Jays vs. Royals The Royals opened the season work in exciting fashion, plating four in the ninth win in the first of six meetings with the Jays... KC trails the all-time series with Toronto by a 188-198 mark, but possesses a 1-2-90 advantage in Kauffman Stadium...Kansas City has won eight of the last 11 regular season meetings in The K. Date Site Score WP LP Att. 6/23 KC W, 5-4 Soria Loup *38,848 6/24 KC 6/25 KC 9/19 @ Tor 9/20 @ Tor 9/21 @ Tor WALKING OFF TO.500--The Royals dug quite the hole to open the year, losing 20 of their first 30 games to start things off 10 games below.500...the long climb back to even the slate was culminated last night with a 4-run ninth inning, capped by Whit Merrifield s 2-out, 2-run double into the left field corner to stake KC to its third walk-off win of the year, 5-4...Merrifield, who about this time seven years ago delivered the walk-off hit that ended the final College World Series in Omaha s Rosenblatt Stadium by staking South Carolina to a win, recorded his first big league walk-off with the double in the ninth...trailing 4-1 entering the final frame, the Royals used a one-out double from Salvador Perez, then following a second out, a walk to Brandon Moss and then 2-out hits from Alcides Escobar and Alex Gordon set the stage for Merrifield s thriller which brought the sellout gathering to his feet...jakob Junis worked the first 6.1 innings allowing two runs, but was extricated from the hook of a second straight loss by the ninth inning heroics, giving KC 10 wins in the last 12 games. A FRANCHISE FIRST--The sellout crowd of 38,848 witnessed a first in the 49-year history of Royals baseball, as Kansas City rallied from a three+ run deficit with two outs in ninth inning to win on a 9-inning walk-off...the last time KC rallied from three+ runs down and two outs in the ninth in non walk-off fashion was August 23, 1988 in old Arlington Stadium, when the Royals ambushed the Rangers for eight 2-out runs to turn a 7-3 deficit into an 11-7 win...in the ballpark today is one of the contributors of that inning, as current Jays broadcaster Pat Tabler actually made the second out in the frame, then later walked in his second plate appearance of the inning. BETTER LATE THAN NEVER--The three wins on this homestand have seen some late-inning magic by the Kansas City offense, starting on Monday night when the Royals plated a pair of seventh inning tallies to break a 2-2 tie and defeat the Red Sox, 4-2...Wednesday s series winning knock came courtesy of an eighth inning grand slam by Salvador Perez, flipping a 4-2 deficit into an eventual 6-4 win...then there was last night when KC scored four 2-out runs in the ninth inning after entering the frame down 4-1...it was the 21st comeback win for the Royals this year and the first in 30 tries when trailing after eight innings...the last time Kansas City pulled one out when trailing after eight was last September 24 when Detroit held a 4-2 lead entering the ninth and the Royals rallied for a 7-4 win. SOLID WORK IN JUNE--With consecutive come-from-behind wins, the Royals are now 14-6 in June, the best mark to this point among all American League clubs and the second best winning pct. in the Majors (.700)...the month began with KC taking two of three from the Indians here, then splitting a 4-game set against Houston, before going on the road to win series in San Diego (2-1), San Francisco (2-0) and Anaheim (3-1)...the Royals then returned home to take two of three from the Red Sox to open this stay, followed by last night s thriller...since the month began, the Royals are third in the A.L. in ERA (3.94)...KC started June eight games under.500 (22-30). ACE 30 REMEMBERING YO--The morning of January 22, 2017 will always be remembered as one of the most tragic days in franchise history when word was received that pitcher Yordano Ventura had his life cut short due to a car accident in his native Dominican Republic...signed as a 17-year old in 2008, the fireballing right-hander compiled a 38-31 during his abbreviated Major League career...among many highlights, Ace will be most remembered for blanking the San Francisco Giants over 7.0 innings in Game #6 of the 2014 World Series to force a seventh and deciding game, while pitching with a heavy heart himself due to the untimely passing of his friend