MAVERICK EXPRESS May 2017 MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL TODD CORSETTI April showers will bring May flowers right? Right?!? We certainly hope so! I want to thank the 20 or so parents that attended our inaugural Booster/PTO meeting in April. I was impressed by the talent, energy, and the commitment from these dedicated parents. It confirmed what I already know, that this community is as supportive as any I have seen. Our next meeting is scheduled for 6:30 PM on Wednesday, May 10 th in Conestoga Middle School s library. During this meeting the group will vote on several board positions as well as determine next the steps for creating a non-profit and a 501(c)3. Booster/PTO meetings are always open to our entire community, so we hope to see you there! On May 31 st, all high schools will conduct a 10 th grade Fly-Up day in the morning. Current 9 th graders who will attend MHS next year will be picked up at 9:30 at Aloha, Beaverton, Southridge, and the Options schools. Busses will transport students to the MHS stadium where planning team members will welcome our students and conduct some brief activities on the main field. A short tour of the exterior of the building and the fields will follow. At 11:30, students will load busses from MHS and be bussed back to their current high schools by noon where they will have second lunch. This event is for current 9 th grade students only. No community members are allowed at this time. We are so excited to have our first graduating class step foot on our campus for the first time! If you have questions, you can reach me via email at: todd_corsetti@beaverton.k12.or.us Sue Neeway is my amazing principal s secretary, and she can be reached through the Mountainside Main Line at 503-356-3500 or by email at sue_neeway@beaverton.k12.or.us The best way to obtain information currently is to follow us on Facebook at: https://www.facebook.com/mountainsidehs/ Twitter: @mountainsidehs Go MAVS!!

The survey can be found on the Counseling Page of Mountainside's website. Share your thoughts, and let us know how we can help you start strong as a Maverick!

AVID-Achievement Via Individual Determination Megan Schmidt, megan_schmidt@beaverton.k12.or.us Woohoo! Our AVID team has just completed our middle school AVID interviews. We met some amazing kids and we can't wait to start our Maverick AVID program. Students will be notified by late May if they have been accepted into AVID. Inductions usually occur in the spring and we need to gather a core group of students who want to form and drive the culture of our NAHS chapter. Contact Ms. Ottum at tamara_ottum@beaverton.k12.or.us if you are interested in being part of this adventure. "NAHS is for students who want to strive to attain the highest standard in art scholarship, character, and service, and to bring art education to the attention of the school and community."~ NAEA

BAND Jeremy Zander, Jeremy_zander@beaverton.k12.or.us We have a (very basic, for now) webpage for the band! While the address will probably change this summer, you can find the webpage at https://jzand51.wixsite.com/mountainsidebandorch. On this website, you can find our online calendar as well as links to our Drum Major and Student Council applications. Please make note of the fundraising car wash dates. Booster Organization Setup: Any successful band program depends on the active involvement of the parents of the band students. If your student is going to be in band, please consider getting involved! Even if you can only spare a small amount of time, we appreciate it. There are many opportunities for your specific talents. If you are interested, please email Holly Bishop-Perdue at president@mountainsidebands.org or join us at our next meeting May 11, in the Southridge High School Library. We are having a busy April laying the groundwork for the Mountainside Marching Ensemble and Band Programs. We have completed the incorporation filings, and have submitted our paperwork for a 501c3 non-profit status. Things are moving along! Mountainside Bands Address: Please take note of the mailing address for Mountainside Bands correspondence: Mountainside Bands 6107 SW Murray Blvd #261 Beaverton, OR 97007 Donations needed! We would welcome any donations to get the program started! Feel free to drop us a check to our new address (see above!). LEADERSHIP Erik Reinholt, erik_reinholt@beaverton.k12.or.us Thanks to the nearly 100 students and parents that came to the first Mountainside Leadership planning meeting on April 10th. It was a fantastic two hours filled with high energy and amazing ideas. We separate the meetings into various topics, so if you missed the last meeting, it is still not too late to come to the next one! Our next planning meeting (students AND parents are invited) is Thursday, May 4th from 6:30-8:30 at Southridge High School in the Large Community Room, right by the main office. Again, if you would like to get on the Leadership email list, please email erik_reinholt@beaverton.k12.or.us. Future planning dates are May 4th, May 23rd, June 12 th, 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM, at Southridge High School. Summer meeting dates are TBD.

ATHLETICS Bryan Sorenson, bryan_sorenson@beaverton.k12.or.us We have ordered more fall uniforms - Cross Country, Girls Soccer, and Volleyball! The following images are just a sample as there will be white uniforms as well. The athletic fields are definitely taking shape as they have completed the JV baseball/soccer field near Scholls Ferry Road, and the varsity softball and stadium fields are very close to being finished. Everything looks so green and flat. And even better, they re not flooded. I would like to announce the following coaches to our staff John Mannion (football), Anna Lennartz (dance), Christina Gray (trainer), and Traci Isaack (AD assistant). We still plan to announce more new coaches over the next two weeks!! I am super excited that we are finally getting closer to a complete staff!! Lastly, I know there is a lot of excitement and anxiety out there to get started with our programs. The hiring process has already been a long haul, and we still have a ways to go. I realize that May 30 is the start of the summer training season, but I ll need your patience as our window to get coaches on board may need to be extended so we can get the right people in place. Some of the coaches we are still looking to hire may not be available until late July which may delay a start time for summer conditioning. It is very important to us to hire coaches that we feel fit our school versus settle for a coach that is ready to go, but may not be the right fit. I also know we have plenty of people in the community that are willing to help, but I want to wait for our coaches to make those decisions. We have time to prepare for JV team sports and even the varsity individual sports. Any conditioning you can do on your own during the waiting period would be a great idea. Being a self-motivating athlete is not a bad thing, so take this time as an opportunity to test your inner selfj Once we can get started, one motto we will have is to practice smarter than your opponent. It doesn t necessarily have to be more.

COACHING ANNOUNCEMENTS: FOOTBALL: John Mannion jmannion.mavs@gmail.com John Mannion has been a teacher and varsity football coach for the past 26 years. He was named Oregon 5A Coach of the Year in 2012 and served as head coach of the South Team in the 2014 Les Schwab High School All-Star Game. John and his wife Inga, a teacher and high school counselor for the past 26 years, have four children; Sean, 25, and daughter-in-megan (a Southridge graduate) live in Thousand Oaks, CA; Katie, 22, works as a civil engineer in Walnut Creek, CA; Megan, 18, will be starting Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in the fall; and Brian, 13, will be an eighth grader in the fall. A meeting is scheduled for Monday, May 8, 6:30PM at Conestoga Middle School for parents and players, to share information regarding the upcoming football season. This meeting will provide an opportunity to discuss important details, schedules and information as we get ready to begin summer workouts in preparation for our first football season this fall. Hope to see you all there.
