UK WILL #COMPETEFORKYLIE IN 2015 This season, the UK gymnastics team has dedicated each meet to Kylie Rowand, who had stage 4 high-risk neuroblastoma. While Kylie, who was almost three, passed away on Feb. 7, UK will continue to dedicate each meet to her memory and raising awareness for childhood cancer. Her mom was a gymnast for Tim Garrison when he coached in California. This season, the Wildcats will #CompeteForKylie in each meet, and have encouraged their opponents to join the fight as well. More information can be found on Facebook at Facebook.com/PrayersForKylie1. 2015 SCHEDULE NOTHING TO LAUGH AT With eight top-25 teams on Kentucky s 2015 slate, including each of the top four ranked in the preseason coaches poll, the Wildcats face one of the most grueling schedules in the nation. Among top-25 teams, CollegeGymFans. com has tabbed UK s schedule as the secondtoughest in the country, while RoadtoNationals. com ranks the Blue and White s schedule as the third-best strength of schedule among all NCAA teams. Seven of the SEC s eight teams enter the season ranked nationally, with the eighth, Missouri, receiving votes. RANKED IN THE PRESEASON, AGAIN Kentucky will begin the 2015 season ranked in the top 25 for the fifth consecutive season, as UK earned a No. 22 ranking in the GymInfo Preseason Coaches Poll. With the secondhighest preseason ranking in program history, the Wildcats have been ranked to start the season in each of head coach Tim Garrison s four seasons in Lexington. UK is one of seven Southeastern Conference teams ranked in the preseason top 25, headlined by top-ranked Florida, the defending co-national champions. LSU is third while Alabama is fourth and Georgia seventh to round out the league s place in the top 10. RETURNING, AND INCOMING, STARPOWER UK returns nine letterwinners from the recordsetting 2014 team and lost four. Among the returners are seniors Kayla Hartley, Shelby Hilton, Shannon Mitchell and Sara Shipley. Hartley and Mitchell were both All-SEC Team honorees in 2014. The Wildcats welcome five newcomers, freshmen Katie Carlisle, Brittany Furuyama, Cori Rechenmacher and Sydney Waltz to the team in 2015 along with junior Khadijah Hudson, a Hebron, Ky., native and transfer from Eastern Michigan. THREE EARN ALL-SEC HONORS IN 2014 Audrey Harrison, Kayla Hartley and Shannon Mitchell were named to the All-SEC Team last season. Harrison earned All-SEC honors for the first time in her career thanks to a 39.125 all-around score at the SEC Championships, the second-highest in the first session. Hartley was named All-SEC for the second time in her career after a 9.850 on uneven bars and Mitchell earned her first career award thanks to a 9.875 on vault along with a 9.850 on balance beam. RECORD SCORES AT HOME IN 2014 Kentucky had unparalleled success at home in 2014. The friendly confines of Memorial Coliseum yielded a 6-1 record for the home team, the best mark since 1991 when UK also went 6-1. The mark includes a win over then- No. 15 Penn State to open the season, along with victories over No. 11 Auburn and No. 22 California, all upsets. With the wins have come record-breaking scores. In Feb. 28 s win over AU, Kentucky s 49.650 on floor was a new school record by 0.200 points, while its 196.275 team score is the fifth-best in program history and the second best at home. A week later, a 196.150 went down as the third-best at home in team history. THE SEC RECORD CROWDS AT HOME IN 2014 In UK s four home meets in 2014, the Wildcats averaged 3,265 fans in Memorial Coliseum. The average, ranked eighth nationally, marked the best home attendance for UK since at least the 1998 season, when records became available. Since 1998, the Wildcats have never averaged more than 3,000 fans. MEET REVIEW FIVE: SEASON-HIGH SCORES FALL IN WIN AT MIZZOU Kentucky used season-high floor and balance beam scores to erase an early deficit and record a season-best score in a 195.825-195.150 win at Missouri on Feb. 6. Three Wildcats won event titles and UK posted meethigh team scores on three events. Kentucky trailed 97.850-97.675 after two events, but outscored Mizzou 98.150-97.300 in the final two rotations to secure the road victory. Junior Montana Whittle and senior Shannon Mitchell each recorded a 9.875 to win beam, while sophomore Taylor Puryear tied for a win on floor with a 9.850. MEET REVIEW FOUR: VS. ALABAMA Led by its seniors, Kentucky overcame a slow start to record a then-season-high score of 195.625 in a 196.700-195.625 loss to No. 6 Alabama on Jan. 31. The Wildcats broke the program record for team score in January, set two weeks earlier on Excite Night. Before this season, UK had never scored above a 195.500 in January, which it did twice in its first four meets of 2015. UK eclipsed 49.000 on two events, bars and floor, for the first time in one meet this year as six career-high