Oscar Tavares...to honor the late Ventura, all uniforms in 2017 will be adorned with the ACE 30 patch. TODAY S STARTING PITCHERS: RHP Marco Estrada (4-5, 4.98) vs. LHP Jason Vargas (10-3, 2.27) 2016 2015 Career 2017 2016 Career Marco Estrada vs. Royals - 1-1 1-1 Major League Record 4-5 (4.98 ERA) 9-9 49-48 Jason Vargas vs. Blue Jays - - 2-3 Major League Record 10-3 (2.27 ERA) 0-0 77-73 JASON VARGAS, the Major League co-leader in wins, makes his 15th start of the season and 211th of his career (231st appearance) today he faces Toronto for the ninth time, first since 2014...the 34-year-old southpaw is in the final season of a four-year contract he signed with Kansas City on November 22, 2013. WIN STREAK HITS A HANDFUL--Jason knocked off his old club last Sunday afternoon to win his fifth consecutive start with a 7-3 triumph in Anaheim...he scattered eight hits and allowed three runs over 6.0 innings to become the second Royal in as many seasons to win five-straight starts, joining Danny Duffy, who did it last August 1-21... Vargas surrendered a pair of first-inning runs, but recovered to hold the Halos to a single tally over his final five frames...it marked his team-leading 10th quality start of the season and fourth in his last six outings...over his five-start winning streak, Jason has posted a 2.20 ERA (8 ER in 32.2 IP), with seven walks and 19 strikeouts. TAKE ME TO YOUR LEADERS--Vargy enters today tied with Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw for the Major League lead in victories (10)...he became the fourth Royals pitcher to be the first in the Majors to 10 wins, joining Bret Saberhagen (1987), David Cone (1994) and Kevin Appier (1995)...along with his victories, Jason is also second in the American League in ERA (2.27), tied for fifth in quality starts (10), fifth in fewest walks per 9.0 innings (2.06) and eighth in WHIP (1.13)...the last Royals pitcher to have an ERA lower than Vargas current 2.27 mark as late as June 24 (min. 12 starts) was Zack Greinke, who had a 1.90 ERA during his 2009 Cy Young campaign. RISPY BUSINESS--Opponents are batting.243 overall (79-for-325) against Jason this season, however that number drops to a.183 average (11-for-60) with runners in scoring position, the fourth-lowest mark in the American League...he s also held opposing hitters to the fourth-lowest slugging pct. (.283) with RISP. DAYTIME DOMINANCE--Today marks Jason s fifth afternoon outing of the season and he enters 3-0 with a 1.82 ERA (5 ER in 24.2 IP), good for third among A.L. hurlers who have pitched more 18.0 innings during the day...it s a reverse from his previous career trends as prior to this season, he was 14-26 in day games. THE COMEBACK--Vargas made three starts last September, including his first appearance in the Majors since July 21, 2015 according to Jon Roegele s Tommy John surgery database at The Hardball Times, Vargas return from Tommy John surgery (409 days) was the fastest by a Major League starting pitcher since Gavin Floyd (363 days) in 2014 in 17 starts since his return, Vargas is 10-3 with a 2.27 ERA (25 ER in 99.1 IP) and a.236 opponents avgerage (87-for-369). VS. TORONTO--He s 2-3 with a 5.32 ERA (27 ER in 45.2 IP) in eight career starts vs. Toronto...he s won his last two decisions, the most recent on May 30, 2014, a 6-1 victory by allowing one run over 6.0 innings at Rogers Centre...despite an 11-21 all-time record against AL East foes, Vargy has a 3.98 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP in those outings...that includes a 1-2 mark with a 4.76 ERA and a.222 opponents average (14-for-63) this season. HOME AT THE K --Jason leads the American League with a 1.81 home ERA (9 ER in 44.2 IP) this season, going 5-1 with a.227 opponents average...he s allowed two runs or fewer in six of his seven starts at The K, with the only blemish being the first six runs in an 11-7 setback to the Yankees on May 17...dating back to the start Vargas vs. Blue Jays Player AVG AB H HR RBI Darwin Barney.333 3 1 0 1 Jose Bautista.267 15 4 3 4 Ezequiel Carrera.667 3 2 0 1 Josh Donaldson.087 23 2 1 2 Russell Martin.167 6 1 0 0 Kendrys Morales.200 25 5 2 4 Kevin Pillar.000 3 0 0 0 Jarrod Saltalamacchia.000 2 0 0 0 Justin Smoak.000 5 0 0 0 Troy Tulowitzki.000 5 0 0 1 Jason s 2017 Starts DATE OPPONENT SCORE IP H R ER HR BB SO