THE ATHLETICS STADIUM TO OPEN IN OCTOBER This will be one of the main venues of the Mediterranean Games. The sports complex will also be opened in October The Athletics Stadium and the sports complex at Campclar will be open to season-ticket holders, clubs and the general public on 2 October. The renovation work for the XVIII Tarragona 2018 Mediterranean Games started on 23 August 2016. One year on, the facilities are now complete and ready to be used by the general public, and next year they will be one of the main sporting venues for the 2018 Games. Work on the athletics stadium involved a complete overhaul which included the track, the stands and the auxiliary services. Specifically, the changing room and storeroom building was remodelled, the stadium lighting was upgraded, and a covered training track of 80 metres was installed below the main stand. The stadium capacity will be 1,250 seats (extendable with temporary stands to seat up to 4,000 people during the Games and other major sporting events). Work on the stadium was financed by the Higher Council of Sport and Tarragona Provincial Council. With regard to work on the sports complex at Campclar, this consisted of the complete renovation of the changing rooms of the swimming pool and the service area of the sports pavilion. Improvements include better accessibility, airconditioning and energy efficiency. This renovation was funded by Tarragona Provincial Council. The two facilities are planned to open to the general public on Monday 2 October, from which point local athletes are free to use them, coinciding with the beginning of the season. During the Games, the athletics stadium will host the athletic events
while the Campclar complex will house the future aquatic centre where the swimming and water polo competitions will be held. The councillor appointed to the Mediterranean Games, Javier Villamayor, highlighted the fact that the remodelling of the sports complex and the athletics stadium at Campclar is one of the most palpable demonstrations of the importance of the legacy of the Mediterranean Games.
