Women with Vision Fallbrook CA Branch volume 32, issue 5, March 2017 P.O. Box 1061, Fallbrook CA 92088-2016 Young women with dreams become women with vision Our Mission: Advancing equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research. The American Association of University Women is the nation s leading voice promoting equity and education for women and girls. News, News: Fresh off the Presses W e have so many exciting things happening over the next 3 months, I m not sure where to start so make sure you read the newsletter to the end. We have the 2017 Garden Tour, a booth at the Avocado Festival, the results of our annual Tech Trek selection process, the White Rainbow Project, movie review night, and lots more. So sit back and enjoy a good read. Then come out and participate in our activities. As Jimmy Doolittle said, leading his flyers into battle over Japan: There s nothing stronger than the heart of a volunteer. 22nd Annual Country Garden Tour Let s start with the 22nd Annual Country Garden Tour, our major fundraiser for the year. The date is Saturday, May 13 (the day before Mother s Day), starting at the Palomares House at 1815 S. Stage Coach Lane. The six gardens will be open from 10 to 4; the Palomares House will be open at 8:30 for AAUW members to set up. Every member should plan to participate in some way; each member is asked to provide a dozen cookies (to the Palomares House); the Board will be providing strawberries. 1

Part of the regular meeting on Saturday, March 11, focused on the Garden Tour. Elizabeth Leader and Kathy Bierbrauer are coordinating the various committees, so if you have a question, please contact one of them. In addition, if someone on one of the committees contacts you to help, give them a cheerful: Yes! Flyers and tickets are being printed this week; each member will be sent four tickets, which you may either purchase for your own use or sell. The price is $20. We are also planning an advertising flyer to hand out when guests come to the Palomares House to start their tour. If you have/know of any local businesses that would be interested in placing an ad, please contact Diane Summers. Flyers will be distributed throughout Fallbrook; if you want some flyers (or extra tickets), please contact Julie Norberg or Jeanie Curtright. An important point of contact between the community and AAUW is the Annual Fallbrook Avocado Festival. The Avocado Festival is scheduled for Sunday, April 23 this year. Our AAUW branch will again have a table that provides literature about the programs. It is also one of the main places where tickets will be sold for the Garden Tour. Carrie Hughes is in charge of the booth; she may be calling you to help by manning the booth. Again, a yes is the right response. THANKS! A special message from our Corresponding Secretary: Please help me do my job by letting me know about any member who needs a card or note. Thank you! Kathy Bierbrauer ckbierbr@gmail.com or 760-728-7297 Kathy passes on this message: Bob Gregg s Memorial will be Saturday, March 25 at 11:00 AM at the Fallbrook Woman s Club. 2

Speech Trek and the AAUW Mentoring Program Esmeralda Gutierrez and her AAUW mentor, Karen Langer Baker, visited the Signature Watercolor Exhibit at Fallbrook Art Center. Esme is interested in art, so Karen, who is an accomplished award-winning artist, explained how the various artists employed their unique painting techniques. Suzetty Castellanos practicing public speaking during one of our coaching sessions. These young women are doing a great job. The last coaching session will be March 21, with the final competition on April 7, in the evening (time to be announced). Our 2016 2017 Board...and a special treat at this month s meeting Linda Mandrayer (right in the picure) is from The White Rainbow Project, a nonprofit organization that empowers widows of India with teaching skills, counseling, and medical services. She brought items made by the women. One of the programs for the widows is the repurposing of saris donated by rich Indian women; at left are Bobbie Miller and Linda, demonstrating one of the scarves made from the saris. 4

And several of the AAUW women attending the meeting purchased the scarves. Linda said that the Indian women would be proud that we liked the scarves they made. Pictured are: Nancy Heins-Glaser, Barbara Gordon, Jeanie Curtright, Lana Smith, Chris Young, Julie Norberg (back), and Diane Summers and getting together for mahjong is always a fun way to pass time with friends. AAUW friends seated around the table are: Patty, Betty Gilby, Marj Freda, Young Milton, Araxy Moosa, Jackie Sichi-Krzmarzick, and Kathy Bierbrauer. Standing are: Carolyn Steele, Jeanie Curtright, Gina Abdelrahman, Bobbie Miller, and Lini Bennett. 5

Tech Trek Is on Track for Another Great Year The process of selecting the young women who will attend Science Camp at UCSD this coming summer has been completed. Through applications, essays, and personal interviews, the Tech Trek Committee has made the final decision on the six girls and two alternates. We ll have all the details in the next newsletter. Thanks to my committee for a job well done. ~Larissa Scors Anderson March 2017 Calendar of Events Date and time Event Host / Location March 17 6:30 ** Movie Review Hidden Figures Hosts: Julie and Paul Norberg, 230 South Stagecoach Lane RSVP: Julie Norberg home:760-728-8700; cell:760-468- 3937 jcnorberg@att.net March 21; 3-4 Speech Trek Karen Langer Baker; Room 23 **Movie Review is dark in April due to the Avocado Festival and the Garden Tour.
