2005-06 Outlook 2005-06 Outlook Last year the men s tennis team at NC State was the surprise of the Atlantic Coast Conference. Finishing the season with a No. 46 final national ranking and the most team wins in one season in well over a decade, the Wolfpack appeared to have finally turned the corner in becoming a premier program. While last season may stand as a banner year for the team in the annals of history at NC State, head coach Jon Choboy and assistant coach Matt Halfpenny aren t satisfied. There s more to be done here, Choboy said. We are not intimidated and we are not going to accept a backseat to anyone. With that sentiment being shared throughout the entire roster and coaching staff, NC State seems poised to continue skyrocketing up the national rankings during the 2005-06 season. With concrete goals of advancing up the ACC standings and reaching the NCAA tournament, Choboy is confident that his team has what it takes to get things done. Last season, the Pack missed the postseason by one spot. This year, however, a deep pool of experience and talent have the Pack thinking that this is their year. We are extremely deep one through 10, Choboy said. When I got here we could barely field a team, but that certainly isn t the case anymore. Seniors Will Shaw and Val Banada will make their swan song with the team, eager to capitalize on one final year of eligibility, while William Noblitt will look to grow on an immensely successful season a year ago. Noblitt, who led the team in combined singles and doubles wins throughout 2004-05 (46), as well as total ACC decisions (13), appears ready to accept a leadership role during his junior campaign. One name that is sure to be circled on all opponent scouting reports is sophomore Nick Cavaday. Entering the season with a No. 65 preseason ITA ranking, Cavaday collected 35 combined wins in singles and doubles last season, tying Shaw and junior Andre Iriarte for third best on the team. Minor injuries plagued Iriarte in the fall, but he seems poised to be fully recovered for spring action. Last season Iriarte went.500 in ACC singles, as did Cavaday. Alongside Cavaday, three more sophomores add valuable depth and consistency to the roster. David Rozek, Mason Schermerhorn and Ben Zink each gained quality experience last spring and looked even more impressive in fall workouts and tournaments. Schermerhorn finshed last season with the second most combined singles and doubles victories on the team (39). All of our guys have improved because of hard work, as well as having spent one more year in the system, Choboy said. David, Mason and Ben are all going to compete for starting spots. Each of their games has improved ten-fold since the day they arrived on campus. In addition to the eight returning letterwinners, Choboy landed one of the nation s top recruiting classes in picking up Jay Weinacker of Mountain Brook, Ala., and Chris Welte of Moylan, Pa. At the conclusion of their junior careers, both players were ranked No. 1 in the USTA Southern and Middle-States Sections, respectively. Jay and Chris both bring some firepower to the team, Choboy said. They have good size and they are ferocious competitors. We need imposing players and we feel like we hit the jackpot with these two guys. These are loyal guys that can go into war with us and cover our backs. That s exactly the type of player that Choboy and Halfpenny have been looking for. For two coaches who have spent nearly a decade recruiting and teaching the game together, Choboy and Halfpenny appear noticeably excited about their team and the road ahead this season. These days, other teams are paying attention to the Wolfpack too. There s a lot of respect for the Wolfpack out there, Choboy said. This team is at a point where we can beat anyone and other schools know that. That really helps us to find some challenging opponents because teams know that when we play on the court, it s going to be a quality match. People are recognizing the fact that NC State is becoming a topflight national program, Choboy said. We are winning big matches and signing top talent to join in on what we re doing here. Our name is out and things are beginning to happen. If this year s squad eclipses the accomplishments of the team from last year, don t be surprised. With a solid returning cast and two of the nation s premier freshmen on board, the Wolfpack seems destined to continue moving down the championship pathway. Coach Choboy instructs Andre Iriarte. 2

