@ BGATHLETICS #WEAREBG Miami (OH) at BGSU Friday, Sept. 25 @ 7 p.m. SCOUTING MIAMI The RedHawks begin league play with a 4-3-0 record coming off two shutout victories over Rice and Florida Gulf Coast, both defending conference champions. Miami has seen goal production from seven different players, led by Kat Zalar s three. Zalar also leads the team with six points. Defensively, Vic Maniaci has spent the majority of the 2015 season in goal, totaling 36 saves and allowing five goals. Miami was chosen to finish second in the East Division by the MAC coaches. LAST MEETING VERSUS THE REDHAWKS (Sept. 28, 2014) Lauren Cadel posted nine saves in goal for the Falcons, however, Miami was able to get two first half goals to defeat Bowling Green 2-0. To go up 1-0, Miami s Kelsey Dingles played the ball into the box which found the head of Maggie Scott who placed the header past Cadel and into the back of the goal at the 14 minute mark. The RedHawks added a second goal two minutes later as Haley Walter took a pass from Rachel Marble and dribbled from the middle out wide before blasting a shot that just snuck by Cadel at the far post in the 24th minute. BGSU VS. MIAMI ALL-TIME SERIES The RedHawks own a 12-7-2 lead all-time versus the Falcons, defeating BGSU 4-0-2 in their last six meetings. Bowling Green s last win against Miami came at home on Oct. 12, 2008 when the Falcons shutout the RedHawks 4-0. Ball State at BGSU Sunday, Sept. 27 @ 1 p.m. SCOUTING THE CARDINALS The Cardinals are the tied favorite to win the West Division, according to the MAC preseason coaches poll. Ball State enters the game with a 4-2-2 record and come off a 3-1 win against Morehead State. Abigail Boswell and Gabby Veldman pace the Cardinal offense with three goals each and a team-high six points. In goal for Ball State, Alyssa Heintschel has recorded 22 of the team s 23 saves, playing in all eight contests this season. LAST MEETING VERSUS BALL STATE (Sept. 26, 2014) The Falcons dropped their MAC opener last season to Ball State, 5-0 in Muncie, Ind. An own goal by the Falcons and a penalty kick by Ball State in the second half tipped the momentum in favor of the home standing Cardinals. Lauren Cadel was injured early in the first half after a collision in front of the goal, forcing her out of the game. Backup keeper Alexis Smith entered the match for the Falcons for the remainder of play. Kara Ross led the team with three shots. BGSU VS. BALL STATE ALL-TIME SERIES Bowling Green is 3-11-3 all-time versus the Cardinals, including an 0-5-1 record over the last six games between the two teams. The Falcons last defeated Ball State Oct. 10, 2008 in double overtime 1-0 victory. BGSU QUICK FACTS GENERAL INFORMATION School... SEEKING REVENGE BGSU lost to both the RedHawks and Cardinals last season in shutout form on Sept. 26 and 28 to open MAC play. Ironically, the Falcons last wins against both Miami and Ball State came back on the same October weekend in 2008. This time around, the Falcons have a chance for redemption Friday and Sunday against the RedHawks and Cardinals. IN THE MAC The Falcons have the MAC s top offense with 2.12 goals per match. Mikaela Couch paces BGSU with 13 points on five goals and three assists, which are all team-highs. Erica Hubert has netted four goals of her own for the fast-paced Falcons. HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE BGSU ranks second in the Mid-American Conference in home attendance numbers this season, averaging 520 fans per game at Cochrane Stadium. The team set a women s soccer school record of 803 at the season opener against Chicago State. The Falcons did not allow any goals in their first three home games of 2015, propelling them to a 3-0 record at Cochrane Stadium. The team s last match at home resulted in two goals allowed in the loss to Butler, dropping BGSU to 3-1 at home. COACH S COMMENTS We are definitely ready to open up MAC play this weekend. Our spirits, mentality and focus are in a place we haven t seen before which is a sign of their confidence in the process and eagerness to play. Miami and Ball State are two of the top teams in the conference, so I m glad we get to open up with them right off the bat to really see who we are as a team. It s also great timing to have them both at home. I believe we have the pieces in place to start making some noise in the MAC this season. -- Head Coach Lindsay Basalyga. MAKING HISTORY *BG women s soccer had a record-setting crowd of 803 at the season opener against Chicago State. *The win Aug. 21 was the team s first victory in a