WELCOME Across all of the work we do in our three buildings and beyond in our communities, we are working hard to develop our range, reach and impact. Through our new artistic vision we will bring the world to Norwich and Norfolk and our exciting dance programme over the next few months demonstrates that. After a phenomenal summer of dance which included Carlos Acosta and his amazing new company Acosta Danza selling-out Theatre Royal, I am delighted to share some of the exciting dance that is coming to us over the next few months. It is fantastic that we are now part of Dance Consortium, a group of 19 large British and Irish theatres committed to bringing the very best contemporary dance from every corner of the globe to excite, challenge, entertain and inspire audiences. This has enabled us to attract the internationally-acclaimed Mark Morris Dance Group from the US to Norwich with their stunning homage to the Beatles album Sgt Pepper s Lonely Hearts Club Band, Pepperland. This joyous work celebrates the album s rock n roll themes mixing creative flair, musicality, wit, humanity and a suitably psychedelic look. We also have the Canadian-based Cirque Éloize who present Cirkopolis, a stunning fusion of contemporary dance and circus, and Ballet Black which celebrates performers of black and Asian descent in a beautiful programme featuring a wonderful range of music and choreography. We are also delighted to sustain and develop our existing dance partnerships with more work from Matthew Bourne s New Adventures, Northern Ballet and Richard Alston Dance Company. Classic acrobatics and tightly choreographed dance numbers are performed against a backdrop of original video projections. In jaw-dropping feats, twelve acrobatic artists challenge the limits of gravity with their physical prowess. No wonder it has sold out more than 4,000 performances in over 550 cities and 50 countries. Classy, popular entertainment.. drama and glorious romantic fun Times Enchanting Guardian It s a knockout Independent Thursday 25 October BALLET BLACK Cassa Pancho s Ballet Black celebrates dancers of black and Asian descent, showcasing technique, precision and grace in specially commissioned pieces. As part of their latest double bill, renowned British choreographer Cathy Marston choreographs a new ballet based on Can Themba s moving fable The Suit. Completing the evening is Arthur Pita s Olivier nominated A Dream Within A Midsummer Night s Dream. The production mixes classical and contemporary to distil the essence of Shakespeare s comedy, unfolding to the eclectic sounds of Eartha Kitt, Barbra Streisand, Yma Sumac and more. Friday 22 Saturday 23 February, 2019 RICHARD ALSTON DANCE COMPANY Richard Alston has been making dance for 50 years and is recognised internationally as one of the most important dance-artists of our time. His Company returns to Norwich with a celebratory triple bill of his trademark, deeply lyrical choreography. The evening centres around exciting World Premieres by Richard Alston and associate choreographer Martin Lawrance. Alston s Brahms Hungarian Dances is set to the hugely popular Brahms pieces, featuring live solo pianist Jason Ridgway, where the dancers are carried along by fast steps and an abandoned fervour. Detour, Lawrance s new work, set to Michael Gordon s pulsing Timber, will be a companion piece to a celebratory revival of the beautiful Proverb, one of Alston s most telling choreographies set to the vocals of Steve Reich. Pepper s Lonely Hearts Club Band with an exuberant new dance work that revels in the eccentric charm and joyful optimism of the Beatles ground-breaking album. The production, a smash hit with audiences at its Liverpool premiere last year, features a score by long-time Morris collaborator Ethan Iverson, who leads a unique live chamber ensemble through quirky arrangements of iconic songs from the record including Lonely Hearts Club Band, With a Little Help From My Friends, A Day in the Life, When I m Sixty-Four, Within You Without You, and Penny Lane mixed with imaginative original compositions.