DR. JAMES L. OBLINGER Chancellor Dr. James L. Oblinger, former provost and executive vice chancellor of North Carolina State University, became the 13th chancellor on January 1, 2005. Before being named provost in May 2003, Oblinger served as dean and executive director for agricultural programs of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) at NC State from 1997 to 2003, assuming those duties after serving as associate dean and director of academic programs for CALS from 1986 to 1997. He is also a tenured professor in the Department of Food Science. Prior to coming to NC State, he was associate dean and director of resident instruction in the College of Agriculture at the University of Missouri-Columbia (1984 to 1986), and assistant professor, associate professor and professor of food science and human nutrition at the University of Florida (1972 to 1984). As dean of CALS, Oblinger presided over the administration of 22 departments, more than 400 tenured faculty members, 690 field faculty and agents, 1,900 staffers, more than 4,300 undergraduate and graduate students, and a budget of $180 million. An expert in the microbiology of red meats and poultry, decontamination techniques, and foodborne pathogens, Oblinger is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Association for Higher Education, the Council for Agricultural Science and Technology, and the Institute of Food Technologists, among other organizations. Born in Ashland, Ohio, in 1945, Oblinger received a bachelor s degree in bacteriology at DePauw University in 1967, and both a master s degree and Ph.D. in food technology at Iowa State University in 1970 and 1972, respectively. Oblinger is married to Diana G. Oblinger and has four sons. the year 2005. Administration/Support Staff LEE FOWLER Director of Athletics Since Lee Fowler was named Director of Athletics in September of 2000, a whole new category of athletic equipment has been introduced at NC State. These days, the sight of hammers, shovels, drills, and backhoes is almost as common as balls, bats, rackets and gloves. The face of NC State athletics has changed dramatically during Fowler s brief tenure. With the financial support of the Wolfpack Club, Fowler has spearheaded an unprecedented capital building program to renew and revitalize virtually every major athletics venue and support facility. The athletics facility master plan calls for $100-$120 million in new construction and renovations through Under Fowler s direction, the Carter-Finley Stadium expansion has come to fruition, with the addition of the Superscreen scoreboard, the enclosure of the south end zone and the 103,000-square foot Murphy Football Center. Construction is underway on a new press box at Carter-Finley Stadium that will include luxury suites. Two projects recently completed are the renovations on the Doak Field baseball complex and the Wolfpack tennis facilities. Renovations have begun on the Weisiger-Brown, Reynolds Coliseum and Case Athletic facilities, as well as the construction of a short-game golf facility on campus for the Wolfpack men s and women s golf teams. Plans are also on the drawing boards for a new 18-hole golf course on the Centennial campus and for upgrades to the Derr Track Complex, which will include a softball stadium and upgrading the Pack s soccer facilities. Known as a hands-on director, Fowler has also seen the NC State programs enjoy success in the fields of competition. The football squad has played in four bowl games, while the men s basketball team has earned NCAA Tournament invitations the past three seasons. The baseball and women s basketball squads have made NCAA appearances during his tenure, and the men s and women s cross country squads earned top-10 finishes twice in the past three years. The Wolfpack athletic program was ranked ninth in the nation recently by The Sporting News in a listing that factored athletic and academic success. Fowler came to the Wolfpack program after serving as the Director of Athletics at Middle Tennessee State University from 1994-99. At MTSU, Fowler led the Blue Raiders move from the 1- AA level to Division 1-A and negotiated the school s move from the Ohio Valley Conference to the Sun Belt Conference. His program won that league s All-Sports Trophy for the best all-around sports program each of his last five years. Prior to his appointment at MTSU, Fowler served as Associate Athletic Director and Director of the Tiger Clubs at the University of Memphis from 1986-94. At Memphis, he increased fund-raising totals from $634,000 in 1985 to $3.05 million in 1993, the highest level in school history before or since. Fowler served as an assistant coach for the Memphis men s basketball team from 1979-86, helping the Tigers post an overall record of 154-45 and