In total, Columbus will witness four matches as Ohio State and Saint Francis each face Barton College and the 49ers of LBSU on opposite days. WEEKLY BASICS Friday, Jan. 27 - Columbus, Ohio (St. John Arena) 5 p.m. ET - #4 Long Beach State (6-1) vs. Saint Francis (3-4) Live Stats: GameTracker link available at Video Stream: Facebook Live 7 p.m. ET - #1 Ohio State (7-0) vs. Barton (3-1) Live Stats: GameTracker link available at Video Stream: BTN Plus Saturday, Jan. 28 - Columbus, Ohio (St. John Arena) 5 p.m. ET - Barton vs. Saint Francis Live Stats: GameTracker link available at Video Stream: Facebook Live 7 p.m. ET - #1 Ohio State vs. #4 Long Beach State Live Stats: GameTracker link available at Video Stream: BTN Plus STREAK SNIPPETS Ohio State carries a 30-match winning streak into the weekend The Buckeyes last suffered an NCAA loss on February 6, 2016 Ohio State won 90 of 108 sets (83%) during the victorious stretch The streak also includes 14 straight wins in true road matches Longest winning streak in Ohio State history is 32 matches (24-0 in 1969 and the first eight contests of 1970) Loyola owns 40-match run in 2014-15 while UCLA is believed to own the all-time record of 47 straight (1983-85) The Buckeyes are also riding a 17-set winning streak, sweeping the last five opponents after taking the final two sets vs. No. 2 UCLA on Jan. 7 THE ACE RACE Probability is high that the all-time Ohio State career record for service aces will be broken this weekend at St. John Arena, but by who is unknown. Steve Potter s top mark of 123 aces set from 1992-95 is being closely chased by not one, but two Buckeyes. Miles Johnson (122 aces) is nearest, needing only two more service snipes to become the record holder. However, Nicolas Szerszen is within striking distance as well, entering the weekend with 119 aces to his name. Regardless of which Buckeye is the first to climb atop the OSU Record Books, he will need to keep an eye on his teammate snagging his crown throughout the rest of the 2017 season. The aforementioned dynamic duo does not represent the only Buckeyes chasing all-time career marks. Christy Blough, Gabriel Domecus and Driss Guessous are climbing up the school rankings as well. A comprehensive look at the Career Records Watch can be found on Page 6. AND THEN THERE WERE TWO A pair of men s collegiate volleyball programs remain perfect in 2017 - the Buckeyes at 7-0 and the 3-0 Coker College Cobras. Penn State hosts the Cobras on Saturday (Jan. 28). 1

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING Ohio State is not only 7-0 and the top-ranked team in the land, but is also slotted highly in nearly every statistical category. The Buckeyes are ranked second nationally in kills (13.26/set), aces (2.09/set) and assists (12.52/set); and fourth in the NCAA with a.339 hitting percentage,.174 opponent hitting percentage and 2.61 blocks per set. Individually, four Buckeyes can be found in the Top-5 of at least one NCAA statistical category. Nicolas Szerszen s 5.17 points, 4.13 kills and.70 aces per set are good for second, fifth and fifth best, respectively. Miles Johnson comes in right behind Szerszen for points per set, posting a 5.09 average good for third most in the country. Blake Leeson also sits at No. 3 on the strength of his 1.30 blocks/set. In addition, Christy Blough s 11.13 assists/set have not only aided the Johnson-Szerszen offensive output, but also place him fourth in NCAA. DOMECUS EARNS CONFERENCE RECOGNITION Gabriel Domecus registered a dozen digs in Ohio State s road sweep at Saint Francis (Jan. 20), an effort which earned him MIVA Defensive Player of the Week honors on Jan. 24. Domecus has now picked up MIVA Defensive Player of the Week accolades during three straight seasons (3/15/16; 3/17/15). STANFORD SWEEP Following a west coast swing sweeping past No. 10 Stanford on back-to-back nights, the Buckeyes are one of only two programs in the country to record multiple wins against current AVCA nationally-ranked squads. Ohio State owns four such wins while UCLA has three. Individually, Miles Johnson and Nicolas Szerszen posted landmark numbers while in California as well. Johnson s final kill of the weekend marked the 1,000th of his career, becoming just the 15th Buckeye to ever reach that total. Szerszen, meanwhile, racked up 10 kills in total with a half dozen coming in the second contest. His six-ace sum is tied for the fourth highest amount in school history. SZERSZEN NAMED NATION S BEST OF OPENING WEEK Nicolas Szerszen was tabbed as the National Player of the Week on Jan. 10 by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) after an electric performance in lifting the top-ranked Buckeyes over No. 2 UCLA on Jan. 7. Szerszen also played a role in the Buckeyes downing of USC the night prior. In addition, he was also awarded MIVA Offensive Player