Box 4002 Basle Switzerland www.ihf.info ihf.office@ihf.info Claude Onesta and Jewgeni Trefilow IHF Coaches of the Year An expert jury of the International Handball Federation has decided as follows: Claude Onesta (Men s team) and Jewgeny Trefilow (Women s team) are the IHF Coaches of the Year 2009. Onesta (France) and Trefilow (Russia) led their teams to winning the gold medal at the Men s and Women s World Championships in 2009. When thinking of coaches who have been doing an excellent job over many years, these two coaches must be kept in mind. A portrait of the IHF awardees: Claude Onesta At the end of January 2010, Claude Onesta made history: For the first time in international handball history, one and the same team succeeded in being World Champion, European Champion and Olympic Champion at the same time. The French team coached by Onesta achieved this historic triple success after having become World Champion in Croatia in 2009 and Olympic Champion in Beijing in 2008. Onesta aged 53 has been coaching the French men s team since 2001. His difficult task was to fill Daniel Constantini s shoes who had led the French team to winning the World Championship in 1995 and 2001. Onesta inherited an intact team and additionally integrated young players such as Karabatic or Abalo into the team. His first achievements were two World Championship bronze medals and the first European Championship title in 2006. Since 2008, Onesta and his French team have been winning one title after the other. Prior to his career as a coach (since 1987), Onesta played for the national team and at the same time belonged to the top performers of the club Toulouse Union which was coached by him from 1987 to 2001 and reached for example the Champions League semi-final. Following Wladimir Maximow (Russia), Onesta is the second coach to succeed in winning all three big titles (Olympic Champion, European Champion and World Champion) with the national team.

Page 2 Mediaservice Jewgeni Trefilow Jewgeni Trefilow is a real workaholic. Since 1999, he has not only been coaching the corresponding Russian top club team, but also the national team. In so doing, he s extremely successful: On club level, he claimed seven Russian Championship titles five times with his former club Lada Togliatti, twice with his current club Zwezda Zvenigorod. In addition to the Russian titles, he won all European cups with his teams in 2002 the Cup Winners Cup with Lada, in 2008 the EHF Cup with Zvezda and one year later the Champions League, also with Zvezda. However, Trefilow (54) was even more successful with the national team: In 2001, 2005, 2007 and 2009, he became World Champion. In 2008, Russia took the silver medal at the Olympic Games and the bronze medal at the European Championship (as in 2000). In 2006, his team won the bronze medal at the European Championship. For a short period of time, Trefilow, born in Krasnodar, was assistant coach of the Russian men s team which became World Champion in 1997. Although Trefilow is generally considered to be a very tough guy, his female players adore him because he always supports them whether on or off the field. The fact that his team consisting of a lot more younger players dominated the WCh in China in such a manner is mainly due to the coach whose main principle is: The only thing that counts is the team and not the individual players. Until 1984, Trefilow was active as a player for different clubs, for example Krasnodar where he started his career as a coach of a women s team. He led this club to winning the Russian Championship in 1988 before he transferred to Wolgograd. Afterwards, he transferred again to Togliatti where he became assistant coach while at the same time becoming head coach of the national team. Interview with IHF President Dr Hassan Moustafa On the fringes of the Super Globe in Doha, the IHF decided to hold the II Extraordinary Congress in Marrakech next year. On the fringes of the Super Globe in Doha (Qatar), the International Handball Federation decided to hold the II Extraordinary IHF Congress in Marrakech (Morocco) next year. Originally the Congress should have taken place in Rome at the end of April 2010, but it was cancelled at short notice due to flight restrictions caused by the volcanic eruption in Iceland. IHF President Dr Hassan Moustafa comments on the decision in an extended interview that will be published in the upcoming edition of the World Handball Magazine. You will find important excerpts of this interview on the website of the International Handball Federation (www.ihf.info).
