WELCOME MESSAGE Dear friends, As President of the European Table Tennis Union it is my pleasure to welcome you to the 34th ETTU Youth TOP 10 event in the Portugal city Vila Real. Recently the Portugal Table Tennis Association provided the organisation of more prestigious activities such as the European Championships in 2014 in Lisbon and the European Youth Championships last year in Guimaraes. Knowing the logistical successes of these events I am sure the implementation of the Youth TOP 10 will happen again with experience and heart. The Youth TOP 10 (former Youth TOP 12) was a prestigious event already from the very beginning. All started in 1985 in San Marino and if we go through the winners names from there we can find many great champions. Olga Nemes (GER), Csilla Batorfi (HUN), Otilia Badescu (ROU), Tamara Boros (CRO), as well as Vladimir Samsonov (BLR), Timo Boll (GER), Michael Maze (DEN), Dmitrij Ovtcharov (GER) and from the younger generation Petrissa Solja (GER), Bernadette Szocs (ROU) and Patrick Franziska (GER) just to mention a few of them played all the same event in cadet or in junior in their respective age. We are most grateful to the Portugal Table Tennis Association and the city of Vila Real to organise this event and I am convinced it will be on a high standard just as the Portugal table tennis recently. OLYMPIC COMITTEE MESSAGE Today it is unequivocal the ascension of table tennis in Europe, due to the top performance of its players regarding the results, and also the major role of its managers internationally as well as in the organization of important competitions, such as Table Tennis European Teams Championship 2014 in Lisbon. The organization of the Europe Youth Top 10 represents an unmistakable sign of credibility and confidence in the work carried out developing table tennis in Portugal, and it is also an important opportunity to demonstrate the quality organizing major sport events, as well as the indispensable collaboration of the municipalities for this purpose, in this specific case the Municipality of Vila Real. The Portuguese Table Tennis Federation and the Vila Real Municipal Council, their collaborators and institutional partners, will do the best they can to continue working for the success of this Olympic sport. The Portuguese Olympic Committee welcomes all athletes, coaches and officials that between 7th and 9th of September will make of the city of Vila Real a privileged location to promote the modality. VILA REAL TOWN HALL It is with great pleasure that Vila Real hosts the European Table Tennis Championship "2018 Europe Youth Top-10". The Vila Real Sports Pavilion will once again be the meeting place for so many athletes of this sport in full expansion. Dozens of athletes will visit our city, know a little better everything we have to offer the world, enjoy our modern sports equipment and, especially, have contact with the fantastic people of Vila Real. This exchange of experiences is all the more important because these athletes are young people, coming from all over Europe. The rapprochement between people and between cultures is fundamental in these troubled times. And to visit Vila Real is to discover, in the words of the great Portuguese writer Miguel Torga, a Wonderful Kingdom. It is to find a cosmopolitan and urban city, surrounded by a fantastic natural frame. A place where the traditional and the modern meet and merge in a balanced way. A city that assumes itself as regional capital, which functions as the economic engine of an entire region. A city where the avant-garde architecture of many modern public facilities lives in harmony with the baroque style of the Palácio de Mateus. Where the gastronomy is rich, delighting the most demanding palates with the Cristas de Galo or the Covilhetes. Where scientific knowledge and research emanating from the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro are combined with the traditional songs and the popular culture. Where life passes a little slower, but the dizzying speed of Car Racing is engraved in the heart and soul of each one of us. A special word for the Vila Real athletes who have excelled in Table Tennis. For their success, they have contributed a lot to the visibility of this sport locally. Here we leave public recognition to these athletes and their families. The Municipality of Vila Real, within what it is its competences, has sought to be a partner of this evolution of Table Tennis and a facilitator of the growth of the modality in our region. This tournament is a good example that the commitment of all is the essential formula for things to happen. We therefore hope that this championship will be crowned with great success and that everyone will have a lot of fun in the "2018 Europe Youth Top-10" Table Tennis. This event brings to Portugal the best 10 European male and female cadet and junior players turning the city of Vila Real into the capital of youth European of table tennis All of the best European players have played in this competition meaning that one year after hosting the European Youth Championships, Portugal will be able to see top table tennis.
