Organizational Restructuring Reader Services and Collections Department Last October, we merged the Public Services Department and the Reference and Special Collections Department to offer better services to our patrons. Digital Information Department We also newly established the Digital Information Department in step with the increasingly vital role information system plays in the operation of the library; it will play a pivotal role in our efforts to construct an advanced digital library and to develop the "national knowledge infrastructure" which will include the Digital Archive of the Great East Japan Earthquake. 2 2

The NDL updates its services in January 2012 The system we have been using to manage library operation and search is nearly a decade old, and its concept itself has become obsolete. Thus, from the beginning of this year, it was completely replaced. You can search in-process records that are included in the NDL-OPAC a few days after arrival at the NDL. Operation hours NDL-OPAC are down for scheduled maintenance at this time: 6:30-7:00 on the third Sundays (Japan time) 7

The NDL updates its services in January 2012 On January 6, the NDL started providing about 1,100 titles of newlyadded digitized periodicals (about 265,000 volumes) within the NDL. In all, digitized contents provided inside the NDL are over 1.6 million items in total, including about 290,000 items available on the Internet. Titles and table of contents of the newly-added materials became also available in the digital archives of the NDL (Japanese) through the Internet. The outcome of the mass digitization is shown in the following chart. You can retrieve and browse these digitized materials with permission through the NDL s database on the Internet. 11 11

Building a Digital Archive of the Great East Japan Earthquake Now we can see vast amounts of records about the Great East Japan Earthquake in newspapers, magazines, on TV and the Internet. However those records will be lost, unless someone collects and preserves them. It will be necessary to build a digital archive of the Great East Japan Earthquake. The NDL tries to establish a portal to cross-search and retrieve records of the Great East Japan Earthquake in cooperation with Japanese government ministries. Building a Digital Archive of the Great East Japan Earthquake The NDL can harvest and archive a wide array of government websites, including the websites of local governments affected by the disaster in Eastern Japan without permission under the current NDL Law. The NDL preserves records and cultural heritage of the experience of the Great East Japan Earthquake to pass on to future generations. The NDL is also collaborates with Internet Archive, a non-profit organization on digital library, and the Edwin O. Reischauer Institute at Harvard University. We already have a basic collection concerning the Great East Japan Earthquake. 15 15