season opener since 2004. *BGSU opened the season 2-0-0 for the first time since 2000. *It is the first time in school history the Falcons have shut out its first two opponents. *Through three home games, the Falcons recorded 11 goals, which is already more than the five goals the team scored at home a year ago. *The team s 4-2-1 start this season hasn t been done since 1999. *For the first time since 2008, the Falcons have netted a goal in seven straight contests. *The Falcons 17 goals this season is more than the team s 15 goals scored in 2014. CAREER HIGHS FOR COUCH Mikaela Couch has had a breakout season for the Falcons thus far, leading the team in goals (five) and assists (three). This season, she has scored a goal in five of the team s eight matches and has a goal or assist in six of eight. The sophomore has a team-high 13 points. HUBERT S RETURN Redshirt freshman Erica Hubert is seeing action for the first time in her BGSU career due to an injury suffered last season. Through eight games, she has nine points, four goals and one assist. Hubert scored her first career goal in the season opener against Chicago State, also recording her first career assist in the 4-0 victory. On Aug. 23 against IPFW, the Ontario native capitalized on her shot from the top of the box to score her second goal of the season. For her performance in the team s opening two matches, she received her first ever MAC Player of the Week award. CAREER LEADER - LAUREN CADEL Redshirt-junior Lauren Cadel is already BGSU s career leader in games with double digit saves with only two full seasons on the pitch for the Falcons. With her six total games with 10 or more saves last year in 2014, Cadel sits atop of the career record books with 13 career games with double digit saves. She also registered six games with double digit saves in her first year between the pipes for BGSU in 2013. For his 13th career game with double digit saves, Cadel set a school record with 19 saves in Bowling Green s double-overtime draw with Valparaiso. She also tallied nine saves in wins over Findlay and Eastern Illinois as BGSU went 2-0-1 in games that weekend. Cadel was awarded her second MAC Defensive Player of the Week award for her performances against Findlay, EIU and Valpo. @ BGATHLETICS #WEAREBG BGSU enters the 2015 season having played all but one of its opponents prior to this year. The Falcons are 90-124-28 all-time versus their 19 regular season foes in 2015, including having posted double digit wins over Buffalo and Kent State, as well as wins over Akron, Kent State, Ohio and Chicago State in 2014. PICKED FIFTH IN THE EAST IN THE 2015 MAC PRESEASON POLL The Bowling Green State University Falcons were picked to finish fifth in the East Division by the MAC Coaches. The Buffalo Bulls are the favorite to win the East Division regular season title, while the Ball State Cardinals and Western Michigan Broncos are the tied favorite to win the West Division. In the East Division following Buffalo, Miami is predicted to finish second with Kent State (3), Ohio (4), Bowling Green (5) and Akron (6). YOUTH MOVEMENT The 2015 BGSU women s soccer roster boasts a total of 18 sophomores and freshmen out of the 26 player squad. In fact, of the 18 total underclassmen, 11 are either redshirt-freshmen or true freshmen who will be making their intercollegiate debuts this season. YEAR THREE OF THE PROCESS This season will be the third year under head coach Lindsay Basalyga who took over the Falcons program in January 2013. With the task of rebuilding the program which had won a total of only 16 matches in the four years prior to Basalyga s hiring, the Falcons have showed continued improvement towards the process of rebuilding the program over the last two seasons. BGSU has improved its when total over the last two years under Basalyga s leadership and have made huge strides in restoring the program back to when the Falcons made the MAC Women s Soccer Championship Tournament on a consistent basis. ACADEMIC SUCCESS The Falcons were named a 2014-15 College Team Academic Award winner, as announced by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). BGSU posted a cumulative team grade point average of 3.32 and has also earned the honor in 2009, 2011, 2012 and 2013. ON THE AIR WAVES AT BGRSO AND WWW.FALCONRADIO.ORG The Bowling Green Radio Sports Organization (BGRSO) will be broadcasting a total six home women s soccer contests in 2015. You can tune in to the live calls by going online to www. falconradio.org on your computer, ipad or any other electronic device.
