Volume 4 Issue 5 Message from the Executive Director Jean-Pierre Beaulieu Get out, play golf like they do at La Vallée In May, Golf Québec announced a major partnership with Club de golf de la Vallée du Richelieu. 20 members made a personal donation of $500 each to support our fundraiser From School to the Golf Club. What a great gesture for their community! Through this initiative, members of La Vallée du Richelieu are setting a new trend that could be replicated in other cities and regions. As a matter of fact, this partnership between the club and its city is part of a sports development initiative aiming to incite children of the region to get out more often and be active. For these generous golfers, the city of Ste-Julie and Golf Québec, it is a concrete action contributing to developing healthy life habits amongst children and teenagers. Make a difference For Golf Québec, this partnership is a perfect match. La Vallée du Richelieu has already adopted two schools as part of the Golf in Schools program. Now, their golfers personally want to make sure that new golf participants will be introduced to the game in their region. Monies collected for this fund will be invested locally in various activities sanctioned by Golf Québec. This is a new approach for the Federation to promote and develop the game in a sports environment directly linked to a golf club. The impact of this joined initiative is quite significant for the region and the golf industry. Together, we must facilitate the introduction of children to golf and their transition to the golf club. Men s Triple Crown The best of the best at the Tunis, Kent, and Amateur For many, at Golf Québec, the month of July goes hand in hand with a series of competitions of the highest calibre. As part of the Turkish Airlines Men s Provincial Tour, the Triple Crown gathers the best golfers of the province who are looking forward to capture the most prestigious titles and earn a place on the Québec amateur team. Alexander of Tunis https://quebec.bluegolf.com/bluegolf/quebec16/event/qu ebec1662/contest/1/leaderboard.htm As he was participating in the Dogwood Invitational held in Atlanta up to this Saturday, Hugo Bernard of Club Laval-sur-le-Lac waited until the last minute before entering the 67th edition of the Alexander of Tunis. This was obviously a great decision! Far from stopping there, he came back even stronger in his second round. His two bogeys of the day were easily offset by seven birdies, of which six were registered on the back nine where he played only 29 strokes. Finally, Hugo Bernard captured the victory with a spectacular cumulative score of 68-66 134 (-8). By doing so, he also established a new tournament record. Hugo Bernard, champion of the Alexander of Tunis A member of the 2016 National Team, he gave quite an amazing show to golf amateurs who had gathered at the Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club, in Ontario, for the first leg of the Men s Triple Crown. He started his first round with a bang, playing a 68 on the par-71 course. Five birdies and two bogeys put him in the lead. Francis Berthiaume, champion of the Duke of Kent The competition was quite fierce. Up to the 16th hole of the last round, Dwight Reinhart of Eagle Creek gave a hard time to Francis Berthiaume of Club Laval-sur-le-Lac as they were tied. All the action took place at the end when Reinhart played the par while Berthiaume made a birdie to win the tournament with a cumulative score of 69-67 136 (-8). As a result, a second member of the Club Lavalsur-le-Lac captured the honours of the second leg of the Triple Crown to sport the plaid jacket.

Once again, this year, they were in the limelight as Joey Savoie captured a well-deserved victory at the Men s Provincial Amateur Championship in which he played 67-68- 73-69-277 (-11). Even if he experienced a few difficulties at the beginning of the third round, he was able to catch up and tie for first with Étienne Papineau, a fellow Pinegrove member. He believes that his utmost concentration was instrumental to his success on the Mattice/Anderson course of Club de golf Islesmere. In the fourth and last round, Savoie took a comfortable advance on his rival with, among others, three birdies on the front nine which were considerably enhanced by an eagle made by Papineau on the back nine. On the leaderboard, Francis Berthiaume of Club Laval-sur-le-Lac tied for 2nd. He might have felt quite lonely in the Top-5 dominated by four Pinegrove athletes: Joey Savoie (champion), Vincent Blanchette (T2), Raphaël Lapierre-Messier (4th), and Étienne Papineau (5th). Jocelyne Bourassa Series Exciting competitions in the Jocelyne Bourassa Series presented by NIVO Since 2010, the Jocelyne Bourassa Series presented by NIVO promotes women s participation in the game of golf while honouring two great builders of women s golf in Québec: Jocelyne Bourassa and Debbie Savoy Morel. Provincial Junior Tour Two outstanding competitions for our juniors From July 11 to 20, all heads were turned to follow the best junior golfers of the province. They might be young, but their skills and performances are quite stunning. Provincial Junior Championship Québec has crowned two new golf champions at Club de golf Cowansville. Both 18 years old, Cullen Chung of Royal Montreal and Noémie Paré of Victoriaville took advantage of their last participation in this provincial event to take control of the who competition, despite an extreme heat wave, and capture the most coveted titles of the Junior Tour. For nine days, 3,700 athletes of less than 18 years old competed in seventeen sports disciplines. For almost 45 years, the Québec Games have been the largest multisport gathering in Québec and golf was part of this year s program! With a short 2-day break after the Provincial Junior Championship, girls of 13 to 17 years old and boys of 13 to 16 years old proudly wore and defended the colours of their respective regions at Club de Golf Métropolitain Anjou. Unlike regular competitions, our young athletes had to concentrate on collecting as many points as possible in the Stableford events. This points systems is based on the number of double eagles, eagles, birdies, pars, bogeys, and double bogeys they made.