advance to the Final Four in 1986. From 1975-79, Fowler served as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Vanderbilt University. As a student-athlete, Fowler was a starter and top reserve on the Commodores 1974 Southeastern Conference championship team, the second in Vanderbilt s history. The squad posted an overall record of 59-21 during his playing career, at the time the best three-year record in school history. Fowler earned his bachelor of arts from Vanderbilt in 1974 and earned his master of science from the University of Memphis in 1986. A native of Columbia, Tenn., Fowler is married to the former Carol Murray of St. Clair Shores, Michigan. The couple has three daughters, Ashley (25), Kristin Leigh (18) and Carlee (14). SHANNON YATES Assistant AD for Varsity Sports Administration / Game Operations Shannon Yates, now in her 13th year as a member of the NC State Department of Athletics, was named Assistant Athletics Director for Varsity Sports Administration and Game Operations in May 2000. Yates is responsible for game-day management for each of the Wolfpacks varsity sports, overseeing event service staff, security, parking, credentials, first aid and stadium policies. As the sport administrator for volleyball, gymnastics, softball, men s and women s tennis and cheerleading, she serves as a liaison for the teams with the rest of the department. She assists those coaching staffs with team management, public relations and finance. Yates began her career at NC State as a student trainer in 1988. In 1992, after completing her undergraduate degree in psychology, she joined the department as a marketing intern. Two years later, she became administrative coordinator for finance and operations and worked in the areas of game-day operations, tickets and finance. After serving as director of operations for women s basketball during the 1996-97 school year, Yates returned to her role of managing the Wolfpack s game-day events a year later and remained in that capacity until she was promoted to Assistant Athletics Director in 1998. Yates is a 1992 summa cum laude graduate of NC State with a bachelor of arts degree in psychology. She earned her master of science degree in sports administration at NC State in 1994. Head Coach 4TH SEASON Entering his fourth season at the helm of the Wolfpack, NC State head coach Jon Choboy has positioned his tennis team for success. Using the advantages of the elite 30,000 square foot J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center, coupled with Choboy s drive and determination to succeed, he has the Wolfpack poised to turn the corner and move up in the Atlantic Coast Conference. In his first season with NC State, Choboy inherited only two players and fielded a roster of just six players for the season, winning 30 singles matches as a team. After a year of recruiting, he brought in a strong class of six players, led by 2004 All-ACC standout Conor Taylor. That year, his squad won 46 matches, including 15 ACC matches, compared to six conference wins his first season. In 2005, the Wolfpack continued its ascent up the conference standings, as well as in the national polls, as the team finished the season at No. 46 in the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll. The team s 15 wins served as the most since 1988 for any Wolfpack team, while the 12-0 start to the season marked the second best start and second longest win streak in school history. Choboy came to the Wolfpack after a four-year stint at Brown University, compiling a record of 53-37. He led the Bears to its first ever Ivy League championship, completing a perfect 7-0 regular season and earning an NCAA Tournament berth. For his efforts, Choboy was named the Wilson ITA Region I Head Coach of the Year for the 2002 season and was one of eight finalists for national coach of the year. Brown qualified for the 2002 National Team NCAA Indoor Championships as one of the top 16 teams in the country, a first-ever feat for the school. Since 1998, Brown s regional ranking Head Coach Jon Choboy jumped from 18th in 1998-99 to first in 2001-02. Choboy also helped produce the Ivy League Rookie of the Year in 2000 and 2001, place the only freshman in the country in the singles national tournament and field a team in the 2001 NCAA doubles championship. Prior to his stint at Brown, Choboy served as an assistant coach at Florida for two years. While with the Gators, Choboy helped Florida to a No. 9 and No. 15 national ranking. Choboy also has head coaching experience at Charleston Southern and Springfield College. While at Charleston Southern he coached both the men s and women