a 72-62 lead with 48 seconds left. Williams also had six assists and five steals. Marcus Griffin had 15 points for Illinois, while Brian Cook had 12 points and 14 rebounds. Reserve Sean Harrington made all five of his 3-point shots and scored a career-high 17 as Illinois beat Texas Southern 86-57. Harrington sank three straight 3-pointers midway through the second half to give Illinois an insurmountable 30-point lead. Illinois (4-1) got solid contributions from most of its regulars, too, including 16 points and eight rebounds from center Marcus Griffin. Illinois used a 13-0 run to move ahead 18-6, but Chris Miller's shooting kept Texas Southern (0-3) in the game. Miller's fourth 3-pointer got the Tigers within 20-16 with 10:29 left in the half. That was the closest they got. Griffin and Robert Archibald combined for 13 points in the paint as Illinois closed the half with a 19-6 run for a 49-29 lead. The Illini stretched the lead to 70-40 with 11 minutes left on Harrington's hot shooting. The Tigers didn't let them pile on. Miller stopped getting open 3-point chances, so the Tigers tried to go inside when Illinois switched to a smaller lineup. Texas Southern hit 11 free throws during a 23-8 run to draw within 78-63 with 4:11 remaining. Miller finished with 18 points and seven rebounds for Texas Southern. Ricky Bennett added 13 points and Steve Hoyer 11. But the Tigers shot just 34 percent from the field and managed just seven assists against the Illini defense that has kept every opponent under 45 percent shooting from the field. Turnovers were the deciding factor as No. 9 Duke lost to undefeated and No.1 Duke (6-0) 78-77 in the marquee matchup in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge. While the Illini held All-American Shane Battier in check, allowing him just 11 points and 5 rebounds in 39 minutes, Duke s Jason Williams (23 points) and Mike Dunleavy (21 points) matched career highs for the Blue Devils. Frank Williams led Illinois (4-2) with 19 points and Marcus Griffin was a factor in the paint with 16. But Illinois was plagued by a season-high 26 turnovers, overshadowing their tremendous work on the boards, outrebounding Duke 42-27 for the game. Sergio McClain led the assault on the glass with 11 rebounds and Griffin added nine. Duke built up a 77-68 with under three minutes left when the Illini made a late rally. Trailing 78-74, Williams was fouled on a three point attempt with 3.5 seconds left. He made the first two to make it a two point game and attempted to miss the third one to give the Illini a chance at an offensive rebound basket. However his final free throw banked in, and Illinois was forced to foul with 0.8 showing on the clock. After missing the first, Duke missed the second free throw inentionally to prevent Illinois from inbounding the ball. Lucas Johnson grabbed the miss and fired a fulllength shot that missed as time expired.