Day 1 The first day of this major provincial event was a twoball, best ball format and three regions earned their first medals despite the unpredictability of Mother Nature. Audrey and Lory Paradis of Lanaudière, Rémi Chartier and David Piché of Lac-St-Louis as well as Antoine Chevalier and Victor Rodrigue-Sénécal of Rive-Sud won the gold medals in their respective categories: girls, juvenile boys and bantam boys. The Paradis sisters were on fire and grabbed a second gold medal for Lanaudière. In the boys division, Alexis Clément and Shawn Michel of Centre-du- Québec won the bantam tournament while Louis- Alexandre Jobin-Colgan and Raphael Lebrun of La Capitale-Nationale captured the juvenile title. Day 3 Finally, on the final day of the Games, the young players had the opportunity to showcase their individual skills in a stroke play event. Young phenom of Lanaudière, Audrey Paradis, earned her Queen of the Games nickname with a hat trick as she won the juvenile gold medal. In the girls bantam category, Emily Romancew of Lac-St-Louis who won silver medals on the first two days successful reached the top of the podium. Olivier Ménard of Sud-Ouest received the gold medal of the juvenile boys division while Paul- André Blanchet of La Capitale-Nationale was crowned in the bantam category. Regional Junior Development Coaches advices As part of the Regional Junior Development (RJD) program, certified coaches work closely with our young regional athletes to teach them technical skills but also share their passion for the game of golf. Golf Québec had the opportunity to collect their advices to young players who aspire to becoming professional golfers. Jonathan Moreau, Saguenay/Lac St- Jean/Chibougamau Benoit Lemieux, Montréal-South In my opinion, the best advice is to find the right balance between having fun, training hard, and trying to surpass your own capacities. You should avoid burn out at all costs, feeling overwhelmed is never good. Maintain your passion for the game of golf; never stop having fun. We may not have any control over the person who is reaching higher skill levels, but we surely have an impact on factors that will promote their development. Basically, my role is to accompany them on their development path. I could not say with certainty who will become a golf professional or not, but I truly hope that those who worked with me will keep on playing golf all their life. This sport is all about life! I believe that the most important thing is to pursue our love for the game of golf. By setting goals that we try to achieve, we can maintain this passion. Club s profile Juniors are pampered at Club de golf Venise http://www.clubdegolfvenise.ca/ Dedicated coaches, filled with passion, are found at Club de golf Venise. Capitalizing on the fun of playing golf, they conduct numerous clinics, camps, and activities in state of the art facilities and fully contribute to junior golf development. Amongst those certified coaches, Pierre Lallier has long been recognized and respected at Club Venise. In charge of the Sport-études program of the Estrie area, he has acquired a solid reputation for his work with children. A member of his team, Josée Pérusse might be a rookie at Club Venise but she is a seasoned golf teacher with over 35 years of experience. In the Eastern Township where she worked in the past 25 years, Josée is renowned for her teaching style. The golfing community is quite happy to see her return to the Sherbrooke area after her 7-year sojourn at Club de Golf Royal Estrie, in Asbestos. Pierre and I are childhood friends. We started playing golf together when we were 11 years old. We are both very dedicated and we love to teach, confided Josée Pérusse. development is crucial to the future of our sport, Josée Pérusse organized a Junior Golf Camp of three days in June. Altogether, 17 children showed up to discover the game. These junior camps are really dynamic. Coaches are teaching full and partial swings, approach shots, how to get out of a bunker, and putting. The also create playing situations on the course so their young students can understand the rules and ethics of golf. To cap the golf season on a positive note, Mrs. Pérusse will also organize a 3-day activity camp to be held from August 15 to 17. Every day, a new group of eight junior players is expected. They will either get introduced to the game or develop specific skills. I have been conducting this activity for 7 years with junior players. This summer, I was happily surprised to see that 7 girls have joined it! said Josée Pérusse. The game of golf provides life lessons to these juniors. The personal discipline we are teaching them will help them improve their skills while having fun, increase their concentration, and stimulate their self-confidence. This is the secret recipe for any successful human being, explained Mrs. Pérusse. I hope that children who want to learn how to play golf will come and knock at our door. I really want to help them. It s my passion. I also encourage parents to participate because it is so pleasant to play as a family. We are blessed to have so many beautiful courses in Québec, she added. Golf professional, Josée Pérusse, and a group of participants in her junior camps One of the twelve Junior Golf Development Centres (JGDC) of Québec, Club de golf Venise truly cares for junior players. Convinced that their Women are also a priority Club Venise also offered clinics that are specifically designed for women. It enables them to take golf lessons with their friends, in a different environment which is a lot more convivial. As a result, having fun is one of the goals of the day. Josée Pérusse gave a training session on June 30. A total of 18 women residing in the area benefited from this special activity. Jocelyne Bourassa and Pierre Lallier teamed up to teach putting and
chipping while Mrs. Pérusse covered a variety of driving styles. Even if we need to work harder nowadays to appeal women at the golf course, this was such a success! mentioned Josée Pérusse. Actually, golf is more accessible than ever and women are retiring younger than they used to. Naturally, they could start playing golf more than they did in the past. We must also make sure that we take care of women as a specific segment of the clientele if we want to ensure the future of women s golf. Women may not be able to hit the ball as far as men.