s teams, and was named Big South Coach of the Year in 1995 and 1996. The men s team at Charleston Southern won their first conference title in school history under his tutelage. At Springfield, Choboy s team won the conference title in 1991, and he has named Northeast Conference Coach of the Year that same season. Success appears to follow Choboy wherever he goes. A look at his past reveals a history of helping turn CHOBOY S CAREER RECORD 156-113 (11 seasons) programs around and developing players. Both Brown and Charleston Southern were last in their respective conferences when Choboy took over, and both won the school s first conference championship within four years. Choboy also worked as an assistant coach at Springfield College and Canisius College, and has served as the head tennis coach at Niagara Catholic High School and St. Joseph s Collegiate Institute. The Youngstown, N.Y., native is a 1989 graduate of Canisius College with a bachelor of science degree in physical education. In 1992, Choboy received his masters degree in physical education - sport psychology. His masters thesis, The Influence of Mental Imagery on the Tennis Service Accuracy of Intermediate Level Tennis Players was published in 1992. At Canisius he was a three-year all-conference selection, and finished with a career record of 75-10 at first and second singles. He competed on the Canadian Satellite Circuit from 1987-88 and in USPTA sanctioned tennis tournaments from 1989-92. Choboy has been a Professional I member of the United States Professional Tennis Association since 1989. Choboy is married to his wife Tammy, and has three children, his daughter Madison, 8, son Landon, 5, and a newborn baby girl, Laney. Tammy, Laney, Jon, Landon and Madison Choboy 4

Matt Halfpenny 4th Season Assistant Coach Assistant Coaches Matt Halfpenny joined the NC State coaching staff in 2002 with head coach Jon Choboy, whom he played for at Charleston Southern University and coached with at Brown University. He has been an instrumental part in developing and recruiting the top talent that NC State has brought into the Wolfpack program. Halfpenny was named Wilson ITA Region I Assistant Coach of the Year while coaching at Brown. Choboy and Halfpenny teamed to lead Brown to the school s first Ivy League championship in 2002. A 1998 graduate of Charleston Southern with a B.A. in Business Administration, Halfpenny competed for four conference championships, winning titles in 1996 and 1998, and finishing second in 1995 and 1997. The 1996 title was the first Big South title for Charleston Southern. As a junior, he teamed with Nicholas Lavalle to reach the quarterfinals of NCAA Region II doubles championship. His team was ranked as high as eighth in Region II in 1996. Halfpenny earned All-Big South Conference honors in 1995, 1996, and 1997, and was co-captain in 1997 and 1998. The 28-year-old Halfpenny worked as an assistant pro at the Sommerville Tennis Club in Sommerville, S.C., from 1994 to 1995. He also worked as an assistant pro at the Brickyard Plantation, Mt Pleasant, S.C., from 1995 to 1997, the Wild Dunes Resort, Isle of Palms, S.C., in 1998, and the Oyster Harbors Club, Osterville, Mass., in 1999. He resides in Raleigh, N.C. and is married to the former Christine Mastro, an assistant lacrosse coach at Duke University. They are expecting their first child in December. Chris Drake joined the men s tennis staff as a volunteer assistant coach following the 2005 spring season. Drake was coached and recruited at Brown University by both Choboy and Halfpenny. Drake won over 100 Volunteer Assistant Coach singles matches, the second best mark all-time for the university. A 2003 graduate of Brown, he will assist the coaches with on the court drills and will use his playing experience and work ethic to influence the Wolfpack team. Drake, from Needham, Mass., is currently playing the professional circuit, most recently defeating the No. 390 player in the world. He trained at NC State for 10 days before embarking on the tour, and he hit with NC State players Conor Taylor, Nick Cavaday and Will Shaw. I was able to train at NC State before I left to play professionally, Drake said. Having coach Choboy and coach Halfpenny and the team to train with and hit with was a big asset to my game, and I look forward to returning and helping them out in return. Drake played in the Portugal Satellite, which was four weeks during Jan. 25 to Feb. 19. In singles he qualified for all four weeks, and in doubles he and Trevor Spracklin won week two and the final week four. His current rankings are 1039 in singles and 693 in doubles in the world.
