2004 SEASON A NOTES GENERAL PREVIEW COACHES/STAFF PLAYERS REVIEW OPPONENTS NCAA HISTORY Overall Record: 40-19 Pacific-10 Record: 10-10 (fifth) NCAA Regional: 4-0 College World Series: 0-2 (tied-seventh) A RETURN TO THE SERIES: The Washington softball team adavanced to its second-straight Women s College World Series in 2004 and its seventh overall. The Huskies were the No. 8 seed after winning the No. 8 Regional Tournament in Athens, Ga. CONSECUTIVE NCAA APPEARANCES: Washington s 11 consecutive regional appearances ties with Oklahoma for the fourth longest active string in NCAA softball. 2004 REGIONAL RECAP: Washington entered the 2004 Regional Tournament in Athens, Ga., as the No. 1 seed and swept the field, 4-0, to earn its seventh bid to the Women s College World Series. The Huskies defeated Chattanooga (4-1), Michigan State (12-8), Georgia Tech (2-0) and Georgia (3-1) to clinch the WCWS berth. Freshman Dominique Lastrapes was named tournament MVP and Aimee Minor and Ashley Boek were named to the all-tournament team. TWO EARN ALL-AMERICA HONORS: Kristen Rivera and Dominique Lastrapes were named to the All-America teams. Rivera earned first team honors as a catcher after leading the Husky offense in nearly every category, including average (.385), home runs (17) and slugging percentage (.825). The All-America award marked the third for Rivera who was a second team pick in 2002 and a first team selection in 2003. Lastrapes was named to the third team as an at-large selection as she led the team with 75 hits and 41 runs scored, while ranking second with a.371 average and 10 doubles. LASTRAPES SPARKS UW OFFENSE: Freshman leadoff hitter Dominique Lastrapes opened the regional tournament with 10 consecutive hits in 10 at-bats. She finished the tournament hitting 12-for-15 (.800) with four RBIs and six runs scored to earn Regional MVP honors. Lastrapes went 4-for-4 vs. Chattanooga, 5-for-5 vs. Michigan State, 2-for-3 vs. Georgia Tech and 1-for-3 vs. Georgia. BOEK BREAKS SINGLE-SEASON PITCHING RECORDS: Junior pitcher Ashley Boek made an assault on the Husky singleseason record books. Boek broke school records for starts (43) and complete games (34). She also ranks second on the UW season list in innings pitched (279.1) and strikeouts (283) and third in wins (29) and shutouts (11). UNDEFEATED IN REGIONALS: Washington finished the No. 8 Regional Tournament in Athens. Ga., with an unblemished 4-0 record. It marked the seventh time in Washington s 11 postseason appearances that the Huskies have cruised through regionals unscathed. UW also swept its regional opponents in 1996 (3-0), 1997 (3-0), 1998 (3-0), 1999 (4-0), 2000 (4-0) and 2003 (4-0). ROAD TESTED: Washington spent 12 of the season s 16 weeks on the road. The Huskies logged 15,946 air miles, visiting five states (Arizona, California, Georgia, Oklahoma and Oregon), not including miles shuttled between airports, restaurants and hotels. In that time, UW posted a 33-13 (.717) record, proving that life on the road isn t necessarily a disadvantage. RIVERA NAMED PAC-10 PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Washington catcher Kristen Rivera was named Pac-10 Player of the Year and became the first Husky to ever receive conference player of the year honors. Rivera was also named to the All-Pacific-10 first team as she helped lead Washington to its 11th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance.