of the Week recognition. This marks the second National Player of the Week and ninth MIVA Player of the Week (eight Offensive, one Defensive) laurels of Szerszen s career. BIG TEN TOPS PAC-12 ON STRENGTH OF TWO OSU VICTORIES In the second annual Big Ten/Pac-12 Challenge, which simultaneously served as the 2017 AVCA Showcase, the top-ranked Buckeyes posted a pair of four-set wins over USC and No. 2 UCLA to open the season. The latter contest versus the Bruins was broadcast nationally on the Big Ten Network. Penn State split its weekend against the same two squads, resulting in a 3-1 overall triumph for the Big Ten. PRESEASON PROGNOSTICATION Ohio State began its national title defense slotted as the top-ranked team in the AVCA Preseason Coaches Poll after receiving 23 of 24 first-place votes (the other going to UCLA). Three Buckeyes were chosen as Preseason All-Americans by Off the Block s 26-member voting committee comprised of head coaches and volleyball reporters from around the country. Miles Johnson and Nicolas Szerszen garnered First Team recognition while Christy Blough was selected for the Second Team. MIVA FAVORITES League coaches voted Ohio State as favorites to win the 2017 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association championship. The Buckeyes own the most MIVA titles all-time, capturing their 25th regular season crown and 15th MIVA Tournament championship last season. The MIVA coaching crew also tabbed Nicolas Szerszen as the Preseason Player of the Year; joined by Christy Blough, Gabriel Domecus and Miles Johnson on the Preseason All-MIVA squad. The NCAA Women s Volleyball Championship was held Dec. 15-17, 2016 downtown at Nationwide Arena with the men s trophy being awarded May 4-6, 2017 inside St. John Arena. 2

ALL HE DOES IS WIN, WIN, WIN Assistant coach Kevin Burch has been on the coaching staff of an NCAA national championship program for six consecutive years. The 2016 crown completed a circle for Burch as the championship streak started with the OSU graduate serving as Ohio State s volunteer assistant coach during the 2011 title run. matches. HEAD COACH PETE HANSON Pete Hanson has served as the Ohio State head men s volleyball coach for the last 32 seasons and guided the Buckeyes to a pair of NCAA national titles in the last five years (2011, 2016). He is the eighth head coach in program history. In three-plus decades at Ohio State, the Flint, Mich., native has posted an overall record of 645-333 (.660) and 280-90 (.757) clip in Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA) Hanson has been named the National Coach of the Year four times. Volleyball Magazine tabbed him as such in 1998 and the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) did so in 2000 before both organizations selected him as the Coach of the Year following Ohio State s 2011 NCAA Championship. He picked up the prestigious AVCA honor once again in 2016. Ohio State s 2016 national championship came exactly five years to the date (May 7) after the program s first crown in 2011. Furthering the parallel, both titles were also clinched in the same facility, Penn State s Rec Hall. Hanson corralled his 12th MIVA Coach of the Year recognition in 16 following a 31-3 campaign which ended in not only the NCAA Championship but also a clean sweep of the MIVA regular season (15-1 record) and MIVA Tournament titles. The Buckeye national title in 11 concluded with a five-set victory over UC Santa Barbara. Ohio State went 26-6 and captured the MIVA regular season championship as well that season. Hanson has guided the Buckeyes to 16 MIVA regular season titles overall and made 11 NCAA Tournament appearances. Hanson s squads have racked up 20-or-more wins in 20 of 32 seasons. The Buckeyes have also swept through an undefeated home slate six times under the tutelage of Hanson. Ohio State strung together five consecutive MIVA crowns from 2007-2011. The five-year tear ending in a 2011 national championship came with a combined winning percentage of.743 (107-37). In addition to his collegiate coaching experience, Embaugh was invited to be a coach for the 1997 USA Volleyball 16-and-under boys developmental camp. With Burch roaming the sidelines, Springfield Men s Volleyball was crowned national champions once again in 2014. Legendary volleyball coach Russ Rose then offered Burch an opportunity to join the storied women s program at Penn State University. As the Director of Operations in 2014, Burch contributed to the team s seventh NCAA Championship. Kevin s initial journey to Columbus was inspired by his late grandfather, Darrell Burch, a three-time Ohio State graduate. Darrell earned bachelors, masters and PhD degrees from the University in 51, 53 and 59. Before transitioning into coaching full-time, Burch captained the 2008 Orange Coast College men s volleyball team.