or season-high scores were set. UK opened with a 48.600 on vault, but followed with a meet-high 49.000 on uneven bars. A 48.925 on balance beam was a season-best for the Wildcats, as was their 49.100 on floor exercise. Seniors Shelby Hilton and Shannon Mitchell both notched two team-high or team-high-tying scores, with Hilton s being her first team-best totals of the year. Hilton led UK on vault with a 9.800, while Mitchell s 9.875 on beam was just 0.025 shy of meet-high totals. Junior Marissa Beucler s 9.850 on bars was a team high, and Hilton, Mitchell, junior Tiara Phipps and sophomore Taylor Puryear each scored a 9.825 on floor. The meet was the annual DanceBlue Meet, in support of UK s Pediatric Oncology Clinic and the on-campus organization DanceBlue. The Wildcats wore special gold warm-ups, which will be auctioned off on UKathletics.com to support DanceBlue. More on the DanceBlue Meet is available at http://bit.ly/ukgymdancebluemeet. MEET REVIEW THREE: UK FALLS AT NO. 10 GEORGIA Kentucky fell on the road to No. 10 Georgia, 196.975-194.225 on Jan. 24 in Stegeman Coliseum. The Wildcats recorded four season-high or careerhigh-tying scores against the Bulldogs, who scored a season-high team score in front of a sellout crowd of 9.957. Junior Marissa Beucler and freshman Cori Rechenmacher each led or tied for the team lead on two events. Freshman Brittany Furuyama, sophomore Taylor Puryear and senior Kayla Hartley also tallied team-high-tying scores. Beucler, who had not competed in UK s first two meets this season, was a late addition to the lineup after an injury during warmups. Beucler finished first or second on all three events she competed in. UK began the meet on bars with a 48.900, the second-highest total on the event this season. The Wildcats added a 48.775 on vault before a 48.825 on floor, tied for the second-best score this year. On beam, Kentucky closed the meet with a 47.725. Georgia recorded at least a 49.100 on all four events. MEET REVIEW TWO: UK SECOND ON EXCITE NIGHT IN HOME OPENER Competing for the second time in five days to open the season, UK recorded a season-high score by over 0.600 points with a 195.600 on Jan. 16 in Memorial Coliseum. In its home opener, UK improved to 7-2 on Excite Night in head coach Tim Garrison s four seasons. The 195.600 marks the first time in program history UK has recorded a score higher than 195.500 in the month of January. Senior Shannon Mitchell and freshman Sydney Waltz each recorded two team-best scores and each tied for the meet high on one event. Mitchell was one of two gymnasts to score a 9.900 on balance beam, while Waltz posted a career-high 9.850 on vault for a meet-high-tying score. Waltz also led UK on uneven bars with a career-best 9.875, while Mitchell was one of three Wildcats to post a 9.775 on floor. It was a close battle between UK and the second-ranked Tigers. LSU held a 0.125-point lead after one event, but a meet-best 49.150 on uneven bars gave the Wildcats a 98.100-98.050 lead at the halfway point. Tied for the ninth-highest bars total in program history, it was one of three events where UK gymnasts recorded four season- or career-best totals. LSU regained its lead on the third event, after a 49.300 on floor and Kentucky scored a season-high 48.825 on balance beam. UK closed with a 48.675 on floor and LSU ended the night with a 49.250 on vault. The Wildcats opened the competition with a 2015-best 48.950 on vault. MEET REVIEW ONE: WILDCATS OPEN SEASON WITH WIN AT WASHINGTON Kentucky opened the 2015 season with a 194.975-194.325 win at No. 24 Washington Monday night The Wildcats improved to 2-0 all-time against the Huskies in their first-ever visit to Seattle. The 194.975 team score moves UK up to 13th in the national rankings after the first week of the season. UK used a strong team performance on all events and responded to adversity to record the season-opening win. Senior Kayla Hartley led Kentucky with team-high scores on two events. The Wildcats counted a fall on their first event, uneven bars, and trailed 48.700-48.500 after the first rotation, but they quickly responded on vault, the second event. UK s 48.900 on vault chipped away at Washington s already-slim lead. Kentucky trailed by 0.050 points at the halfway point, but a 48.825 on floor gave the Wildcats a lead that wouldn t go away. On balance beam, the final event, UK sealed the victory with a 48.750. Kentucky had one fall on beam, but like the two falls and an early deficit to open the competition on bars, the Wildcats responded with two strong routines by sophomore Taylor Puryear and Hartley to close the meet. Hartley led UK on bars and floor, both with a 9.825. Junior Khadijah Hudson and freshman Sydney Waltz posted team-best scores of 9.825 on vault, while freshman Cori Rechenmacher earned a 9.825 on balance beam to lead the Wildcats.
