In 2007, the Bobcats finished 9-1 in MAC play and defeated Miami 3-2 in overtime in Oxford to claim the tournament crown. Ohio returns eight starters and 11 letterwinners from that championship team and is led by senior goalie Jessie Martin (Louisville, Ky.), who was named 2007 MAC Player of the Year and averaged 1.19 goals against last year, ranking her seventh nationally. Two-time All-MAC performer Rachelle Coetzee (Bloemfontein, South Africa) is the returning scoring leader with 11 goals a year ago, while senior Nikki Gnozzio (Flanders, N.J.) is the returning assist leader with seven last season. Also returning is two-time All-MAC honoree Estienne Coetzee (Bloemfontein, South Africa) and junior Marcy Dull (Ephrata, Pa.), who each contributed 10 goals in 2007. About the Opponents Georgetown returns five starters and seven letterwinners from a 2007 squad that went 2-15. The Hoyas are led by senior Maggie Farrand, who had four goals and three assists last season, and also return senior Deirdre Crovo, who played 14 games in goal in 2007. The Bobcats and Hoyas have never met. James Madison returns 10 starters and 16 letterwinners from a 2007 team that went 19-4 and made the final eight of the NCAA Tournament. The Dukes are ranked No. 7 in the STX/NFHCA Preseason Coaches Poll. Leading James Madison into 2008 will be junior Meghan Bain, who notched 11 goals last year, and sophomore Dolores de Rooij, who added nine. First-Team All- American Kelsey Cutchins also returns for JMU in goal. The Dukes are 3-0 all-time against the Bobcats. Notes Afraid of No One: The Bobcats schedule is shaping up to be quite a difficult task, as Ohio faces five teams that qualified for the 2007 NCAA Tournament, including Final Four participant Wake Forest, which is ranked third in 2008. Six of the Bobcats 10 nonconference opponents are ranked in the top 17 of the 2008 STX/ NFHCA Coaches Preseason Poll. Three schools from both the ACC and Big Ten, considered the two best conferences nationally, stand on the slate. Highlighting Ohio s schedule is an in-state battle with rival Ohio State, as well as rematches with No. 12 Duke and No. 10 Michigan State. The Bobcats beat then-no. 4 Duke 2-1 a season ago and fell to the Spartans 3-2 in overtime. No. 7 James Madison, No. 11 Virginia and No. 17 Louisville are also ranked in the preseason poll, while Indiana, Ohio State and Kent State received votes in the poll, and are all on Ohio s schedule. Home Sweet Home: The Bobcats enter the 2008 season riding an eight-game home winning streak dating back to Nov. 3, 2006. Ohio went 6-0 at home in 2007 and will host eight games this season.

The Cats are 7-11 in home openers since 1990, winning last years over Robert Morris University. New Kids on the Block: The Bobcats welcome six new faces to the program in 2008, with a new coach and five new players. Gracie Sorbello joins Ohio s staff after a great career at Duke, where she was a four-year starter and a two-time All-American. The quartet of freshman playing in their first collegiate season includes goalie Jen McGill (Louisville, Ky.), Brooke Edwards (Milford, Pa.), Jenna Green (Wescosville, Pa.) and Laine Greenawalt (Pottstown, Pa.). The final new addition will be sophomore goalie Courtney Seiders (Mt. Joy, Pa.), who transferred from Old Dominion and will sit out the 2008 season per NCAA transfer rules. The Votes are In: Ohio is ranked No. 20 in the STX/NFHCA Coaches Preseason Poll. The Bobcats finished 2007 No. 15 in the poll. Switching Sides: Two Bobcats have traded their sticks for the sidelines, as Torrie Albini and Katherine Claeys, who finished their playing careers at Ohio last year, will serve as undergraduate assistant coaches in 2008, while finishing up their degrees. Claeys, a former goalie, will work with the keepers and both will assist with practices and games. Albini, a three-time All-MAC selection, ranks in the top five in all of Ohio s career and season offensive statistical categories. Welcome to the Big Show: After narrowly missing out on the 2006 NCAA Tournament by dropping the play-in game to Cal-Berkeley, Ohio defeated American 3-2 in double overtime in their 2007 play-in game to qualify for the NCAA Tournament. In the first round, Ohio lost a heartbreaker to then- No. 6 Michigan 1-0 in overtime in Ann Arbor, Mich. All-MAC, All the Time: Ohio placed five players on the All-MAC squads last season, with four returning in 2008, including MAC Player of the Year Jessie Martin (Louisville, Ky.). Seniors Rachelle Coetzee (Bloemfontein, South Africa) and Nikki Gnozzio (Flanders, N.J.) both earned first-team honors, while senior Estienne Coetzee (Bloemfontein, South Africa) and new undergraduate assistant Torrie Albini garnered second-team accolades. A for Effort: Ohio placed 11 players on the NFHCA National Academic Squad in 2007, which is the most in any season for the Bobcats, besting the nine placed on the squad in 2002. Ten of the 11 return in 2008. A Year to Remember: In addition to Ohio s run to the NCAA Tournament, the Bobcats 18 wins in 2007 was second in program history, falling just shy of the 20 wins gathered by the 1982 team. The 2007 squad also scored 64 goals, third-most for goals in a season and averaged 2.6 goals per game, tying for third in school history. Pennsyl-Mania: With four of Ohio s five newcomers hailing from the state of Pennsylvania, the Bobcats roster now has nine players from the Keystone State, which is nearly half the team (9 of 20). Kentucky and Maryland tie for second-most with two each, while Ohio has only one native on the team. Coaching the Best: Prior to Ohio, head coach Neil Macmillan was an assistant at Wake Forest University where he coached two members of the U.S. Olympic field hockey team. Lauren Crandall, whose father is an Ohio alum, and Kelly Doton both played under Macmillan while with the Demon Deacons. The duo started for the national squad during the Olympics and played a big part in helping the U.S. qualify for the Olympics for the first time since 1996. Crandall played under Macmillan in 2003 and 2004, while Doton spent her whole career with the Ohio coach from 2000-2003.
