This means that a sample from each production length is tested to destruction and must either equal or exceed the published minimum breaking load. Suspension, compensating and governor ropes. Dual tensile and single tensile. ELstar6 6x19 Class with fibre core 4 ELstar8F 8x19 Class with fibre core 5 ELstar8S 8x19 Class with steel core 6 Brunton Shaw UK ensure correct and consistent diameter during manufacture by applying the rigorous Sizerite regime of diameter measurement throughout the production process. ELstar8M 8x19 Class with mixed core 7 (steel+fibre) Luberite ensures that during manufacture Brunton Shaw UK ropes are fully impregnated with a controlled amount of high performance lubricant designed to minimize corrosion and maximize rope life. The quality of lubricant for traction drive ropes is carefully controlled to prevent slip. Brunton Shaw UK routinely conduct endurance fatigue testing on samples of rope to ensure optimal and consistent performance.

performance ropes for elevators TECHNICAL INFORMATION Performance, Installation, Maintenance and Discard BSUK Elevator ropes are manufactured in accordance with BS EN ISO 12385:Part 5 Stranded ropes for lifts and ISO 4344 Steel wire rope for lifts, they are suitable for suspension duty on traction drive and roped hydraulic lifts and also for compensating and governor duties. QUALITY ASSURANCE BSUK is registered to the International quality standard ISO 9001 and is an Approved Supplier to a leading Elevator manufacturer. BSUK apply strict standards of control to all elements of production from material selection to final testing. Elevator rope diameter tolerances need to be less than other types of ropes in order to ensure correct contact between the rope and groove. Throughout the entire production process BSUK ropes are closely monitored to ensure the tolerances are met and the diameter is consistent. Routine and regular testing of rope samples from manufacturing runs for fatigue endurance, elongation characteristics and diameter stability is carried out on a dedicated fatigue test facility to ensure consistent rope performance. performance ropes for elevators TECHNICAL INFORMATION Drums, Sheaves and Pulleys These should be cast iron or steel and have smoothly finished machined grooves with rounded edges. Regular inspection of grooves and pulleys and examination of ropes for correct relative contact and wear is of the utmost importance, especially in the face of ever-increasing shaft speeds. Minimum Drum/Pulley Diameters The ratio between the pitch diameter of sheaves, pulleys or drums and the nominal diameter of the rope, irrespective of the number of strands, shall be as follows:- For At Least Suspension ropes 40 Compensation and Governor Ropes 30 Care and Maintenance of Elevator Ropes Before ropes are installed the sheave grooves should be checked for wear. Worn grooves cause rope damage. This precaution is especially important when worn ropes are being replaced as the grooves may have become worn by the old ropes to a size which is too small to adequately accommodate the new rope. All the ropes on an installation should be equally tensioned, BSUK recommends tensioning between ropes of ± 10%. Unequal tensions result in unequal wear, slipping and premature rope failure. In a new installation, all foreign matter, stone, dust, cement etc should be removed before the ropes are installed. Lubrication is critical in achieving optimum rope performance, it reduces friction between component parts of the rope, slows the onset of fatigue and helps prevent rouging, however, too little and rope life can be reduced, too much and slip may develop. All BSUK lift ropes are lubricated during manufacture to ensure they contain the correct type and quantity of lubricant for the application. The quantity of lubricant for traction drive ropes is carefully controlled to prevent slip. Depending on the conditions under which the rope is operating however the lubricant applied during manufacture may not last the life of the rope. Periodic lubrication may therefore be necessary however care should be taken to ensure that the coefficient of friction is not reduced below the value at which slip will occur. Excessive amounts of lubricant should be avoided. Before re-lubricating the rope should be cleaned to remove any debris and contaminated lubricant. After re-lubricating BSUK recommends that rope tensions are checked and adjusted where necessary. Discard Criteria for Lift Ropes This table indicates the maximum number of visible broken wires in the worst section of rope that can be allowed, taken over one complete lay length or approximately 6 rope diameters. Condition Broken wires randomly distributed around the strands Replace or examine within a specified period as stated by a competent person Discard immediately Class 6x19 Class 8x19 Class 6x19 Class 8x19 >12 >15 >24 >30 Broken wires predominate in 1 or 2 strands >6 >8 >8 >10 Adjacent broken wires in one strand 4 4 >4 >4 Valley breaks 1 1 >1 >1 Discard should not only be determined by wire breaks, other factors such as irregular wear patterns, excessive stretch, reduction in diameter, localised damage corrosion etc. must be taken into account by the competent person when making a thorough examination. Note that a rope with a diameter reduction of 6% or more of the nominal diameter should be replaced immediately. For further information refer to ISO 4344, BS EN 12385 or contact our Field Services Department. 7