TP-K LEFT 4/7 at Houston W, 5-1 6.0 6 1 1 0 1 6 93-62 2-1 4/13 Oakland W, 3-1 7.2 4 0 0 0 1 8 98-66 3-0 4/19 San Francisco W, 2-0 7.0 4 0 0 0 0 9 92-61 1-0 4/24 at Chicago-AL L, 1-12 5.0 7 4 3 1 0 5 96-60 1-4 5/1 Chicago-AL W, 6-1 6.0 5 1 1 0 3 1 96-59 4-1 5/6 Cleveland ND, 1-3 6.0 4 0 0 0 2 6 92-61 1-0 5/11 at Tampa Bay W, 6-0 7.0 3 0 0 0 1 4 96-63 6-0 5/17 New York-AL L, 7-11 4.0 7 6 6 1 2 4 91-56 0-6 5/22 at New York-AL L, 2-4 6.0 4 3 3 2 3 6 102-63 2-3 5/27 at Cleveland W, 5-2 5.2 9 2 2 1 2 2 94-60 4-2 6/2 Cleveland W, 4-0 9.0 7 0 0 0 1 3 103-69 4-0 6/7 Houston W, 7-5 5.0 6 2 2 1 1 5 89-53 7-2 6/13 at San Francisco W, 8-1 7.0 5 1 1 0 1 6 102-65 8-1 6/18 at LA Angels W, 7-3 6.0 8 3 3 0 2 3 94-62 7-3 2017 Totals 10-3 2.27 87.1 79 23 22 6 20 68 1338-860 64.3% Career Totals 77-73 4.05 1309.0 1321 621 589 156 377 873 - - of 2015, Vargy has lost just once in 13 starts in KC, going 7-1 with a 2.39 ERA (19 ER in 71.2 IP)...he s 44-32 with a 3.51 ERA in 105 starts (114 appearances) at home, including a 13-7 mark in 29 home starts with the Royals. ALL ABOARD THE CAIN TRAIN--Lorenzo Cain broke out of a 2-game 0 fer last night with a double that opened the seventh inning and led to KC s first run...he s hitting.357 (20-for-56) in his last 15 games with 18 runs, two doubles, a triple, seven home runs and 13 RBI...he has walked 30 times on the year, just seven shy of his single-season best of 37 set in 2015 with well over 100 games remaining...he swiped a pair of bases a week ago tonight in Anaheim and is now 14-for-14 in stolen bases and the only Major League player with at least nine stolen bases to still be perfect on the year. BACK TO ERRORLESS BALL--The Royals returned to mistake-free defense last night after just the second 2-error contest of the season on Wednesday...KC continues to lead the Majors in fewest miscues with 26 through the first 72 games, four fewer than runner-up Minnesota (30)...last year s club committed 40 errors through the 72- game mark a season ago. MINI-TRIP AHEAD--Kansas City will pay its first visit to the Motor City in the upcoming week with a 3-game stop that starts Tuesday night...kc was 1-2 against the Tigers when they came to Kauffman Stadium to closeout May...the Royals hold a slim 334-333 advantage in the all-time work against the Bengals, including a 159-174 deficit in Detroit, 72-82 since the club moved to Comerica in 2000...the schedule is somewhat segmented over the next week Detroit the only stop on that trip, before KC returns home for a weekend set against the Twins that includes a split doubleheader on July 1 to make-up the April 29 postponement...then after the July 2 matinee vs. Minnesota, KC is out again for a week in Seattle (3) and Dodger Stadium (3) prior to the break...it will be just the second visit ever to Chavez Ravine, first since 2003. STILL AMONG THE ELITE--Replay specialist and team eagle eye Bill Duplissea was stymied with a stands call on Monday night after New York took 3:05 to review a possible pickoff at first base before coming back with a hung jury...dupe is now 13-for-17 for a 76.4% success rate, which is just a shade below the Yankees, who are 14-for-18 with a 77.8% mark for tops in the Majors...he also requested a Crew Chief review of Danny Espinosa s home run on June 16 that was flipped into a foul ball upon review, but Dupe does not receive statistical credit for a Crew Chief review...bill closed 2016 as the best in baseball at his craft with a 69.2% success rate, making good of 27 of 39 challenges, with the Mets next at 67.7% (21-for-31). EASTERN SUCCESS--With a 3-1 start to this homestand against Boston (2-1) and Toronto (1-0), the Royals are now 11-6 against the A.L. East with a pair to play...kc will return to action within the Central next week with a 3-day stop in Detroit, followed by a 4-game series here against Minnesota that features a day/night twinbill a week from today to make up for an April 29 rainout...the Royals have some work to do intra-divisionally, going just 9-18 within the Central...Kansas City is 11-10 vs. the West and will get three more against that division on July 3-5 with a 3-game stop in Seattle...meanwhile, KC is 5-2 against National League competition this year, with the next test coming in Dodger Stadium on July 7-9 in a 3-game set prior to the All-Star break.
